I'm sharing the books that disappointed me most in 2019. A few of these were legit books I didn't care for, but most I enjoyed but was disappointed in some way by the book. I have full reviews of every book featured in the wrap-up links below, if you want to hear more. In almost every case I talked in detail/at length about these.

Since you said you liked the snowed in trope - I haven't read it but heard good things about No Exit by Taylor Adams. It's about a group of people are snowed in at a rest stop and then thriller plot sets in

Every book with an audience is bound to disappoint someone, no matter how good or commercially appealing it might be. As long as you can't cope with that, it really is better not to publish yet.
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 4 года назад
It's definitely very scary putting yourself out there, but it's also one of the things you have to get used to if you decide to be a published writer. I've come a long way over the years, myself! It has of course hurt me every time someone has 1-starred my book or ranted about it on Instagram or whatever, but I also know that I don't get any of the good stuff--people connecting to my work, etc.--without the risk of the bad. I just don't go purposefully seeking anything negative about my work and that helps a ton! That said, I totally get if someone is disappointed with my book (honestly there's a 50/50 chance of a Jane Eyre or Persuasion fan being disappointed in my books) and don't think disappointment always means someone hated something? As with here, you can be disappointed and still like a book. I actually have a video posting next week that's a pep talk on rejection, which includes feeling tacitly rejected by reviews. Hope it helps!
@aisha270

Thank you, Alexa! It's kinda comforting to know that even you have had a 1-starred rating ... Just kidding! But seriously, thank you for the pep talk.

Most importantly, I want to say I think your reviews are vivid and interesting and I really appreciate them! I also noticed that you used the term "POV" when I think you mean perspective. In particular, when reviewing Good Girls Lie, you refer to the Dean's or teen's or officer's POV. My understanding is that POV can only be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (with some variations of these three), and so instead of saying the Dean's POV it would be correct to say the Dean's perspective-the entire book is written in the 3rd POV and some of the book is written from the teenager's perspective while other parts are from the Dean's or officer's perspectives. Keep up the great work!

I'm really glad to have seen this list before Christmas. As always, you're wonderful. I think the only book on the list I might end up reading is "The Woman in the Window" since the movie is coming out with Amy Addams in it. And I'm a big fan of Amy Adams, but I am not sure if I'm going to be a fan of the book or the movie, unless the movie does some changes to the book. I am certainly not a fan of the author, not after reading articles about his series of lies.

I often become disappointed in any book, TV series or movie that adds race, gender identity, age etc. into the work as if ticking off a check list. Two women kiss-check. Two men hold hands-check. Black person, Asian person, Middle East-check. It doesn't fit into the plot, it's just there like an afterthought. And it's blatant and often more insulting than if they'd left it out.
@dsaillant811

My most disappointing read by far was Priory of the Orange Tree. For a book with so much interesting lore and a really cool story, it seems like the author took every single opportunity possible to keep us from seeing any of the fun stuff on the page. There's a character who is a literal warrior who rides on a dragon, and she's separated from the dragon for pretty much the entire book. WHY? Why would you give us a badass dragon rider and take away her dragon for 900 pages?

It seems that the books that you dislike the most are the ones where a character(s) has some political or social idea which you find distasteful. Do you feel that you need to find characters with whom you agree in order to enjoy a book? Or perhaps do you feel that the characters necessarily reflect the position of the author, and what you find distasteful is the feeling that you are supporting someone's work who you would dislike in person? As an author yourself do you find it unacceptable to write characters with whom you disagree or would dislike? Would you fear that they are a reflection upon yourself? I hope that this is coming across in a sincere spirit of inquiry. I haven't read any of these books myself, so have no opinion of them or the authors.

I understand that this is in neutral spirit, but I find that this comment reflects a gross common misinterpretation of literary criticism- Donne even acknowledges this in the video. She takes no issue with problematic behavior being represented as a negative in a piece, but takes issue when said behavior is presented as neutral or valid. Donne evidently isn't opposed to any character with distasteful behavior, because, if she was, she would have no protagonists in her books and therefore would never have been published. If a male character rapes his wife and the relationship as a whole is described romantically, as if there is no issue, and the piece is clearly not indicating that the wife is brainwashed and the entire situation is treated as if it is acceptable and that rape is normal (when the piece does not take place in a rape-favourable universe), then it is reasonable to reach the conclusion that the other does not find rape an issue when two people are in a relationship... dumbass.

Thanks for the heads up about the transphobia in Dear Wife! Unfortunately, this is why my reaction is usually nervousness/discomfort when I hear a cis author has included a trans character. Not because it can't or shouldn't be done, but it's usually a punch line to a joke, something the audience is clearly supposed to be disgusted by, and/or a character that has no other traits aside from being LGBT. I'm hoping to change this by writing an adult fiction novel with a trans protagonist someday.
@purpleghost106

Yes. Then there's the horrible nonsense of encountering random transphobia that you weren't even prepared for. I threw 'Ready Player One' against the wall and almost didn't finish it at all-- coming across that one particular line was extremely unpleasant. >:( It wasn't a good book in general, but I lean completionism.

Should biographies even be considered disappointing? How do you read about a part of a persons life and think "This could have been better?"?
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 4 года назад
A person always makes editorial decisions in a memoir. What to include, and how you write it. If you use your logic, all memoirs must be perfect by default because they reflect someone's life. I think it's fair to evaluate the expression of an idea-that is the foundation of all media criticism.

Uh, I liked 80% of it and gave it 4 stars? It's well-written. But. The characterization is thin. I stand by that. Sounds like you've watched my spoiler review, so you know why. You're welcome to disagree, but my reasons are well-founded. Human psychology and organic response is VERY important to me as a reader and I feel he did it poorly. That's my subjective opinion. I'm gonna say this with all due respect. This is about your dear wife review. I think it's not your place to write a publisher / author and ask them to "fix" their book to your liking. Sometimes characters in books are racist, or don't like fat people or Republicans or cats...etc. So what. That doesn't mean there's something wrong with the book that needs to be "fixed". I can understand you warning transpeople about the book but demanding the the book be "fixed" is not your place. Your examples of racism in the book ard just you being too sensitive and same goes for fat phobia. Some characters may not like fat people. So what. I'm black and sometimes I read books with characters who don't like blacks. I would never write the author and say "fix" your book. I agree that the transgender reveal serves no purpose for the plot but the character's reaction to realizing someone is trans is realistic. It can be shocking for person when they see a woman that obviously was born a man. You can't sanitize the world to make it so nobody ever experiences anything that makes them unfortable and you don't need to.
