I was about to call a plumber and was gritting my teeth for the expense. Tightened the packing nut, no more leak!! Thanks so much. 65 years old and happily handy here.

When using a wrench to tighten the hose connection, don't squeeze the clamps more than you need to just hold the connector and make it turn. If you squeeze too hard, you can bend the connector "out-of-round", which increases the probability of leaks.

I thought I was facing a major plumbing project to replace both my outdoor hose spigots that were leaking. After watching this, it was about a 30 second fix to just tighten the packing nut. No more leaks. Thanks Scott! Really appreciate your videos.

As always, Scott offered the clearest and most concise fixes to everyday home maintenance topics. Mine started to leak and it took me but 10 sec to slightly tight the nut holding the bib together as Scott suggested, try this easy way first before you run to the store for parts... i almost did !!

Tightening the nut did the trick. Super easy and quick resolution. Thought I was going to have to turn the water off and disassemble the faucet. Took me longer to grab a wrench then it did to actually fix it. Packing nut tightened and no more leak. Thank you!

Thumbs up for your work & thanks. Tightening fixes it for me, essentially always. I think I replaced the packing material 13 years ago when we bought the house. We also use a quarter-turn valve for everyday use, so that the main valve is opened and closed once or twice a year.

2 different issues here. Washer at the hose connection is always missing or rotten washer. Easy. Water spraying from the stem is almost always loose packing nut that a half to full turn of the wrench fixes. Worst case is new packing or replacement of the hose bib. My experience with apartment maintenance. And contracting. Im a licensed California contractor. Good video and thank you

OMG, I can't believe it. It was just as simple as tightening the rings from where you turn the spicket on and off. I'd replaced the downstream parts a couple of years ago and that fixed that leak. Thanks for suggesting tightening, I was thinking it was the washer. This took me less than a minute verses shutting off the water and disengaging the valve. Appreciate the simple fix!!!

I always tighten the packing nut just enough to stop the leak and then cycle the valve shut and then back open. Over tightening the packing nut can lead to so much friction that the stem will actually shear off.
@ShawnC22002
@ShawnC22002 Год назад
I had one just a couple weeks ago that - after using it for the first time in months, when I turned it off it was leaking bad/practically squirting from around the stem/packing nut. I went ahead and tried my hand at desoldering and soldering a new one in its place. A tip that I learned the hard way was that using MAP gas instead of regular propane made all the difference!
@JettaTDI2005
@JettaTDI2005 Год назад
Hey Scott, I normally go out every year around March to change the washer inside the stem and also replace the washer that belongs to the hose and to the vacuum break connection. Doing that each year to make sure that we have no issues or no leaks.

My faucet looked like a small fountain whenever it was turned on. I was expecting a fix to require replacing the entire faucet. Searched online for a guide to repairing or replacing the faucet and found your video. Tightened the packing nut and no more fountain from the faucet. It's also good to know you have a video on how to rebuild the faucet when it reaches the point where tightening the packing nut no longer works. This was a simple fix, but it always feels so satisfying when I fix a nagging issue like this.
