Okay, I admit, the title of this video may be a little misleading, because really there is no “wrong” way to fish a Chatterbait. However, there are certain retrieves that offer a much higher percentage of success, so here are some of my favorites!

@BassMC101 right? Of all the subtle movements involved in holding your rod. Retrieving it. Hopping it. Spinning the reel is the least taxing of everything. Why would I waste my strong hand on that? My friends tell me "I'm doing it wrong" Think they have gaslighted themselves because they bought one with a right hand retrieve and are sucking it up lol

Hi Miles! Great video, sir. I love the yo-yo in the Spring, the largies just seem to go nuts over it when they're in the creek arms but not on the beds yet. I love that 1/2 oz Big Blade CB for the yo yo it falls slower. I can't believe you didn't mention burning it! Maybe you don't use that technique but its FUN and big largies hit it. I like the 3/4 oz Jackhammer and I reel it almost as fast as I physically can. It stays about 3'-4' under the surface with your tip down. Put a trailer hook (or two) on and HOLD ON to your rod.
@SonarFishing

Thank you! I agree with everything you mentioned! I honestly think of a burning retrieve as a variation of the straight retrieve but just reeling it ultra fast, but it certainly is very effective sometimes.

Unfortunately, we don't have any black bass here in Switzerland, but I catch a lot of pike with chatter baits. It works best if you let it sink to the bottom, wait 1-2 seconds, then reel it in with 2-3 turns of the crank and then let it sink to the bottom again. The bites usually come when you start cranking again.

I can catch fish on rattletraps, jigs, crankbaits, worms, flipping baits, topwater, etc. But never on a Chatterbait... And I know guys and fished with guys who kill them on the chatterbait. I've had one bite using a chatterbait and the fish got off at my feet. So never officially landed one.

Super stoked. And then the following day started slaying the bass on a texas rig with a 4 inch yum dinger in guilles suite colour..fishing very very slow. 2 to 3 min retrievals. The biggest fish I catch come from the rip & stop method with a slight alternative. After casting it out to a target, I let it sink to the bottom and give it a couple of sharp rips with the rod to really get the blade thumping. As I let it back down, hold on. It's like the fish watched it fall into the water and drop to the bottom and once it gets ripped away from them, they can't stand it. Rip it like you're trying to get an inline spinner's blades started. It's like a cat toy, I guess.
@SonarFishing

Awesome! I think you’re right with the cat toy analogy. Having kept many bass in an aquarium, they share many qualities with cats, although I never really thought of it in those terms until now!

In my home body of water here in upstate New York, I'm forced to use wire leaders because of the monstrous pike that live alongside the bass in the thick milfoil. Do you have any pointers as to which of your retrieves might be more suitable for a heavier rig? I'm not sure that the 'Rip-N-Stop' would be the best one, given the cover and the wire leader. 🤔
@SonarFishing
@SonarFishing 28 дней назад
Yeah, pike are definitely an issue for sure! I would say if you’re forced to use a wire leader, a straight retrieve with some pops of the rod might be a simple and effective retrieve for the situation.

@@SonarFishing Thanks! I learned an expensive lesson a few years back when I lost 9 spinnerbaits and 4 chatterbaits to pike in a single season. The pond I fish at has an outlet to a major river a few miles away; when the water level was high, the pike came in. Once the water receded, the pike were trapped, and have been in competition with the bass for a few seasons now. 😢

@@SonarFishing ok lmao, let’s give it a go…..I’m headed out to lake fork here in Texas later this morning. It’s been rainy with a cold snap the last couple days, lows in the mid 30’s at night with high 40’s to low 50’s in the afternoons…..Until this snap the water temps on the upper end was 61 to 64 and fish in full spawn. Fish, I’ve been catching are in the back of coves with small arms laying east or west with fish coming off the south side….. most of the bigger fish coming off of Green Punkin pepper flake trick worms thrown literally in the dirt, and pulled about a foot off the bank into the water….. I noticed some brim moving around just before this cold snap….. the weather this afternoon is partly cloudy with temps moving back in to the 70’s….. I know my fish are going to be scattered and moving, I’ll figure that out when I get on the water. With all that said what color would you throw? Will the weight of the chatter bait make a difference? My son has a few of these baits in the back of the boat, so I may have a limited selection, I live about 10 minutes from the lake so I’ll also pass a nice size bait store on my way.

Thank you for the feedback. It is of course not my intention to make it seem as though individual viewers don’t know what they’re doing, and I honestly would prefer to leave a title more neutral myself. Unfortunately the responses to more neutral titles don’t work consistently enough to drive people to click on the video in most cases. I for one would never intentionally put down someone and what I assume they know, or don’t know, on a topic, but I do work very hard on the content that I put out on a daily basis, and I believe it will help people catch more fish and so I want to use a title that can do well from an algorithm standpoint. That being said, a line I will never cross on this channel is picking on any single individual- because in the end I am not to say what you specifically do or do not know. Thank you for watching and your feedback, and I just want you to know that I always strive to be respectful to every person on this channel.
