I know rugby refs aren't perfect all the time, but man i love how much respect they demand from the players and the way they conduct themselves. I really wish soccer/football had the same attitude towards referees and respect.

Solution to this is bring back proper rucking. Without it there is limited chance to regain possession unless you dislodge the ball or stun the carrier in the tackle. If the objective is ‘hit as hard and high as you can get away with’ instead of ‘bring the player down asap’ you end up with head shots

The clothesline tackles were all most deserving and where there was clear intention to hit someone in the head or spear tackle. But some of the tackles were just split-second mistakes which were purely accidental and no amount of legislation can prevent.

Has what a player said to the ref during the conversation EVER changed the outcome. “Oh, you make a good point there. As the ref, I hadn’t thought of that. Perhaps I should reconsider?” . If the players want to ref, then quit and take up refereeing.

it has but only ever if posed in a productive way, TJ Paranara who did such with Angus Gardner in 2017 and was correct and the referee (Gardner) corrected his decision bc it was done in a polite manor. Furthermore, I believe Super Rugby has introduced a "captain's challenge" rule where the captain can ask for a decision to be TMO'd and the referee (I believe) HAS to look at it, if the captain is wrong then they lose their challenge, if the captain is right then they get another. Again, this is all off of memory and I could very easily be incorrect

If I remember rightly this was just after the governing body started to crack down on dangerous tackles. At the time he was one of the first to be sent off. Nowadays it does seem like it would be closer to a yellow but in 2011 I think that was the right call.
@matthew3078

@@philsswweightlossdiary2944 I actually kind of think the opposite. With the new clamp down at the time yellow would have been expected (although red makes sense as part of trying to stamp it out of the game). @@matthew3078 I think that’s fair. The reason I said it would be a yellow today is because you could argue he landed on his shoulders rather than head and neck. But either way he did drop him so it’s a reckless tackle. I do remember it was very controversial at the time.
@matthew3078
@matthew3078 2 года назад
@@philsswweightlossdiary2944 that's true though, I think the current reffing process is much more step-by-step/tick box-y, so they probably would focus more on the landing position, so it could well be yellow for some refs

@thecoderofyoutube 2 года назад
So what happened was the directive went out to refs just prior to the tournament that tip tackles like that were to be punished with a red card except no one got one right through the tournament, only yellows had been issued. This is the thing I don't get in Rugby. Jumping to catch the kicked ball is the aggressive move. If two players are running for the same ball, which they can both legally catch and have clear benefit to doing so, and one of them makes the aggressive move to jump and the other does not then the player who stayed on the ground is almost certain to get a red card for undercutting the jumping player. Either play with almost reckless aggression or get sent off... Seems unplayable if you are pushing for every advantage the way you have to at a competitive level.
@oysterman250
@oysterman250 2 года назад
There is definitely an argument to support the point you make. Part of the issue is that it never looks good when a player on the ground makes contact with a player in the air - the player in the air invariably gets up-ended and the landings often look painful - this one's going to keep generating debate...
@cambyses1529
@cambyses1529 2 года назад
just wait till his toe touches the floor then hit as hard as you can - perfectly legal and very likely to win a turnover. Also, safe as less likely to hurt the guy in the air.
@ynotnilknarf39
@ynotnilknarf39 2 года назад
Yes you can do that and it Also keeps you safe as the tackler, you know (or should do) if you're not going to get to the ball .... BUT, some are a case of one player jumping forwards into you, what can you do then unless you can predict exactly what they are going to do before they do it? The player doesn't jump and easily takes the catch and offloads whilst you dither about not wanting to contest/jump for the ball. You contest the ball but the officials deem you're at fault when the defender jumps into you or contact in the air when there's a legitmate contest. You get beaten in the air the defender is then out of control due to their jump and catching the ball and has an awkward landing ... = red card for you!
@adampoultney8737
@adampoultney8737 2 года назад
2:28 Although it is not what the rules say, I believe it was the red player who performed the dangerous play. Jumping recklessly should not be allowed, he effectively kneed another player in the face who chose not to jump. The responsibility should be on the jumping player to not jump into someone who is competing for the ball. Tackling a jumping player should remain banned but this is not tackling

@evildan524
@evildan524 2 года назад
I think a large part of the problem is that there is no mitigation for incidents that are dangerous but obviously accidental. There is a big difference between an accidental head clash and a player that leads with the head in to a collision. Likewise there is a big difference between a player that collides in the air as opposed to a player that is tackled in the air. If a player deliberately commits an illegal act that could or does result in severe harm to an opponent should be shown a red and the team should play with the penalty of one less player for the rest of the game. For an accidental act with a low degree of carelessness or recklessness perhaps there is a place for a lesser punishment such as the 20 minute red card. Any professional rugby referee with a reasonable amount of experience should be able to determine the degree of intent and culpability of the offending player. The number of red cards for accidental head clashes at the moment is just ridiculous. Instead of spending 10 minutes watching replays to determine point of contact and degree of danger just spend 1 minute deciding whether or not the player was committing a deliberate act and punish accordingly.

Honestly, quite a few weren't deserved. When it's unavoidable because both players are committed, what can they do??? It's bullsh*t with some of l those calls in all honesty

Strait arm to the throat or head should be red card. Plenty of these calls are not even a yellow. So I agree, not all should be red

Tackle height, sort it and many of these would not have been an issue, high risk and reward, it's coached and is going to be a big issue a RWC.

The Warburton red in the Semi final was never a red. Its soft in comparison to a lot. He went passed horizontal but he lands on his back.

He let go of the player as he was falling so it was reckless as well as dangerous. Unfortunate but the correct decision.

Tackler has the choice to tackle low or high. Tackle low and you stay on the field, tackle high and you run the risk of the early bath.

Ball and all tackle is legit, going low equals even more chance of a concussion, or have you not watched rugby for more than 5 minutes?

The first one SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A RED BUT A YELLOW. There was head contact but the ref said that there was NO MITIGATED FACTOR, when in factor there was a major one the ref completely ignored which was the Hooper was already being tackled into the head contact with Hamish who was standing his ground. It was the person who made the first tackles on Hooper, cause the accidental head contact. A penalty or yellow card only. A red card is WAY TOO OVER THE TOP by the useless Aussie Gardener or Berry. They need to be fired and never allowed to ref every again.

Very disappointed that Sam Warburton’s tackle against Leclerc is included in this. It was highly controversial at the time. A yellow yes, but not a red.

Rugby is a badass sport, alright? I played football and american football and was always kind of a rather physical player (yeah, that's actually possible in football) but i would never play rugby, some of those hits would be nasty even with pad and helmet and i would not risk my health that way. So that being cleared, why does this badass sport have this pathetic sounding whistle and comically small cards? It's fucking weird.

there is nothing deserving on the card system it is killing rugby end of story, when a player fails to catch a intercept he gets a yellow yard!!! in rugby they tackle the crap out of one onother from the first day and look to compare american football, wrestle one another on the field and there is no cards being dished out
@ynotnilknarf39
@ynotnilknarf39 2 года назад
Yellow cards in union for failed interceptions is a disgrace and doesn't seem to match the laws of the game. Unfortunately in league you'll never ever see a penalty even when it's a clear knock down, this frustrates me just as much as the yellows in union. Laws and application of such can vary wildly and interpretation makes fans and players froth, particularly when that varies in a match by the same official for same infraction. Worse when one gets let off completely and another lesser gets blown for.

Look at league they do tackles like this all the time do you see them complaining?,no they just get on with it union is turning into tiddlywinks now because of those softcock NH rules.Some deserve to be cards but they're going overboard now.Did soccer players make the rules up or something hahaha
