Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

I couldn't even imagine doing all the work outside in Portugal heat, we struggle building things during 25 degree heat in the UK 😂🙈
@sailaway1015
@sailaway1015 Год назад
In the dry heat of Portugal, up to about 35°C is doable if well hydrated. After that only wading in a little pool or heading to the beach will do... I'm lucky that I'm only 35 min from the beach and on a hillside where the winds regulate our area well..last summer we we're locked in the house three times between noon and 6 pm(hottest part of the day) for a couple days each... May, July, Aug....the rest of the month was warm and comfortable... So it is manageable...

RE: Dogs Swimming - I had a wonderful dog who had been abused and abandoned. He was still a pup when I got him and he hated or feared the water. One day I forced him to join me in a lake. I stood in the water and got him to stand in it and splashed him a little. It was a hot day and he had a long coat. So, in spite of his resistance, I know he felt better as he did not protest. I took future opportunities to lure him in and each time it became easier. After a few exposures he eventually learned to love the water and I couldn’t keep him out. Of course, I praised him widely every time he went in and, while I didn’t use treats, I imagine treats would help. I wouldn’t give up on him. He’s young. You might even consider putting him in a boat or some floaty device. My pup was way to big fir that option.

RE: DONKEYS -- Plan on getting 2 at one time. Donkeys require a companion donkey in order to be content. Without such companionship they develop behavioral problems and can become irritable and even aggressive, both symptoms of depression. They are highly sentient beings, which make them wonderful pets and very loyal.
@moonhunter9993
@moonhunter9993 Год назад
Yes, donkeys also need a lot of attention. I personally prefer mules. Might not be easy to find as few people give away a (good) mule. What do you think? Do you have any experience with mules?
@Ana-Maria-Sierra
@Ana-Maria-Sierra Год назад
@@moonhunter9993 None, but, I understand, donkeys make much better pets than mules.
@moonhunter9993
@moonhunter9993 Год назад
@@Ana-Maria-Sierra Really? Interesting, I heard the opposite. As (most?) mules supposedly are the best of both, I've heard they tend to be much easier to handle (although I am sure you get exceptions) despite their reputation (stubborn as a mule).

Love the vlog very interesting. We lived in Spain for 10 years, but not off grid, we loved it there, as you wasn’t keen on the long hot summers but my husband became very sick with cancer so we returned to the UK. We were pensioners so not young like yourselves, my husband passed away in 2015 and now I am living with my son in the UK. Must admit I loved my years in Spain but did miss my family especially my grandchildren. Good luck with your life in Portugal.❤️❤️

Tree crops that should do well in the Castelo Branco growing conditions are pomegranate, pistachio and almond. Anything grown in the famous San Joaquin Valley inland farming region of California should work. Both areas have long, hot summers and can have repeated frosts in winter. The California valley is warmer and drier, but the differences shouldn't be show-stoppers, and there are always varieties more suitable to warmer and cooler conditions.

I don't enjoy sauerkraut, but found a great "canned coleslaw" recipe for my abundance of cabbage! It's basically coleslaw (salt, sugar and vinegar) without the mayo/mustard etc, which I add when I go to eat it. Just like tomatoes and tomato sauces, you can water bath can it, which is easy with just a deep pot, as opposed to pressure canning. Looking forward to the spring/summer season with you guys!💕

Portugal is small but has several climates because its territory stretches North-South, not West-East. In other parts of the country you wouldn't suffer so much with the heat. Castelo Branco area where you're is one of the hottest if not the hottest. Think about a small pool to bathe in Summer, like your friends Ken and Gina did.

You might want to look into lining your kitchen door and glass windows with "reflectix" (the silver, "spongy" thing, kind of like a thick bubble wrap) during the summer, for insulation; big doors and glass windows let in a lot of heat.... Not pretty to look at but definitely help. Maybe even over or under the roof.....

I'm glad you love our Country, you doing the right things, by getting on with the neighbours, it makes things much easier, where I come from, Madeira Island, a sign that you've been accepted, is the moment the locals invite you to their homes, eating out, birthday parties, etc. As for buying a car, personally, I thing getting a good motor Portuguese registered, is the best option, as you said, registering cars in Portugal is mad, tax man is the devil in disguise.

Tea (Camellia sinensis) comes from a humid subtropical climate and will probably struggle through the interior Portuguese summer. The largest tea plantation in Europe is probably the one in the Azores, where the climate is much more moderate and humid year-round. They've been operating since 1883. There is also a tea plantation in NW Portugal, and other, newer ones in Europe, all in more humid, cooler areas than where you are. As an alternative, you can try growing yerba mate (Ilex paraguaiensis), which is from interior southern South America, and tolerates much hotter conditions than regular tea, although reportedly requires high rainfall. Perhaps if you have an area where the soil stays moist in summer. Also, it is said to be grown in the shade of trees.

The only comfortable places in July and August, in that region, are: an air-conditioned room/house; a lake, river or creek (or a plunge pool just filled from a well) or with your hair soaking wet all the time, better even, right under a fountain... or... you might also try resting under the shade of trees right beside a creek. Also, a wet scarf around your neck might help, depending on the material...

I’m just back from a few days visiting Lisbon. Lovely trip but I was surprised how expensive it was to eat out. I appreciated it’s a capital city and likely much more expensive than rural areas of the country. What’s the cost of a main meal plus wine in your area roughly? We spent €80-100 for two on average in Lisbon - including street food cafes for tapas.

Thoroughly enjoyed your vlog but my question would have been on how did you meet Nick, Andrea, Bee & Theo and of course Ken & Gina? Was it through RU-vid or some other way.

We met Ken and Gina first after Ken got in touch to create a logo for them, they then introduced us to the others.

Good Q&A. I was curious if you had considered a more mountainous region of Portugal a little further north?

We’re actually only a short drive from the Serra da Gardunha and a slightly longer drive to the Serra da Estrella which is the highest point in mainland Portugal - we definitely miss the mountains, and the sea!

Quincys make the most delicious marmelade, though they use a lot of sugar for it. Actually, the word marmelade comes from the Portuguese word for quincy, "marmelo". Never try to eat raw quincy, you can actually choke and suffocate.

Yes, quinces are amazing. You can also stew them and eat them with custard. I think it's really the tastiest jelly ever.

Totally makes sense regarding your fav season(s). Mine is Monsoon Season. The air is so fresh and beautiful after our smokey season with horrid air quality. I love that it downpours for 15-30 minutes a day and then the sun is out again. Second fav season here (Thailand) is the shoulder season (Monsoon moving into Cold Season). We love those cooler days (in the 30s celsius daily) insead of the high 38-44c we experience in the hot (smokey) season. *I love how excited you both said hi ... a huge hi back - Parz thought I was online live with you two when he heard you LOL*

☺️☺️ always excited to say hi to you! Ahh monsoon season sounds heavenly, nothing more delicious than a huge downpour followed by sunshine. When in the year are these two seasons and how long do they last?

Think you might make marmalade from your quince? And maybe jam or butter from persimmons? Saw folks on channels up Coimbra way who adore putting such things in their porridge which sounds so yummo. Some 35+ i once enjoyed a persimmon custard and have yearned for it ever since 😋😄.

You can even stew the quinces and make a kind of sweet porridge to eat with custard.

We made some quince jam last year when Iwan’s mum visited - it was delicious. We’ll definitely try and experiment more with it next autumn

Wonderful video! Also wondering about crossing borders with your pets. Was there any permitting that you needed to do to bring "sausage" from the UK to Portugal (and all the countries in between)? Like proof of rabies etc. vaccine? Thanks!

If you are interested in growing more fig bushers the you tube channel The Wildlanders he showed in their last episode of growing them from cuttings. Would it be worth you getting a pull along truck to transport heavy items across your land , one like Cindy has.
