Doc reviews both the mosquito trap and bug zapper. You can see both here: www.howtowithdoc.com/best-mos... There Doc shows you the two units he likes. Bug zappers and mosquito traps are both effective and Doc is using both to catch bugs.
Used to use a modified bug zapper over a outdoor pond. Took the bottom off, hung it over the pond with a timer connected to the power. Zapped bugs and fed the fish at the same time.
Last year I purchased one of those black flag large electric bug zapper‘s. The unit worked great and after one night the unit was covered with flying insects. I used to tap my unit with my hand to knock the bugs loose; but I noticed that not all of the insects dropped off the Electric mesh or wiring system. So, I used my battery operated leaf blower and that did the job very well.
I have a very similar Black Flag brand bug zapper, and I have found using a can of compressed air I can blow the bugs off of those grates in a couple seconds every four to six weeks.
I have two Black Flag bug zappers that I purchased just this summer. With my previous zapper (8-10 years old) I used to take it down and blow it out with compressed air maybe once a week. It finally dawned on me that I could get just about as good a result cleaning it with an inexpensive leaf blower. That way I can clean it in place and it just makes it much more convenient, especially with two units now.
I have the dynatrap unit. Great product. I wish that I purchased the 1 acre unit, cause of my pool area. Had it for 5 years and still does the job. One thing to mention is, to order the bait packets as well. Thanks for the tips
Mine started rattling a day after being on. I returned the product and ordered a new one. Dynatrap should advise customers of this rattle. Thank you for sharing
I have one. The disk above the UV lamps is coated with titanium dioxide, which serves as a catalyst to produce carbon dioxide when struck with UV light. As you know it is a mosquito attractant. Run it 24/7.
I have that exact black flag zapper. Blows out clean & easy with a leaf blower in seconds. Upkeep just depends on the amount of bugs you have. I need to blow it out about every 3 days during the summer.
The best way to trap mosquitos and other small flying bugs is a box fan. I’ve tried the rest and nothing comes close. I’ve used mosquito magnets, 2 types. They cost about 40bucks a month to run. My box fan ran a couple of years in the south Florida rain before it quite working. You simply place window screen on the back. Buy one from Lowe’s or Depot and your ready, add screen and your done. Stupid bug zappers don’t last. I don’t think I ever had one last a year and the bulbs constantly go out.
Yes, Flowtron Zapper is better than the zapper you showed, but both just work on moths, and not effective for mosquitoes. But the DynaTrap you have is more effective for mosquitoes, its paint react to the heat of the uv lights releasing Carbon Dioxide which is very effective as a mosquito attractant, once mosquitoes are close, they get sucked in and trapped.
Cleaning a bug zapper; Unplug it first from the electrical outlet. Have you tried putting a baby bottle scrubber or even a old toothbrush or narrow long bottle cleaners in the pet section of the PetSmart or Hardware Store tape wrap it's on a very long cleaned up stick. Measured length of the stick cut to the length that is needed. Put inside the bug zapperr and bush off the bugs and the wire mesh inside the zapper onto old newspaper for disposal. Dental floss wrapping tie on some antibacterial cloth type wipes on an and of a long stick to wipe off any excess debris off wires.. Do another stick with the wipes for as many cleanups on another sticks as needed to clean some more. Let it dry really well couple hours or enough time to allow moisture to dry off of the unit in the sun prior to any use.
I need one. Got the super juice finally btw. Going to apply it tonight. I’ll check out this bug zapper to. I will probably get the smaller one though your talking about. Thanks doc for your videos.
Dyna Trap is best product to use. It requires the occastional clean out. Many states use a similar units to monitor mosquito's for testing for disease control and they keep detailed records. The most effective product to use.
You say your large Dynatrap is quiet, but it sounds surprisingly loud in the video. In a suburban area, with homes close together, it could easily bother a next door neighbor at night with their window open.
Doc - I know it has been a year since you have reviewed The Dyna-Trap. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this unit after 1 year. I also have woods and a creek next to my house as well. This year I am looking to more ways to reduce the bugs and mosquito's other than using Telstar P and Permethrin around the house. Thanks for all the video's and time you put into making these.
I gave used Dyna-traps for about 6 years now. I’ve used the bug zappers and several of the LPG type mosquito traps. The Dynamic trap along with an attractant for mosquitos has worked better for me than any of the others. I currently have 2 of them.
I just bought the mosquito trap and I've had it running for 2-3 weeks straight and I can see a difference so far. Ps; might want to install a GFCI with an in use outdoor cover on that bug zapper instead of a Ziploc bag lol.
I stopped using my large bug zapper after a large moth ( 3” wingspan ) got zapped and flew out of the zapper towards the grass fields next to my house. Luckily landed on a large paver so no fire. Too close for me.
Great video! Unrelated note.... knock out rose video??? Pruning, deadheading, fert... just saying, knock outs were looking great in this video! Keep up the great videos, 👍🏼👍🏼 from Texas.
I own 2 dynatraps bought on qvc that cover 0.5 acres each and a bug zapper. The new dyna traps release a scent that attracts mosquitos, i add an attractant to both to be on the safe side. The zapper attracts bugs with the blue light, i also add an attractant to draw in more bugs. I will be using ryobi's misting/fogging machine to kill bugs along by backyard fence line.
My dad was injured and his pool is uncovered but not "open" (no shock or chlorine yet) because he needs to redo the liner. Would mineral oil be good for it to stop the mosquitos breeding? We read dawn soap could help because it's wildlife safe but he'd need something like 8 gallons of soap for that.
no not a "low Light" most likely a frequency you can Not see(UV) but Bug Love. The insects are vaporized with each "zap" so no fire hazard, no amps, just volts, that's why it feels like a spark plug, or electric fence, if you have the pleasure of knowing.
Doc, have you had any experience with a trap or something for wasps? (No, not the Anglo-Saxon type!) We have both paper wasps and mud daubers here, and I was stung twice without provocation a few weeks ago. I tried a trap that uses a 2 liter soda bottle with these entrance holes they are supposed to be able to get in, but not out. Our wasps must be so stupid they can't figure out how to get in!
Rick Ferris there is a method using a tub with soapy water nearly full. Placing a board over the tub with some meat attached to the underside of the board just and inch or so above the water level. The wasps go for the meat then fall into the water and drown. A guy in YT did s video on it.
Snacky McGoo the dyna-trap does attract and kill mosquitoes. You can get the attractant packs to place near the top. The lights and heat with the metal in it is suppose to create Co2.
Yep, the paint is emitting CO2, they're is also a steel plate under the dome made with CO2, and it come with an attractant. I have one and it definitely works.
Do you have any ideas on how to get rid of horse flies? I don’t have horses lol. My property backs up to wooded area too and I have a pool. They come and torment me while in the pool. Help please 😩
hey i live out in the country and my bug zapper has gotten so full of dead bugs that it was no longer zapping so they should not be a fire hazard as mine has never caught fire. as for that mesh yes it is a pain to clean out but without the mesh you do not kill any bugs. if you buy a bag of bamboo skewers they are real cheap and those are what i use to clean mine out it takes some time if you let it get as clogged as mine will get. got a new air compressor so this year going to try using a blow gun and see how that works for cleaning it.
Man I hate mosquitoes flies moths and any other night bug. It was the worst thing I had to deal with on my old night job thank goodness I'm dont deal with it anymore
Yup. I blow mine out with my small battery power leaf blower. I once had stuff stack half way up , & a big bug flew in & it was zapping for a continuous 2 min & started smoldering Smoke haha
I started to use city water in trash can and let it evaporate the chlorine out few days then water my garden from it. I have seen baby mosquitoes in the water. If I drill some holes size of like toothpicks, can the adult mosquitoes fly in the tiny holes to lay eggs in my water? Hurry as I need answers about drilling holes as I am ready to drill my lids
@Rational Monotheist I've had one for about 4 years. The first 2 years were good, Last year I had to change a lamp, It hasn't worked right since then. Obviously it was more than the lamp. Decades ago we had an old Sears and Roebuck that worked like a champ for years. We used to joke my dad as he sat under it :-) I'll bet it still works if we could find it.
Had a lizard get trapped in the mesh of my zapper. Poor guy was stuck in the electric chair for hours with constant zapping. The smell was horrible but no fire.
Here's is the thing about big mosquitoes. Those are friendly types of mosquitoes called Crane Flies. They suck the plants nectar or plant stems. So they do much damage on plants than humans.
Mosquitos are attracted to the CO2 and warm moisture in your breath, as well as the smell of lactic acid your muscles produce. These traps are indiscriminate in their killing of bugs. Not all flying insects are bad; some are beneficial.
Thanks for putting this video up, but I would caution against using these kinds of insect traps. The reason is that they don't just kill mosquitoes. They also kill other insects like flies, beetles and moths which are beneficial for pollinating plants, as you have shown in your video. By using these traps, you are harming biodiversity instead of helping it. It might be worth considering alternative methods.
What are the alternative methods? I’m allergist to mosquito bites and mosquitos are so bad outside my door that I can’t spend even 5 minutes outdoors without a lot of damage. I don’t want to kill anything but mosquitos. But it might be worth it for me just so I can not get hurt outside my own home.
