I really appreciate what Kristi said about these speakers as it pertains to hearing loss. It’s something rarely if ever brought up on these type of reviews across many channels. I have severe tinnitus in one ear that has profound hearing loss. No high end at all and greatly compromised mid. The other ear has moderate tinnitus and some high end loss. It’s horrible and I don’t wish it on anyone. So when it’s acknowledged that everyone is different and it could be more a part of audiophile reviews that many of us have hearing loss, it makes me feel less forgotten. Thank you for the review and thank you Kristi for the inclusion. Deafness is the forgotten or ignored disability. ❤️☮️

Yeah. So it's the JBL Studio 590 that punch WAY above their price point! And right now, they're on sale for $399/1 speaker. They have 2 8in drivers also! These are the ones I'd love for you to review. I'm gonna contact JBL/Harman TODAY and see how they can get you a pair! They're largely regarded in the HT world as one of the BEST bargains!

Great review Andrew. I've been a fan of JBL for many years. They don't always get the notoriety of some of the other speaker lines. But they never seem to make a bad speaker either. I currently run for a front sound stage JBL 290s, a 235c center channel and two Klipsch R-110SWs subs(I was too late to get two JBL 590Ps). In essence you can't go wrong with JBL.

I have the JBL a190s and everything you said I totally agree with regarding the sound characteristics. Easy to place, easy to drive, slightly bright top end, deep boomy bass that gets a little squirrely in the nether regions. The soundstage is wide but not great. People and instrument’s can be sometimes placed and sometimes not. The speakers sometimes gives away their positions and you notice the sound is coming from them. I use these in my gigantic 3 story 30 x 20 living room and they fill the entire space even using a chi-fi dac/amp (Loxjie A30). If you want affordable room filling sound these are a good choice. I also have the JBL studio 530’s and those are tonally some of my favorite. For anything 100hz and above they smoke the stage a190s in every sound category except dispersion and ease of placement. Lastly thank you Andrew and Kristi for all that you do. I’ve bought the Kanto Yu6 3 years ago after your review and have been hooked to the channel ever since. Recently bought a full Polk reserve ht setup because of your R700 review

Opened them up yesterday and played for a couple hours- very impressed. Upon unboxing, you have a choice of rubber feet or spikes- my Sonus Faber Luminas have spikes only. IMHO the plastic outriggers look pretty good and work well. In my room, my ears, my equipment, they sound very balanced in frequency- which is what Andrew's graph showed. I find the highs detailed and engaging, but not "in your face"- the Luminas are more so. Bass is good and more than I expected. I have them out in the room a ways, and closer proximity to the wall would probably help- but not too close. All-in-all, I think these are a great value for the money. I've spent a lot more and gotten less. Quibbles: one speaker came with a scuff on the front, and a couple of speaker grill pins are so tight I didn't dare remove them, for fear of breaking.

Hey man thanks for the extra info. What center channel and surrounds if you used them did you use? I am about to pull the trigger on these a190s and the “matching” 125c as a center and 120’s as surrounds. I wasn’t sure if there would be a blending issue - as so I’ve seen reviews in result of the difference in driver sizes.
@stevenbullock9276
@stevenbullock9276 Год назад
@@ConnorBallin659 Hey Connor. The A190's are the only ones I purchased, but I think you'll be fine with the ones you've listed. The only center I currently have is for the Luminas I mentioned, and that has much smaller drivers than the towers (4", I believe). I was initially concerned about that, but was pleasantly surprised at how well it blended/ performed. Enjoy your purchase!

You guys have been doing a great job setting up a bank of tower reviews! Thanks for not shying away from these big things to avoid the hassle. At right around the 1000 and under price point I think the obvious to request is the Klipsch reference, especially vs the RP line, but since you asked also Emotiva, SVS, and maybe something from the non heritage KLH line up would be cool. Im also excited for that massive center channel coming up, I feel way too often centers are taken for granted. Thanks again!

So a speaker that’s almost perfectly flat in frequency response is too treble forward? I think that says more about modern recording mixing trends imo. I added a preamp with tone controls and it’s the best part of my system. Everything seems to be mastered to sound good on headphones, cellphones, and flat panel TV’s speakers.

My thoughts are, if you can open the cabinets without damage, take these steps. Remove all the acoustic stuffing. Make sure there's no dust on the inside wall, and line the sides with dynamite, or sonic equivalent. This is used in automobile doors or trunks to tame the vibration. Re-stuff the cabinets. Be sure to keep the ports open. I find the stiffer (semi-rigid) open weave padding useful around speaker ports to keep the air passage open. The dynamit or Xmat will do wonders to tighten that midrange.

Good review. And I have to agree based on my experience with the Stage A180s. I caught them on a good sale and put them in my basement connected to an old Denon AVR. Funny timing of this video...the Stage A180's were just on sale for $99 per tower on Harman's website for several weeks. It ended very recently. For that much it would be worth it even if you didn't like them, as you could just sell them for a bit of profit. Enjoyed the review - thanks for the entertainment. Box, port, metal driver, horn, necessary cheap crossovers and terminals - this waste of raw materials didn't stand a chance. Yet somehow it made sense to someone at JBL - like they said, "Designer, your challenge is to make something we can sell with a combination of all the worst speaker concepts." More often than not when you see smoke there is fire, when you see a box there is cabinet resonance, when you see a port there is chuffing/inaccurate/boomy bass, when you see a round metal driver there is shrill, when you see a horn there is compression. Yet they continue travelling down these dead-end roads.

I don't know why the Sony SS-CS5 had to catch shrapnel in this review. They're not in the same price or size class. If they're not upscale enough for your tastes, fine-but it's not only Randy "Cheapaudioman" that sings their praises (he likes them at any price), but Danny Richie (GR Research) also seemed impressed, of course recommending a GR crossover upgrade, which he assembled for sale. You're coming off really snobby. Good review otherwise.
@andrewrobinsonreviews
@andrewrobinsonreviews 2 года назад
To clarify, I have nothing against the Sony per se, but I do not feel that it is a "better" speaker than its asking price., I personally think it sounds or performs like an $89 - $189 speaker should, or is expected to sound. I don't begrudge folks who like it, nor do I judge them for doing so. But I don't want to give folks a false impression of what to expect with respect to the Sony. I think they are a darling in the field right now is because they are readily available and , let's face it, if you offer someone a sub $100 solution it's going to sell or be popular. Again, nothing against the speaker or any person or creator who likes it, but I'm not going to say that the speaker is something that it's not. It's an affordable option, but as we point out in the review (and in the description) there are a number of solutions at or near its price that are as good or better. As for GR, he'll offer a kit for anything he thinks will sell and, well, the Sony sells, which isn't an endorsement good or bad for the Sony in my opinion.
@hankalspach1
@hankalspach1 2 года назад
@@andrewrobinsonreviews A couple of points: Your assumption that the Sonys are popular because (at times) they're a sub-$100 solution is largely incorrect. If it wasn't for the outsized amount of love the SS-CS5 gets on RU-vid, you'd never know they existed. When paired with a subwoofer, they happen to sound nice for a sub-$200 system. And: Danny Richie notes that they sound nice for what they are-and deems them worth upgrading. He has called out systems that command much more respect and investment-and pronounced them not worth the trouble. I've seen more of your videos than I can count-and I believe that based on the sheer number of high-end systems you're exposed to and gravitate towards, a speaker with the pedigree of the Sony would never really have a shot. It's weird that you called them out-given that they don't even suffer from the problems you noted with the JBL towers. Not to say that there are no problems, but the issues you cite with the JBLs would be deal-breakers for many. Finally: Has it really been that long since you were making videos of your trips to record stores-giving yourself a $10 spending limit?

@@andrewrobinsonreviews I'm sure this is a can of worms you can't afford to open, but I've been curious about your room. I'm a fan of the Sonys too, but I respect varying opinions. However, I do wonder if they would perform differently (to your ear) in your new room. The can of worms part is that this could be said about any speaker reviewed in one room vs another. And you're not going to re-review everything (like you did with the Herresey which was a nice vid).

@@andrewrobinsonreviews Sony SS-CS3 owner here: One issue to be made here regards size/dimensions. The CS3s are dwarfed in size by the JBLs (and, at least in terms of low-frequency response, the JBLs offer more "bounce for the ounce"), they'd never work in my listening space viz-a-viz the Sonys, regardless of how much better they are, objectively or otherwise. I *do* get how the A190s can likely ace the CS3s on a few metrics, but in the end it's about fitting just-so in a given listening space, and doing at least a good job *in* that space. That aside, great review (looks like you've settled into your new digs rather well), and Kristi's surprise-take was great.

A friend recently purchased the Sony SS-CS5 from the Sony outlet for about $90. We auditioned them and we were not that impressed. So to us they weren't worth even the $90, and they went back to Sony. But that's just our opinion, a lot of people like them for whatever reason.

Perfect timing! I've been hunting reviews of these this week since I'm just about to go shopping. I'm in the market for floorstanders that are more "full range" so I can get rid of my subwoofer (paired with Klipsch RP600M). Would also like to see reviews of the Polk R600 and ELAC Solano FS287 as well, since these are somewhat in the ballpark I think. I love the look of the 190's and hey it's JBL, they should be able to handle hard rock and electric guitars right? My room is kinda "cold" so I'd rather overdo the bass a bit. The R600 and FS287 seems to have some ridiculous amount of bass with their downfiring bassport. I like that. Give me grunt down low and sparkle at the top. I even consider the more costly JBL HDI-3600, those seems to be some beastly speakers! Thanks for the review, really helpful!

Andrew & Kristi 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼, this review is one reason why you guys are my favorite audio/video related channel. Andrew presents the product on it's own and instead of bashing it's weakness he relates to real world simple solutions e.g. "adjust the tone control". Other reviewers just give you the black and white, good and not so good without thinking the end users common sense enough to tailor the tone to their liking. Nothing is going to please everyone out the box and they know it but do little to advise simple tweaks. Btw... Which Sony speaker were you comparing to the JBL's or did I miss the model? As for your question: Emotiva T1+ , Monolith Encore T6 & Polk Audio Monitor 70 all for under $800. 👍🏽✊🏽

Great content as always. Regarding you last question. I saw one of your videos about you guys going with in ceiling Klipschs. How good are inceiling or inwalls in general for a HT if you were going to use a sub. I have found some really good priced Def Tech Di 6.5lcrs. And because of door location in my room, towers are not really an option I am confused between book shelfs or inwalls. I would not be able to pace the book shelves too far apart and would sit a little lower than I would like them under the screen. Alternative is inwalls on the side of the screen and one as center. I could also go with a traditional center.

Please when you think of buying the JBL stage a190 or a180 or the stage a 170 9:43 jbl's prices for the speaker bounce around more often than a ping pong ball so when you find these speakers under $150 each even as low as $100 each buy them then do not pay what they're asking for them regularly which can be extraordinarily high priced wait for the price to go below $150 per speaker it happens

Hey Andrew I'm a fan of your channel so I greatly appreciate your videos. I agree with Kristi, I own the Stage A170 tower speakers and they sound awesome. Once I added acoustic treatment(diffusers/absorbers) that brightness completely disappeared. I have a Adcom GFA series 2 power amp with a Schitt Saga plus preamp fueling them with Canare speaker cables/interconnects and I'm in Hifi Hog Heaven. I'm curious Andrew why haven't added any acoustics treatment to your space, I noticed when I did it literally changed the sound of all my speaker.

Hi, l have the smaller sibling stage a170 JBL driven with a Yamaha rx-v683bl AVR in a 5.1.2 set up. I enjoy both Music and Movies. Supported by an ELAC 8 inch Sub, just picked a 10 inch Monoprice SW-10 150. I hope you could review the stage a170 with your higher gear, believe it has an 89db sensitivity. I feel it will sound more musically accurate. Gets plenty loud in my Lounge (watch you from Nigeria)

I had to do a doubletake to make sure she was talking about the JBL L100 classic boxes and not the little Polk L100 small bookshelf speakers. Regardless, she likes these better than $4-5k JBL speakers. Interesting!

Hi Andrew and Kristie I'm happy that your doing budget speakers at even such a low price point and seeing such good results it makes having a true decent system seems more practical for the average or less average enthusias. However two very popular speaker I have seen on the market are the polk monitor 70 series ll or any of their elite line do you think that they would be good budget contenders or even worth giving a looking at. I wonder how you think they would stack up against the competition or where do you think they would fall?

This is a super hotly contested market segment. (Don't you love capitalism?!) I count at least 21 different pairs of floorstanding speakers within the range $600 +/- $100. (I bent the boundaries slightly - two pairs are at $498.) I am referring to current street prices (not list) for new (not open box or refurb) speakers. For a blast from the past, there is the Cerwin-Vega SL-28 ($660). Yes, CV still exists. Who knew? 2 x 8" woofers - expect earthquaking bass! For something more refined, might I suggest the Elac Debut 2.0 F5.2 ($600)? There's the Fluence ($600) and Jamo ($698) models that you mentioned. JBL has another entrant - the hulking Studio 580 ($600 - on perennial sale). With 2 x 6.5" woofers and a heavier cabinet, I suspect it might alleviate some of the bass issues that you experienced with the A190. There are three options from Klipsch - runouts of the Mk I versions of the RP-4000F ($548) and RP-5000F ($667), and the heavily "discounted" R-620F ($598). Two options from Paradigm look interesting. The Monitor 7 V7 ($598) and Monitor SE 3000F ($700). Then we get to Polk, with not one or two options - but six! What the heck is going on with their product planning?! In price order they are: XT60 and TSi500 (both $498); Signature Elite ES50 ($560); Signature S60 ($598); Signature S55 ($658); Monitor XT70 ($698). They don't just blanket the market, they smother it. For something a little more exotic, there is the Tekton Mini Lore ($700). I'd love to see some Tekton speakers on the channel. Rounding up the field is the Wharfedale Diamond 240 ($599) and two Yamahas - NS-F150 ($660) and NS-555 ($700). What ever happened to supply chain problems? Spoilt for choice, much.

Just when you think you have the market covered...from another entrant in the "I didn't realise they were still going" category, BIC have two floorstanders in this price range - both at $690/pair. The Klipschish PL-89 and a 15"(!) three way, the RTR-EV15. The EV stands for "Eviction Series", I kid you not. Then there is another JBL - the run-out of the Studio 280, a 2 x 6.5" three way for $578.
