When we are talking about the sprints, and about the rules in sprints here it is. 2.3.036 Sprints Riders shall be strictly forbidden to deviate from the "lane" they selected when launching into the sprint and, in so doing, endangering others. The very important thing here is the difference between "Line" which you are calling it Ewan and the rule "Lane" I understand those 2 terms in different ways. A "Line" - a path that is straight in 1 direction. this line does not have to be the shortest way to the goal line. so it could be sort of a diagonally sprint from the middle and slighty to the left. (Which is mainly the case in Dylans crash in Tour de pologne. A "Lane" is a selected path that goes parallel with the road to the finish line. here you can not deviate to the left or right when you have clear air in front of you. otherweise you would break the Lane you currently in. (Take in mind there are finishes where there could be a road arch, The same rule applies, but keep in mind that the lane the riders have to follow is the parallel lane than the road arch) I hope this makes sense.
