I think there's quite a cross-over between HGV driving and motorbike riding....they both involve total focus, masses of sntipation and position planning, concentration, eyes in the back of your head and alarmingly people who don't see bikes often seem not to see artics😅

Some 30s do have repeaters but it's quite rare. Generally they tend to be in places where the speed limit has recently changed or is regularly broken. Also varies from County to County. Suffolk has quite a few villages with repeaters for 30s. Nottinghamshire has very few. Thanks for your comment 😊

Well done. It sounds like you did the right thing. More experience riding at the higher speeds will help you feel more settled. Hi, sorry for the delayed reply. I do have "instructor" on my back but to be honest I don't think it makes much difference even compared to when riding my own bike without L plates or instructor hi-vis. Some people will always tailgate others, sometimes unknowingly. Others will always be impatient and lack any form of etiquette or sense of community on the road. Thanks for your comment 😊

I agree that it doesn't always work, but sometimes it really does. Regardless, mirror checks which are visible are a way of giving information to other road users. They are the first sign that you are about to do something, whether it's slowing down, speeding up, or potentially moving position/ turning. Thanks for the comment 👍

It's not that we need a slightly higher speed limit, by doing approximately 2mph over the speed limit simply allows for speedometer error, such that any following vehicles who may be reading higher than my speedo, don't get frustrated that I appear to be doing less than the limit, purely by speedo error. Whatever the speed limit, people will want to break it whether on motorcycles or in cars. All we are trying to do is reduce the possibility of tailgaters. It doesn't always work of course 😂 Thanks for your comment 😊

Hello, yes I'm familiar with those sorts of roads in the countryside. Perhaps I should have made it more obvious that I'm referring to town roads specifically, where side roads are more residential with lower speed limits. Thanks again 😊

@@motorcyclelessonsuk it was actually pretty obvious from the context...it was more flagging up those strange rural eccentricities such as end of a 40mph limit just before a sharp bend when it would have seemed more sensible to go back to the national limit after etc. Have a jolly evening!

Ride at below the speed limit and annoy said drivers or stay safer with the majority of drivers who are more likely to give you a little more space if you at least reach the speed limit? @motorcyclelessonsuk Simply that people should feel more able to drive/ride within the speed limit but then imagine people driving 15mph in a 20... Also that if you are travelling slower, there is more time to react. I suppose I'm looking at it from more of an urban perspective. There's roads that are 30mph but have average speeds at less than 20. To be honest, I was triggered when you said something like inconvenience a motorist or road user but the way I see it is there's no minimum speed on most roads so it's their responsibility to drive appropriately. This was the first of your videos I watched but I'm enjoying watching them and have learnt a few things, thanks.

Yes, it's unusual to find them, but they uaually denote something like that. Recently we've noticed some huge 30moh signs pop up in areas where the locals have obviously been taking liberties on long straight roads. They are placed in odd locations and look like the beginning of the speed limit even though they are already within the speed limit zone. Very odd! Thanks for your comment 😊

Thank you, it was all very exciting, scary but not scary enough for me to think it was too much 😂 My speed was generally around 60 and 65 mph which I felt comfortable and wasn’t a problem for car drivers or myself 😀 Ops sorry going on here😂 but at my age it’s a fabulous feeling that you can teach an old dog new tricks 😂😂😂 Lots of wind buffering but in the end it wasn’t a problem, I also realised that I was holding on to the grips way too tight and then I remembered to relax them like you showed on one of your videos! The other thing that helped me was in one of your videos you spoke about looking far ahead helps to slow the feeling down of you going fast! Ok I’ll shhh now but I am guessing you got the picture and that I’m still excited of that achievement for my self! So am happy to share with you and anyone that has a read! ❤

Well now that is rather odd! The second scenario definitely sounds odd. Does it have the signs on both sides of the road as the official "start of the 20mph zone"?

@@motorcyclelessonsuk Yes it does, and as my sister pointed out yesterday (she's also an adi), it's a very short stretch, perhaps 50 metres at most, but still very odd!!

Commentary Riding (just verbalising what you can see and what you are planning to do in response) is a very useful thing to practice. It makes you focus on what is happening in your field of view. Commentary Driving is normally called for on the IAM and RoSPA advanced tests.

@@DaveOBrien yes, however it can also serve as a distraction for less experienced riders, so I would advise caution on this for beginners and novices.

Hello, watch the very beginning of this video again up to 01:33, including reading the text for mistake #1. If you don't see a change of speed limit sign at a junction and there are no side roads, its safer to assume the speed limit has remained the same, but keep looking for repeater signs. Remember 30s very rarely have repeaters, and if it's a built up area, it's likely to be 30, if there are no repeaters telling you otherwise. Thanks 😊

Haha its simply a very easy bike to ride. Very happy in 6th gear at 30mph and still pulls like a train. Very forgiving yet great fun to ride when it's in the higher rev range 😊 Thanks to Honda for a great bit of engineering 😁

Hello, you're welcome. Imagining you are talking about a single carriageway scenario, if you feel confident to do so having sufficiently assessed all potential hazards for an overtake, you can overtake if you wish to, without breaking the speed limit to do so. However if you do not feel it is safe to do so or you are not yet confident enough to do so, usually an examiner will not necessarily mark you down, bearing in mind your status as a relative novice (you may not feel confident or experienced enough to safely overtake). If it is totally clear and there is a long and empty stretch of road with absolutely no other hazards, it is vaguely possible the examiner might suggest an overtake would have helped you to make progress, but they may not give you a fault for it. It will come down to the situation at hand and examiner discretion as to how they perceived the situation and your ability to safely deal with it one way or the other. If the scenario is on a multi-lane dual carriageway then yes of course you could be going for the overtake if it is safe to do so as it is inherently safer and easier to overtake in that particular scenario with good observations and procedures being followed. We should be riding at the speed limit if it is safe to do so. If the road ahead is clear and safe we are at higher risk from tailgaters and people looking for the dangerous overtake by not doing the speed limit. "It's a limit not a target" is an old phrase no longer suited to the modern impatient world I'm afraid. But the biggest part here is "if it is safe to do so". Clearly is there is a hazard ahead, we may not be riding at the top end of the speed limit. Not knowing the road is not a reason to ride unnecessarily slowly. Forward planning, bend planning, and anticipation skills should enable you to ride any road without dawdling. Thanks 😊

Hello, thank you! I would leave at 70 unless there is a queue on the slip road, or the slip road is especially short (thus not enough time to slow down before a bend or junction). The traffic behind you on the dual carriageway may not be preparing to leave with you, and may not be prepared to slow down for you to exit. The slip road is there to allow you to do your slowing down on it, not before it (with the above exceptions). I hope that helps. Thanks for your comment and good luck next time 😊

Hi, to check the chain tension the bike should not be running. Never put your hands near the chain when the drive is engaged and rear wheel is turning. Ask your local mechanic to show you how to check the chain tension yourself. Thanks.

At the traffic lights, you will see the blue car in front of you has its indicator on to turn left

At the time I turned left there were no other vehicles behind to benefit from the indicator (the white car in my mirrors after I've turned didn't materialise until after the turn, having come from the opposite side at the lights). That said it probably wasn't intentional. It wouldn't necessarily be a fail on the test. Depends if there is anyone else significant who would benefit from it like following traffic. Even then it would more likely be a fault, not a fail because it isn't unsafe, dangerous or inconveniencing anyone else. Good observation skills though, well done 😂
