Today we're looking at some common visual illusions of the forehand, backhand and the volley.
These are the ones I have encountered most times when teaching tennis to adult tennis players and as we discuss a certain stroke I realize that their mental image is wrong.
And you cannot correct tennis stroke technique just mechanically without correcting the mental image because it would eventually just revert back to what the player imagines.
Since most people learn tennis stroke technique visually it's very important that the mental image is correct.
So in this video article we'll cover:
- the forehand & backhand contact point distance,
- swing path,
- the height of the preparation,
- the illusion of the wrist slap,
- the open racket face on the backhand slice and
- the volley swing path
In the next installment we'll take a look at the most common serve visual illusions so stay tuned!
0:00 Intro
0:20 Contact Is Not To The Side
1:38 Swing Path Is Not Horizontal
3:08 Preparation Is Not High
6:02 There Is No Wrist Slap
8:57 Racket Face Is Not Open
10:41 Volley Swing Path Is Not Forward

Excellent video. There is another illusion that might be interesting to study, the forearm rotation illusion on the topspin forehand. Slow motion videos show that in the majority of the forehands of top level players, the internal rotation of the forearm (giving that "windshield wiper movement) occurs after the impact with the ball, and that the wrist is static through contact. Many may think that it occurred during impact, making it look as if the wrist participates in the generation of topspin, when the wrist actually kicks in after contact, as a release of the racquet.

Illusion #1 and #2 has changed my forehand for good. My FH used to breakdown during matches because I was exactly doing what you described as an illusion in 1 and 2. I played a set with a partner keeping in mind what you said in 1 and 2. Although I lost the set, the FH was solid, consistent and confident. Thanks for taking the effort to make this video. Can't thank you enough.

Nicely done, as always, Tomaz. Lots of illusions on the serve. Without the deconstruction of them, you can develop some very bad habits. Thank you!

Thank you Thomas! I tried your technique on backhand today and it worked so well! I always have problems hitting two handed backhand. No matter how much I tried I never hit it right. Now I know the problem is in my head. I pictured hitting backhand was like sweeping from side to side. Today I kept telling myself to swing and hit forward and my backhand was much better! Thank you. You are the best coach! Just a small shift in mind results in much better hit. And it is so kind of you for teaching us all this. I watch almost all of your videos previously and I improved my forehand a lot, I really enjoyed hitting forehand. Now I cannot wait to practice again to improve my two handed backhand and enjoy it too!

I like these video series overall, however, I would stay away from the whole "bowling" analogy. Yes, the arm in tennis doesn't really move in a discus like way, but it does not move in a bowling like way either. I've had students who've had true bowling-like motions where they "scoop" up the ball from the bottom in a bowling like manner (especially in volleys), that needed to be corrected with a proper swing. I know you're trying to describe an "illusion," but I've always used "bowling" as the antithesis of anything tennis related... I do like the rest of the video, especially in regards to the open racquet face on the backhand slice. It's very easy to think that the racquet face is completely open all the way through, but at contact it really does flatten out and you can only see this clearly in slow-motion video.

Good point. I think his overall point was captured but you’re right that it’s not accurate enough as a generalization. If he gets more detailed, Tomaz can get into groundstroke “illusions” for different depths of shot...

To be honest, specifically this bowling analogy improved my forehand immensely. Perhaps there are situations where it misleads people that have seriously broken technique, but for me it helped engage upper body and lengthen the swing and disengage the hand/arm which was doing too much before.

Tomas this is such a great idea for a lesson. It reminds me of your swings without the racquet forehand lesson. I wonder if you could do a no racquet series for full swings so we can see what we are actually supposed to do. Then we can do shadow swings then add racquet etc.

I like your videos. Some how I am not convinced with this video. Bowling action which showed holds good only when the ball keeps low. As the height of the ball increases plane of the hand becomes more horizontal. Isn't the path of the wrist a circle? I strongly believe that the path of the wrist is a circle! Please correct me if I am wrong!

But modern forehand has gotten much more horizontal swing, IMHO.
@feeltennis
@feeltennis 3 года назад
I teach fundamentals to recreational tennis players. The fundamentals of pros are visible when they warm up. They will prefer to hit low balls around knee height if they receive them. The swing path depends on the height of the ball. Lower balls have more linear path, high balls have more horizontal path. Because pros spin a lot in matches they get a lot of high balls hence they need to swing more horizontally. That IS NOT what we should teach initially to beginner and intermediate player as they will not develop a clean powerful contact with the ball.

@@feeltennis The fundamentals of chemistry taught in grades schools are correct and adequate. But you have to wait until college or graduate school to learn about the exceptions!!!
