In this video I describe some difficult parts of the sectional chart for student pilots. This is a good resource for new pilots to learn about the sectional as well as a place for more experienced pilots to review. Once you have watched this video, I recommend checking out this video for a quiz on the airspaces and other parts of the sectional: • Airspace Quiz for Glid...

I just realized that at 1:11 I said there weren't any questions on vfr reporting points literally right after I said I got a question on it on the written test😭,there ARE questions on vfr reporting points on the written test.

I also like your presentation. However I did not like "WTF" title at all. I've been involved with aviation for 55 years and always have felt we should keep it professional. Leave that kind of language to the rappers. With that said, you did a very good job in your presentation. Keep up this work!

Or just keep the prim and proper for Sunday school. Absolutely nothing wrong with a WTF in a RU-vid title. It got your attention, didn’t it?

I would like to see a return to in depth instruction by knowledgeable instructors.

You and me both! I have been a CFI since 1979 and a CFII since 1981. I belong to several aviation FB pages and it never fails to amaze me how many (new) "instructors" are always asking questions that they should already know the answers to. They were being taught those things during all of the training and "instruction" that have received from their "instructors". .

Let me try to address the question about the “-30” example shown on the sectional. At my home airport in Hayward, CA (KHWD), our Class D airspace is completely covered by the OAK Class C, the floor of which is 1,500. So, our Class D goes up to, but not including 1,500 feet msl. There’s nothing about 1,499.999999 feet. It simply means, “STAY OUT!!!” of Class Charlie airspace by remaining BELOW 1,500 feet. That’s what the FAA means with that symbol. That marking absolutely means something. It means that if you don’t reach that altitude prior to leaving the Class D, you won’t hear the controller use these dreaded words: “I have a number for you to call when you get on the ground.”

@@TenMinuteTrips exactly. The question is if you’re at 1500 ft in your example, which airspace are you in? Very important question due to the much higher requirements for the class B

My private, instrument and commercial examiners favorite thing was to pull out a sectional chart and point to something, and you better know what it is or means. So I studied the charts until I knew everything I could. I was an instructor back in the early 2000’s. It looks like there might be a couple new things on the charts, or my memory fades.

When I started my ground training, I learned the sectional chart really well and would tell people I wanted to impress with my newfound piloting esteem to pick something on the chart and I would tell them what it was. In the end I actually ended up not knowing as much as I thought I did about the chart. Actually, a lot of the items in this video are ones I learned from reviewing my weak spots after being embarrassed by not knowing something.

I like your presentation, and see that you were at aviation day. I was flying the red and white R44 helicopter that landed at the hanger. It was fun to see that.

When I was putting the clips from aviation day in the video I actually wondered if anyone would recognize the location and comment. Super cool that you were there too!

Ah yes…..my old CF 16 sectional. UAO (Aurora State) was my home base FBO. I have so many pencil and pen lines on that map all pointing to UAO, that I wore a hole in the center.
