I love watching your animals and gardens and projects. A suggestion, for the hen house is you could plant a grape vine beside it, so it gets the sunshine in winter to warm the blocks , but shades the building and the chicken run in summer? They grow so quickly, and the leaves are edible. 🐔🐓🌿
The cat that sat atop the chicken gate is the most tiger- or wildcat-looking domestic cat I can remember seeing. Strong hunting instincts in that one I bet. Weather looks absolutely summery by most temperate-climate standards -- and it's still early spring -- many will be jealous ;-) ... still cooler along the coast I expect: your reward for enduring the chillier winters.
I’ve watched you from nearly the beginning, and I’ve noticed how much more confident you have become in gardening, caring for the trees and vines, and your flock. It’s a joy to see! Thank you for sharing your days with us.
My daughter in law had the same problem with a visiting hedgehog at night . Little annie would just bark and bark, so they bought a little hedgehog igloo so it could escape her shouting . Put it in the place where she always went to at night ,under a tree , it did work for them .
Hazel ☘️ … Loving Frankie’s haircut ! The chicken coup is great … master builders indeed keeping it rustic looking … 😂 I can feel your excitement as you move into another season of planting … I wish you every success … your gardening techniques thus far are helping us all understand the highs and lows of Portuguese growing .. Hope you get a bumper grape harvest and looking forward to buying some of your wine in the not too distant future ! 🙏☘️😘
Maybe Dioggo gets exasperated speaking to Hedgie at normal and raises his voice in his enthusiasm to get Hedgie to join everyone indoors for the night? Such a thoughtful doggo🐕. Frankie is stunning with her warm season furstyle❣ Great to see Iwan looking pain free and agile as ever.
Not sure why today your kitties made me think of ice cream flavors: Albi - marshmallow butterscotch João - black sesame Simeõ - coffee choco straciatella
Frankie looks fantastic with short hair !! Loved seeing the hedgehog. Brought me back to a wonderful time I spent sprawled on the grass next to one in the hills of Tuscany. It had been ready to cross the lane when a troop of my fellow tourists passed in front. Fortunately, I was lagging behind and spotted it.
Your blockwork for the chickens will be fine. It's just one of those skills you have to just jump in and do and then it gets easier after a few attempts.
I hope for most abundant crop of grapes this year for you. And you can manage it all. That is going to be a lot of grapes to fill up the new tank. Frankie is a new guy. Hedgehogs? wow I didn't know they lived in such hot climate.
Your pear tree may need another nearby to bloom at the same time I order to produce fruit. It depends on the variety I think which is hard to tell with an older tree. Allie may be a bit eggbound if she has not layed an egg in a few days. That would make her much less apt to move around. Hopefully she will lay an egg soon!
When I make jam I put all the glass jars in my oven on a little more than 100 degrees for an hour, I take them out hot and put hot jam in them and put the lid on directly, but if you let the bottles cool down a little before you put the wine in them I think it will be ok. If you leave them in the oven to cool they are at least in a sterile environment. Good luck ! ❤
Sterilising bottles. 2 ways are either wash them and then place them in the oven, low - medium heat or if you have a dishwasher you can wash them first then place them, upside down in the dishwasher and the heat, during the wash, will sterilise them. The insides won't get washed in the dishwasher, due to the narrow bottle neck.
Other options are hydrogen peroxide, diluted household bleach or even salt with some water. These need to be rinsed out or they will affect the wine, possibly badly. Sulphites dissolved in water are traditionally used because they can be drip-drained out without rinsing (a small amount of sulphite may remain, which is an issue for some people).
@@moonhunter9993 sterilizing with heat is for sure the cleanest way to go, but can also be time-consuming and there is a risk of glass cracking if not careful. A tiny amount of residue from sulphites or hydrogen peroxide shouldn't be an issue for fermentation (using sulphites is standard for home wine making & it doesn't need to be rinsed, just "drip drained"). Dilute bleach is probably the most iffy, but people do use it to sterilize baby bottles. There are pros & cons to different approaches.
A few suggestions, my grandmother thought me that when getting a plant starter, always put it in an amber/brown color because it helps the roots develop in the dark as if it was in dirt. I f you do not have such a jar, put the jar inside a brown paper bag. Also, you probably know this, fruit trees need a lot of water to produce fruit. My friend planted a few fruit trees and she picked the flowers the first three years and now they are amazing productive.... A hairy slug...!!! Hahahaha!! And I love the two cats bloomers walking next to each other!! Lichen reminds me of faerie hair!!!
One way I use to sterilize my wine bottles was to use a microwave. Wash and rinse the bottle thoroughly before sterilization. Wet the glass bottles and cook on high for 60 seconds in microwave. Allow the bottles to dry on a clean towel. Once dry let cool and fill and seal immediately. Prior to microwave technology I remember my father using the house oven at about 200 degrees Celsius for around 8-10 minutes. Make sure you have a clear and safe place to put them use good gloves and take your time. Love the vlogs and it looks like Frankie is ready for the warmer months. Best wishes from Sydney Australia.
Microwaving sounds adequate, as they have AC electricity available. Nice trick as well; as microwaves heat the water and not the glass, wetting them will concentrate all the ~900 W radiation in a thin film, just where the bottle should be sterilized. Without AC electricity, using a pressure cooker or (even better) pressure canner should also work, using just the minimum required water in the bottom to produce the steam for sterilizing. The advantage is, probably, that you can leave this to cool down and use at convenience. With 3-4 such pressure cookers around, one could create batches of 15-20 bottles for filling. (Never tried this, though. But since pressure canners are basically working like an autoclave, I expect at least pressure canners to work for this.)
Ah Frankie looks so different and very smart, so sweet. Does she like to free of the fur. My Bishon use to act like a pup when he had his fun cut. It makes them feel so much better. Bit like when we have a hair cut. 😊
I used to have chickens 20 of them and ducks perhaps the chook is egg bound if she hasn’t laid for a few days, in the past I had to pull out an egg from the egg vent on one of my chooks after that she was grand x
Try electro culture for your garden/trees, fruits, veg etc; a stable piece of copper wire, twist it into upside down cone shape (wide bottom up to single tip point with pointed bottom to connect with ground/roots) and stick it into ground near roots. Apparently they grow faster, healthier & bigger by pulling energy from the Aether.
Love the video my Frankie fix was fantastic I love her sooo much she look beautiful without her long fur as you can see I love dachshunds heaps chickens will sort themselves out always a pecking order tomatoes will root better now strong plants good yield keep the leaves from touching the earth as it causes disease stack when needed we attached cords to ours made them climb up great harvest of truss this year till next time greetings from Australia
Frankie looks very pretty. Great idea to get more chickens. I'm always impressed how well your animals all get along. BTW if you had womens 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve t-shirts I'd be interested in ordering one. I like your flowered pants, and I know how hard it is getting pants that fit for tall gals since I'm 5'10"
Currently binge watching my way through your channel after being sent here by camp out west. After seeing the Hedgehog I really wanted to share our hedgehog story with you as thought you may find it amusing. A few years back we were cleaning our sons room (he is severely non verbal autistic) and went to pick up his sheet he had yet again stripped off his bed and chucked in the corner only to find curled up in it a Hedgehog 😮 we have no idea when it snuck in the house or how he wasn't spotted climbing the stairs 😂 We were worried he was injured but when we contacted local hedgehog society they were no help 🤦 so we got a box and a blanket a little bit of dog food and water (research on internet for that) then waited till the early hours of the morning to release it. Every year after that for a few years every season we would get a hedgehog (we think the same one) coming around our house and caught it trying to get upstairs 😅😂 sadly hasn't been around the last couple of years but we did enjoy its visits 🤣🤣
Ohh I loved this!! Can just imagine them sneaking up the stairs looking for a cosy bed to snuggle up into 😆 they’re one of my favourite animals. I remember we were staying in an Airbnb in France and spotted one rustling in the leaves. We told the owner we’d spotted him and he said “oh yes Harrison”, we assumed that he’d named the garden hedge hog but turns out the French for hedgehog is “hérisson” 😆 now we call all hedgehogs Harrison 🦔
Very beautiful, gorgeous your farm is becoming and yes, those mops are very bad dudes..they take away the trees power to flowering and it’s power ...so good your are clearing them out, with some special things you can restore their strength🤗💯
Hi guys Your bricklaying is far from perfect but I love it. I call you the Nike couple, you “JUST DO IT”, I love your channel and your attitude to try anything. Cheers from Perth Australia
Sodium metabisulfite, should do it. I do my bottle in batches and there is nothing to stop you making a gallon up and filling several. Leaving for an hour and then shake and empty back for the next bottles. Then boil some water and use that to rinse, hot or cold. I prefer to fill a 25l bin and submerge in the metabisulfite so the outside is sterile too.
As always, your videos are very enjoyable. All the animals are sweet and seem to be content and happy. You both are wonderful farmers. Take care and look forward to the next time. Janice from Arkansas USA
Hi just a heads up I would use 1/4 inch hardware cloth not chicken wire. Chicken wire is not predator proof. Anything 1/2 inch or larger needs to be covered with hardware cloth. Also you will probably need to bury hardware under the door as some predators dig. Good luck.
you know guys I made a really bad assumption when I first saw your videos at the start and commented that I thought you were these you tubers who just wanted to swan around showing off your bodies .Let me now Apologise to you both and say HOW WRONG I WAS .You guys are the nicest, most hard working, humble couple .and I so wish you all the best .I have now learned that I should never judge the book by its cover .
I have a similar dog to sausage yet when he gets clipped in the summer they do leave the feathers (Hair( on his tail. Yes shorter but there still is hair on his tail so it doesnt look like a rats tail. I doubt you will ever move your bedroom to the small stone house if you keep on filling it with wine paraphanalia
perhaps you could try the setrilisation products they use for baby bottles...once you wash them out thoroughly you let them soak in the solution to sterilise them
The land is looking lovely, you've been maintaining it really well by trimming all the vines. Everything (including vegetables and flowers) is well established, and looks really nice. Well done on your new chicken coup, you've done a lovely job so far and should be very proud of yourselves! It's all a learning curve, and you are getting there, so 10 out of 10 for effort! ;)👏❤️🙂
Having owned a few chicken coups, the high-up ventilation works well to get rid of the heat in the summer. I must admit that I thought that I&C's design needs near permanently open eaves under the roof, except perhaps in the winter frosts. Will the air brick be enough for Portugal, even with a mesh door? I think it will - no heat will collect, over and above ambient temperatures, because the door reaches to the top of the structure.
We’re toying with adding insulation to the outside south facing wall to try and keep the temps down.. this will be a lot better than their previous coop and they were fine in that so fingers crossed
I heard the old tale about beating your fruit and nut trees in spring to produce a bigger harvest. We have a row of 8 walnut trees which have not been very productive over the last few years. I whacked each tree for 2 minutes this Spring, now it’s Autumn and I’m collecting a bucketful of walnuts a day. My fruit trees are only 2 years old, but I might give that a go next year.
@@moonhunter9993 just my theory, but I feel it’s like it might be a some sort of self preservation thing whereby it feels the need to reproduce itself from a possible disaster. As an example, I live in NZ and during our Christchurch earthquake, or pond filled with liquefaction which is like a dark grey heavy Sandy soil, we thought for sure all our goldfish would be dead and unable to breathe through their gills, yet as we cleared it out and ran water through the pond, that year, we had more baby goldfish than we’d ever had before, also like they felt the need to reproduce so they didn’t become extinct. Who knows, nature is a weird and wonderful thing, perhaps there is a biologist or botanist who can explain this strange reaction, I’d love to know too😁🤔
I'm not sure so perhaps ask Nick but the block with holes in you showed us for ventilation is big enough for mice....I'm wondering if mice eat the eggs chickens have just layed ??
Hi hello there , I just wanted to let you know , that you could give your tomato plants a little more change to stabilise and be stronger by putting them even dipper down as all the hair on the stems are future roots , you can take off more leaves and put the compost up to the head , leaving out only the little last few leaves you wouldn't believe , how much stronger your tomato will grow and develop biggest stems to support all your plentiful crops. Take care to yourself and all the family members!
Frankie looks super smooth and cute with her new haircut. Like a proper German sausage. Looking forward to see it growing longer again and see the different "stages" of her haircut 🤣
Are you sure that the coop is going to be big enough because it looks really small? It was lovely to see the hedgehog and hear the cuckoo but I wasnt too keen on that giant bee. Frankie looked more comfortable after her haircut but I shall miss her hairy hobbit toes.
Maybe with some gloves, pet the hedgehog and show him it's ok, don't know much about them here in Canada! Love the music you pick for your videos, very relaxing!
Frankie looked great after her haircut! Maybe a little podgy, too. You are continuing to name your menagerie with androgenous or male names ... do you have any definitely female-named pets? If you get chicks from Nick & Andrea @ Project Portugal, hinted at recently, you will have to find a VERY feminine chicken name or two to balance things - like Daisy or Aphrodite, or pick a Welsh goddess; Ceridwen - Ceri for short?
