Back again with another terrarium build! In this one I transform a regular hourglass into an awesome terrarium. This is something I've had planned for awhile, but I wasn't sure how to make it work. It ended up being more challenging than expected, but I'm pleased with the final results.
Check out my terrarium builds playlist to see what else is possible with this art form!

Been working on a few pretty involved projects and figured now was a good time to make this build happen... or so I thought until this one threw me for a loop. At first I wasn't sure if I could make it happen, but I persevered! Just keeping it real and showing that even I don't have 100% success all the time.

Thought I'd put this in the comments to help you out in the future. Hole bits aren't very good for thin glass, it's better to use diamond burrs. Just trace out the hole you want and follow along it with the burr on low, medium speed. It'll take longer, but it's much easier and has a very high rate of success. Slow and steady is the best practice for thin glass. I've done it countless times and have had very few failures. You should use a continuous flow of water instead of the ring of putty. The putty and water method will let the water to get cloudy and make it hard to see what you're doing but the continuous flow of water will wash everything away and keep your work area visible as well. Either way you still need water as it'll keep the bit from biting too hard and keep it cool throughout the cut.

My dad just recently lost his fight with lung cancer, and in the couple weeks he was fighting it and pneumonia your videos have been an amazing help in keeping myself calm. Unfortunately he passed yesterday morning and I found myself here for your latest video. I just wanted to tell you thank you for making such relaxing videos, it's been a great way to stop thinking, learn something, and just let the body relax for a short while.

Once you’ve actually made terrariums in annoying vessels (with inconvenient tiny openings), you just KNOW how much of a headache this thing really had to have been. My fingers hurt just watching this,, Who woulda thought a terrarium so simple and quaint could be much more difficult than many larger, more elaborate ones. Awesome one for sure Tanner

if you wanna make a hole in something round like a lightbulb or that hourglass, a really simple method is to tape some sand paper down and then rub the tip of your bulb on the sandpaper to wear it away at the end, leaving a perfectly round hole (and a sharp edge so be careful)

I think it’s possible to put springtails in the hourglass terrarium. They’re hydrophobic and float on water. So if you put some springtails in a glass and pour water on top. Then take some tweezers and a portion of moss. Then use the moss as a life raft for the springtails. Then put said moss / life raft in the terrarium.

Love your videos! Thanks for all you do. If I might offer a tip when staining wood: you can use pre-stain conditioner to avoid darker streaks if you’re looking for a more uniform finish. It may also help you get more even color absorption on the end grain of the wood as well. I have yet to use pre-stain conditioner for myself so take my advice with a grain of salt. In any case, I still think your finished terrariums look fantastic. Your videos have inspired me to make a terrarium of my own, and I am collecting materials for a second one now! Thanks again.

I think it would be really cool if the two compartments could be left connected. I'm not sure how feasible that is, the top compartment might dry out, OTOH, having a tiny cactus growing in some sand in the top bulb of the hourglass would look terrific.
