MOSS - How to forage for moss, how to store moss, and how to care for moss.
I have a confession … two actually.
1. I love winter and
2. I love to hibernate during winter.
I know it didn’t make sense to me for years. I’ve learned not to fight it and just listen to my body. Which usually means lots of quiet time and doing creative projects that bring natural elements inside. Moss is one of those exact things that I can bring inside and create a multitude of things that bring me joy and all winter long.
Today we’re out in nature and we're talking about one of my favorite topics and that's Moss. I wanted to share a bit of knowledge about this plant and show you how to I forage for it, how I store it, and how to care for it.
Coming…. Sunday February 9, 2020 - Garden of Eden Terrarium Video
I will use the moss I foraged to build a beautiful terrarium. I also share with you how to thrift for vessels to use for terrariums and how I put them all together to make a unique one of a kind terrarium with angle statue, flying birds and lights. If your intrigue stay tuned that’s coming next week.

A couple of those are lichens! very biologically different from mosses but just as exciting! If you haven't looked stuff up about them, I highly recommend it! They are a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae/cyanobacteria, live in so many different and extreme environments, and have so many different forms.

I've got so many pictures of moss from my travels. There's something about the various mosses that I just love. Growing up, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents in the far north of the US. There were cedar swamps which kinda flood in the Spring and produce the most amazing moss everywhere. It's so thick and fluffy that you sink into it, even during the dry season. There's so much of it that when you're in there, sound gets absorbed quickly so it's eerily quiet, even for such a rural area. I'll have my ashes spread there when I die. Hopefully I'll become part of the moss.

You made my day. What a wonderful thing to share. When I was in elementary school I got teased for my voice. They would chant “baby talk baby talk it’s a wonder you can walk”. I had a very soft and small voice. For years I suppressed laughing out loud for fear of getting teased. Can you imagine. I didn’t even realize I was doing it. When I did I started giggling out loud all the time ….now my giggle makes others laugh. I am often told how much people love my soft voice but your comment has to be my favorite. Tell your 5 month old that they has restored some broken bits of my heart from many moons ago. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. You just never know what a simple kind thought can make a difference in someone else’s life. Blessings to you and your family. Xoxo jan

Envious of you living in an are where there is such an abundance of well-grown moss. I found some low grown 'generic' moss behind a building in the city. I've been keeping it in a pebble tray with distilled water- one of those little 9" x 4" plastic school supply boxes with a lid. It's been growing pretty good with a little spritz of VERY dilute liquid all-purpose fertilizer once a week. I'll put it in a terrarium when it's grown out more This video was very soothing to watch and the videography excellent. Thanks!

Hello! Amazing video here! It was very informative and helpful as someone who has just been into collecting moss. I want to store my moss by putting it on a layer of sphagnum, but I do have a few questions. 1) Where do I put my container in terms of lighting? Does artificial lighting work as well? 2) How often should I mist and open the lid for ventilation? 3) How long does it last if stored like that? Can it live in the container forever or does it need to eventually be transplanted in soil/on rocks outside? I know that my comment is very wordy, but thank you all so much!
@JanElizabethLakey
@JanElizabethLakey 2 года назад
Hello @hedra s Thanks for your wonderful feedback and thoughtful questions. Let me see if I can answer them. 1. Yes the container needs light. Indirect light. Yes artificial light works. 2. If the container is air tight you don’t need to mist it very often. In fact making sure it’s not to wet is also important. It will mold if that happens. 3. How long it last is a mystery. So many factors. Just like any plant you take out of its environment it will struggle. I have had some last for a few months before showing signs of struggle. It’s best to only harvest moss if you are intending to use it for something. So just put a little thought into it before you go out forging. I have video showing some of the different ways I use moss you may ck those out. The only way I have had success with keeping moss alive for a long time is in a terrarium. So I guess to answer your last question it does need to be placed somewhere in soil or at least sprayed with water soluble fertilizer. If you think about it you have taken it away from any food source. It needs the mineral from the soil, water and sun to survive. All great questions! Let me know if that helps. J

It seems you got a lot of followers now, ... didn´t you? Anyways, I started with a bag of preserved moss, after a previous step I put it in square glass pudding cups, a layer of coal, a layer of gravel, a layer of soil and the preserved moss on top. Four species (I do not know what is the lichen) ... I water it, keep it close to the window ... it looks alive, but it is an optical illusion, it is just wet preserved moss. I will keep waiting to see if I notice real life. All together they look very nice. Two cups contain purple moss, two other cups contain lemon green moss. The rest they are just green different textures. Moss grows natural on the mountains on the Andean mountains row. I bought Scandinavian/Spanish bagged, preserved moss ... (putting my ear buds now ... IHI, NPL.)

This is really calming, saved this to watch later whenever I am in stress. How do you deal with mold in your moss container?
@JanElizabethLakey
@JanElizabethLakey 3 года назад
Shahwalrezal Fitri It’s important to air out your container if it gets too much condensation on the inside. So what I do is open the container for a few hours or even overnight until all the condensation is gone close it back up and then repeat that step until the condensation on the inside stops. Or for the most part is gone a little condensation is OK a lot is too much.
@izchin4335
@izchin4335 3 года назад
Fitri, u can also try adding springtail ( an insect ) to the terrarium, it prevents from any mold outbreak
@tdog3742
@tdog3742 2 года назад
I would suggest adding a charcoal layer maybe mixed with small rosks or pebbles. I would also add in some springtails or even some isopods if you have a bigger setup. Springtails and isopods will eat molds and other debris such as detritus that make their way into your container. The charcoal layer mixed with small rocks or pebbles makes sure that your soil, or in this case, sphagnum moss, doesn't stay too moist. The charcoal also works as a filtration removing toxins from the water.

You should have told people that moss does not like chemicals so you should always use rainwater or spring water so there is no chlorine or fluoride in it.
@JanElizabethLakey
@JanElizabethLakey Год назад
Hi David That makes total sense. I think us humans are the same we have just been convinced otherwise. I source my own spring water for drinking and I would also use it for my plants until 2020 when my collection of plants (do to lockdown) got so big I couldn’t sustain it. I do run hot water and let it sit for days before using it to water my plants I have heard doing so helps the chemical dissipate. Curious if you know anything about it? Maybe just wishful thinking. Thanks for your insight.

Thanks for the info on how to dry it and keep it green. I’ll be out picking moss soon! Can’t wait for your next videos!

You can find beautiful moss even in the city. The best time to go is during rain or after a few days of rain. Look up, down and around older trees, shady areas, near gutters, down spouts or overhangs. Abandoned lots or neglected lots often have moss, or around fences with plenty of leaf litter.

Jan, just found this video of yours and it’s wonderful! I love moss also. I have a nice moss patch at my home, and sometimes I just sit and admire it. I need some help, though, in propagating it and encouraging it to multiply, spread, and fill in. What can I “feed” it? I understand that it wants nutrients and minerals, but how can I administer it?
@JanElizabethLakey
@JanElizabethLakey 2 года назад
Hi Dan I have never tried to grow moss outside. However I would think you could feed the moss thru watering. A liquid Fertilizer. Just make sure to dilute it according to the bottle. You also might think about finding moss (in the forest) and transplanting it into the bare spots. You will have to water it daily until it gets rooted. Hope that helps.

Great video and super relaxing. Does moss have to have soil to grow or can it just be left on top of a stone or rock and water and will it grow?
@JanElizabethLakey
@JanElizabethLakey 3 года назад
Hello Josh. Moss can grow with out soil so yes you could grow it on a rock. Creating a perfect environment is the tricky part.

My moss always gets covered in mold :(
@JanElizabethLakey
@JanElizabethLakey 3 года назад
Meskarune try this ....It’s important to air out your container if it gets too much condensation on the inside. So what I do is open the container for a few hours or even overnight until all the condensation is gone close it back up and then repeat that step until the condensation on the inside stops. Or for the most part is gone a little condensation is OK a lot it’s too much. Once you get this step right and you find balance within your container it’ll be maintenance free for the most part.

Springtails or pill bugs!! The white mold isn’t harmful. It’s just feeding on the dead plant material. All part of a healthy cycle (although unsightly)

I have open top terrariums and still suffer with mold, and i have gone to watering my moss less frequent, but now the moss seems to be dying from too little water. I am at a loss as to what to do
@JanElizabethLakey
@JanElizabethLakey 3 года назад
It can be very fickle to take care of moss especially with an open terrarium. I have lost my fare share of it by over watering or under watering. You may have to start over with a new piece of moss. I have converted open containers to closed ones by adding a glass plate or bowl on top you may try that or just plastic wrap which is not so pretty. Otherwise you must mist it daily depending on how dry your environment. Hope that helps. J
