Most DANGEROUS Setting In Photography

The most dangerous setting in photography. One that can ruin shots if you are not careful. No amount of autofocus, face/eye autodetect, or the latest and most fantastic camera processor can fix if this setting is adjusted incorrectly.

Dear Chris! I'm a Ukrainian girl who has been living in Denmark (already 5 years) but the rest of my family is still there in Ukraine. But that is not the point. The point is that around a year ago I bought a new camera - Fujifilm XT3 and I love it! Later when I started to figure out how to manage all these technical parts of the camera, all these lenses, and how to deal with it - I found your videos and they helped me a lot! You here, on RU-vid helped me to be more confident in my actions and not take some things so seriously. Your personality is inspiring me as a half photographer (the other half is trying to manage not the easy life of an immigrant). So please, keep going on what you're doing here. Do not give up no matter what, at least because one girl in the other half of the world is not giving up. Thank you!

Chris I started photographing on Black Friday, almost two years ago. I remember that because that day I bought my first Fuji camera (xs10) and a lot of my choice had to do with you and you're channel. I learned so much from you and youre channel, and in few months my pictures were on the cover of the biggest paper, bought the XH2 and made hundreds of portraits for news & magazine pieces. I had my pictured bought and used In international publications, book covers, posters, even had one exhibition and sold almost all of the pictures, and only now I understand I never said - thank you. so first - thank you a lot for setting me on the track! and making me feel like I know what I'm doing. but I have one thing far more important thing to say - THANK YOU! Thanks for the kind words you said. as someone who lives in the place that suffer now so deeply, your words were like a river of light to a poor aperture. I was waiting for your video to remind me of the kindness, normality and beauty that you bring to the world with your videos, and the kind and sensitive way you do that. thanks a lot and please remember that this videos, are of great significance in the large scheme of things. ❤

Your dedication to Fujifilm and even teaching people about the basics in photography is a blessing Chris. I’d love to see some comparison videos. Ie whether new comers to photography and wanna specialise in portraits should use this lens over this one? Or perhaps like me, when it comes to wildlife I’m unsure whether to go for the XF70-300 or the XF 55-200? Regardless. You are the best teacher online. You make everything so simple to understand. Even tho I still don’t get which f stops to use, how to take a clear picture of a fast moving object as opposed to a portrait of a person. As Yoda says ‘much to learn you still have’. We love you Chris. ❤

Well Done, Chris. Excellent video and I think we all echo your sentiments about the current world crises. The two most serious current conflicts are causing untold damage, injury and death to innocent civilians on both sides and somehow we have to pray that this madness stops. But the same goes for so many other areas of conflict at the moment and we should all spare a thought for the helpless victims and try anything we can to persuade those in authority to help resolve all the problems. And our persuasion should be strong but legal and non-violent.

Thank you so much! Especially with my one year old son it's hard to hit the focus with the aperture wide open. Recently I took a beautiful shot of him a f 1.2. It looked perfect on the cam but zoomed in his nose and one eye were sharp, the rest wasn't. In the future I'm raising the ISO instead of lowering the aperture when inside.

Such a good and important video, after almost 2 years I still catch myself turning every lens up to full speed and making mistakes like this. The noise improvement alone in the new Lightroom Classic is so damn good that even images with ISO 12500 still look as if you had shot them with 1000 ISO. Of course you don't get a nice bokeh with a slightly closed aperture, but sharp main targets are more important in my opinion.

Also affecting depth of field- size of sensor. This is why he uses medium format to demonstrate minimal depth of focus. The smaller the sensor, the more depth of field you’ll have at any given aperture setting. A 2/3” point and shoot will have far more depth of field than a micro four thirds or APS-C sensor at the same aperture setting. Another point to consider- wide open is also the least sharp the lens resolves the image. Going from 1.7 to 2 or 2.8 not only increases depth of field, it also will be a sharper image! This also applies to lenses that aren’t as ”fast”(able to be opened up more). Your image will be sharper one or two increments or “stops” less wide open. Say your lens’ widest is 3.5, f4 or f5.6 will be sharper and have deeper focus range. For portraits with my Fuji X-T5 and a 1.4 lens, I can still get lovely blurry backgrounds at f2 or 2.8 but get both eyes in focus. For groups 6 or 8’ away, I shoot at least f7 or f8 to get everybody in focus. Telephoto lenses tend to have less depth of field than wide angle lenses too! So much to consider. Test test test!

Sage advice. It always amuses me that some people think that every modern camera can take sharp, visually appealing images straight out of the box. They seem to think that learning technique, understanding the technology, setting the camera's settings up for the subject, and training and practicing are, today, unnecessary. Then they blame the camera for unsharp, lacklustre images! As always, a great instructional video.

My “pet peeve” is these same folks will also run to a FB page and ask “what settings do I use for shooting (insert situation)” rather than actually learning even the basics. Then they get mad when you tell them they probably shouldn’t be shooting someone’s wedding if they don’t understand even the basic fundamentals of photography 🤦🏼‍♂️

One thing I learned very on when beginning my journey as a professional wedding/portrait photographer with Al Gilbert was to not focus on an eye. Instead focus on the bridge of the nose. Now you can use DOF because more behind the subject is in focus than in front, the eyes will be in acceptable focus. With digital software sharpening of the eyes can easily be accomplished. With multiple subjects if possible use as close a equal plane of focus as is possible. Otherwise simply adjust the f stop based upon the lens in use to accomplish the best focus possible. One thing in YT videos I have noticed that often folk using L/R eye focus the far eye is selected thus making the near eye even more out of focus based upon the various factors affecting DOF.

I fell into that trap early on in photography of always using the widest aperature possible with my manual primes, as I've gone on I've not been not afraid of using high iso's and narrower aperature, I have been using all Fuji glass now with the fastest lens being a 2.0 (XF23mm). But a big curveball in my learning is that I recently picked up a Sigma SD Quattro as a form of escape from a lot of stuff in the world, where that sensor type demands the lowest possible ISO, thus I've been reconsidering using wider aperatures even on a tripod

Was guilty of this until I started shooting film. Some of those analog cameras only go up to 1/500-1/1000 of a second on shutter speed. And when you can’t lower your ISO, you have to stop down. It broke me of that habit real quick.

It seems to be a trend that many reviews push, but even slow lens can give great results used correctly, one of my sharpest lens was a very old sigma 18 to 125mm with a f3.5 to 5.6 on my old fuji s2pro , remembering i did a shoot and we enlarge to 2.3meters in length.
