I'm half Chamoru and grew up on Guam. You pretty much nailed that whole story on the head. Capt. Leary was the dude who became the first naval governor of Guam. The typical part was he hated the place, even stayed on the USS Yosemite for 3 months rather than live ashore until the former Spanish governor's palace was repaired for him to live in. Effectively left his subordinate, Lt. Safford, in charge of administering the island from ashore. Thankfully, Safford was rather fond of Guam, even kept a diary of his year-long stay there that has since been published. Anywho, Si Yuus Maase(chamoru for 'thank you').

Being from Guam, it's always funny hearing this story. When I was in elementary school, there was an account from a Chamorro farmer. "We thought the Spaniards were cleaning out the cannons. We didn't even notice the change in government" 😂😂😂

My Grandfather was born and raised in Guam. At JUST the right time for the Japanese to -ahem- visit. He was 6 years old when the death marches happened. He told me how they got walked around and around the island. Fall down? Stop? Welp. That was it for you. (Being vague for RU-vid reasons) He already became an orphan at this point, so he didn't have a lot of motivation to go for a walk. Eventually he just fell, giving up on it. But before the soldiers could do anything, a man picked him up, threw him over his shoulder and walked the rest of the way with him. Afterwards, he was adopted by that man, then he grew up, and joined the US Army as soon as he came of age. This doesn't really have anything to do with anything. But it's rare I see Guam mentioned, uh, anywhere. And it makes me remember my Grandfather when I do see it mentioned. So yeah. Bit of story time there.

I was stationed at Andersen AFB on Guam and loved every day I was there. Luckily it never tipped over while I was there.

So, while watching this one I realized something. We became a country by “messing” with England's boat that had tea on it and now we have a “no touchy” clause on our own boats. I love the irony of us having a “heeeeeyyyyyy. We’ve seen this before, because we did it. NO TOUCHY THE FLOATY FORTRESS!”

Frank was living the American dream. He went from a lowly elevator technician to being anointed by a US Navy Captain as the God-King of Guam. Shame he couldn't follow through.

When I was in the Navy, we were told that it was actually a boiler being over pressurized that caused the explosion. Not sure how true this is, but it was what the Navy taught us.

You missed that one of the coal bunkers shared a bulkhead with one of the magazines so a coal fire in that bunker (not an uncommon occurrence at that time) could easily have set off that magazine.

This reminds me of a WW2 movie called “What did You Do in the War, Daddy” where a bunch of American soldiers are sent to capture a town in Italy and they think it’s going to be a huge battle, but when they arrive, all the Italian soldiers are literally just day drinking and playing soccer. It’s actually a pretty fun movie.

If you think that's an overly easy invasion, you should see that time we accidentally conquered California in 1842. Yes, I said accidentally. Commodore Ap Catsby thought the US had declared war on Mexico (because Mexico was also invading the rebellious Alta California, under General Micheltorena, to put down Alvarado's lone Star republic whose flag predated Texas's), and so he just parked the Pacific fleet in Monterey and they surrendered. Best part was, Micheltorena heard about the American commodore up in Monterey, he fled into the interior and lost his guns in a rainstorm. The US government did pay Mexico for those lost arms, but they're still somewhere in the Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo hinterlands. So not only did we get to absolutely humiliate Mexico, but we got some buried treasure outta the deal. How's that for a hilarious tale?

My Grandfather was an Army Radioman, was part of the crew that built the radio station on the mountain, then was on the last ride off the island before the Japanese invaded in '41. My Mom was stationed there in the 70's during the Vietnam conflict, and her and my Dad (who was stationed on the Enterprise CVAN65) got married there. One of these days I'm going to make it there too.

Please do Lauri Allan Torni! Dude was one of the most interesting people of WWII: Fought for Finland in the winter war, then became a German officer in in Austria. After the war, he work on a cargo ship. As soon as the boat sailed into the Gulf of Mexico, he jumped overboard, swam miles to shore, then gained residency in the US as a political refugee. He then went on to join the 5th special forces group where he served 2 combat tours in vietnam, when his helicopter was shot down and he was killed. TLDR: dude hated communists so much he fought them in 3 different wars for 3 different countries.

This is the first TFE video I’ve watched where I’ve audibly said to myself “theres no way that fucking happened” multiple times and it’s a video about a “battle” where nobody died. Amazing stuff

In a discussion regarding a planned military buildup on the Pacific island, Johnson expressed some concerns about the plans to Adm. Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific fleet. "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," Johnson said. Willard paused and replied, "We don't anticipate that." Yes, a U.S. Congressman in complete seriousness expressed concern to the Admiral of The Pacific Fleet during a congressional hearing that too much construction on Guam might cause it to tip over.

When I was in college at UWF, A notoriously progressive university, I took a dictatorship course as an elective because I love history. The class was about mostly Hitler and Stalin, but Castro was a close third. The professor was a Cuban emigre who escaped Castro's regime, Dr Cuzan, who was the department head of political science at the university, and a staunch anti communist. Most dictators from the 20th century were communists. PS My final presentation was on Ho Chi Minh. Anyone who says we didn't belong in Vietnam is a fool or liar. Our politicians are why South Vietnam was failed.
