Most Buffers SUCK!

NOT ALL BUFFERS ARE CREATED EQUALLY. I can’t tell you how many times someone has said to me, “I have a XYZ buffer-bypass pedal so I’m all set for buffers on my pedalboard”. The truth is 99.9% of buffers out there, even from the brands you may like, are inferior buffers.
Most of these buffers in the marketplace are made by individuals that don’t fully understand the conditions of the pedalboard and the impact of multiple impedance changes, large amounts of capacitance from guitar cables, 1/4” connectors, and the circuitry in each pedal that connects the input/output jacks to the footswitches.
By definition, a buffer should have no EQ, no compression, no distortion/clipping, and be 100% neutral even in the worst of conditions. A quality buffer should be able to represent the sound of your guitar, with a 10ft. cable into your amp, even when driving 100 feet of cable after the buffer.
However, most buffers will color the sound even with 10ft. of standard guitar cable after it, and it gets worse from there with more cable (capacitance) seen on the output of the buffer.
To demonstrate this, we’ve set up a test rig with a The Gig Rig QMX true bypass looper, using a Klon Centaur, Boss DC-2W, Ibanez TS-9, and Vertex Buffer Interface all in individual loops, in addition to 40 feet of Mogami 2314 (a representation of what we might see in a typical rig in terms of cable capacitance, 1/4” plugs, inner-wiring in the pedals, in addition to the output cable back to the amplifier). We’ll demonstrate a baseline reference by playing the guitar with a 10ft. cable directly into the amplifier (with no buffer) to calibrate what the goal should be for the buffers to re-create. Then, we’ll select each of these buffers (one-by-one) to hear how well they drive 40 feet of cable (playing the same riff through the same guitar and amp) and let you evaluate which buffer represents the reference sound most accurately.

Your videos about buffering and cables prompted me to run an experiment. I bought a buffer within the specs you recommended, changed my cables to all 10’ cables, and literally with the same settings on everything it sounded like someone lifted a blanket off my speaker. My tone before wasn’t what I’d consider muddy, but was just so much more defined after making those changes. Thanks for that, doc

Ive certainly found using a buffer with appropriate spec (i use bonfied buffer on both input and output) has stabilised my rig and there far less signal loss and tone roll off especially when your using instrument with passive pickups.

what if you’re just running a cable that is less than 10ft, is a buffer still required? assuming that all your pedals are true bypass
@jethro_bardot

A buffer is never "required." It's just an option if you want it. Can you hear a difference between running straight into the amp versus running through the pedals?

@@jethro_bardot I can definitely hear a difference in my own gear and I hear it in the video through the crummy speaker bar on my desk. I don't bother with boring things like dedicated buffers though. I use a compressor as a clean boost when my tone starts getting weak.

Boss pedal sounded best to me. They use different buffers in different pedals as well.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 месяцев назад
It’s not a matter of best, it should be which one sounds closest to the reference in terms of doing the job of a buffer. The Boss loses a few dB and completely changed the EQ. Also, the Boss buffers are almost all the same design BJT and JFET in terms of the input buffer stage and output stage. There are at least two buffers in every Boss pedal and variations that you’ll see, might depend on the input impedance, I think every one has the same output, impedance of 1K ohms.

@@VertexEffectsIncshouldn’t it sound better then the reference? ie. as though there was less cable than 40ft? Or is that what you mean by “doing the job of a buffer”? Because what’s the point of one if the aim is to sound the same 😂
@craigsi16
@craigsi16 5 месяцев назад
@@chesneytube1 it helps if you pay attention to the pictures. The first sound clip was just go the guitar with 10FT of cable, not 40. The others were with each buffer going into 40ft of cable.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 месяцев назад
@@chesneytube1 to reiterate, the reference is 10ft. cable into amp (that's it). The buffer's job to replicate the sound of guitar, 10ft. cable, amp even when running through the test of the 40ft. cable driven by the various buffers.

The Vertex was a clear winner but the ts9 wasn’t bad. The Boss…it wasn’t as loud. Maybe missing transients? Do some make a buffer a certain way because of what it is and where it goes in a chain?
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 месяцев назад
Remember that every BOSS pedal has two buffers in it at a minimum, BJT and JFET. It is typical that these lose a few decibels for every few that you run through, or if you run along length of cable after the output of such pedals.

@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 месяцев назад
If you calculate the average capacitance of interconnections (patch cables and plugs) between pedals, plus the circuitry inside the pedal between the switch and the jacks, plus the cable going back to the amplifier from the pedalboard, 40 ft. of low capacitance Mogami cable to represent that is charitable.

Great video - which pedal should I dish out $250 for a negligible difference in tone at best? Hmmm… let me ponder about how much money I wish to waste. You snobby gear elitists are a cancer to anybody that wishes to enjoy the great pleasure that is playing a guitar.
@BluesDeville
@BluesDeville 5 месяцев назад
I run true bypass on everything to intentionally shave off that shrill high end, and even then it's negligible if there's truly an audible difference that I haven't already dialed out with proper EQ and compression. And, for the record... Neither one sounded better enough to worry about which one to incorporate into your signal chain. Again... Negligible at best. I'm not spending $250 for a dedicated buffer when I could have an actual useful $50 pedal that would accomplish the same task to sufficient standards. Lastly... Spend more time practicing, and less time worrying about this type of menial bullshit meant to depart you from more of your money. Go buy something useful like a modulation pedal instead. You'll get more out of that than you ever will from a snake oil buffer.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 месяцев назад
You can do that, however my presumption is that you like the sound of your guitar and amp alone, and are wanting to re-create that even when running multiple pedals. In your case, I'd still recommend the buffers so you have a consistent impedance on the front and end of the board, but compensate for the loss by using a longer or higher capacitance input cable (from guitar to pedalboard) or using a coil cable so you can keep a consistent signal to the pedals but with your passive pickups (I'm assuming) and the increased cable capacitance, that will be an area the will be super sensitive to added cable lengths. It sounded pretty noticeable to me, especially on the Boss where it loses a few dB. The Klon buffer seemed to clip a little, and so did the TS9 and added some midrange compression. A $50 pedal isn't going to provide a quality buffer, if you think that it will, God bless! There are folks that dig $1 buffets too in Vegas and can tell themselves it's just a good as the Wynn or Bellagio ;). Also, nothing in here refutes practice, so adding that as a counterargument is really unrelated to the tenor of the video.
