@@ceretomer5987 the embarrassment is, he’s the team leader and doesn’t know the rule. That’s what you should be irked about. But go ahead and hate the rule instead. That makes sense.
I was at the event and believe me the pressure the players were under must have been unbearable,JJ is human and all humans make mistakes, hats off to both teams they put on a great show, roll on vegas
@@stevesmith7843 if you watched a later match in the event, Europe asked for the cue ball yo be cleaned and the ref stopped the clock.... so, don't know what you're getting at here. They were biased.
@@bradleyburton2664 possibly. haven't seen that match, the rules should obviously be applied equally. did they ask for their extension? or after this incident was there a re writing of the rule for future clarification?
@@bradleyburton2664 the ref explained what happened. initially when a ball gets cleaned, it was before a shot is about to be made. Jeremy made the mistake of wasting a lot of time thinking, going down on the shot, stopping and requesting the ball to be cleaned with 12 seconds left. it was the lack of concentration on Jeremy's part. even the ref was rushing to clean the ball knowing the time hasn't stopped and Jeremy still didn't get the memo.
he even quited down the crowd on the last 9, as if he’s just rushing to get this rack done to go comfort jj. I love how the whole eu team was there for jj, such an emotional moment in cue sports ✊
Feel for JJ too what a game of Pool. Not the way Europe wanted to win at all. Hollow victory tbf I admit and I'm sure the US will bounce back from this in Vegas. Good luck to both teams! Stay strong and stay safe!
He’s a world class player and US Open Champion and a class act. We grew up hitting balls in the same hometown. Has always had tremendous heart and talent.
@@brandyharding7692 same here. Played many a game with Jeremy and lost quite a few dollars to him over the years. Slick Willie's on Westheimer, Bogey's, etc. Stand up guy and super talented pool player. Even better at One Pocket!
It’s not just about how he lose the game, I see a very respectable man approached by his European rivals. It’s hard to earn such respect. If it’s Earls I am 100% sure none from that end will show remorse.
he wanted more time to think about the shot so he asked for the ball to be cleaned, thinking it would buy him time to think. Seems like a good rule to me that the clock doesnt stop for that.
Jones has been awesome so far. Couldn't ask anymore from the guy. He was takin world class players to the max on one of the grandest stages. Good for him, and he should get the MVP regardless of what happens.
It was a pity it ended like that because the shot he had left was an interesting one. I think he was halfway between thinking about dropping it in and leaving a cut for his next shot or trying to hit it harder and use the bottom cushion (avoiding corner bags). Being out of competitive play for a while, it can happen that your mind goes back to what rules might have been in the past. Especially under pressure and with a noisy crowd. A shame for him and his team as he showed great heart in the match.
@@jakestatefarm712 it gives the US a slightly better chance, but it's still be a big ask. The Europe team has all world class players while the USA has svb and Woodward that are considered world class. But anything can happen race to 5 with a hand rack
I love SVB, I just wished he'd perform better. Lost all but 1 point. A player of his caliber should be LEADING these guys, not LEANING on them. And part of it is that Shane is a solo player. This team concept is obvisouly foreign to him. He doesn't have the team aspect in him, I don't think.
Amazing rack and an amazing match overall. Shame to end that way. Have watched a lot of JJ but this rack in particular turned me into a massive fan. No practice whatsoever, no competitions in a long time and still played with courage and passion. Hats off to Jeremy Jones for the match and the Europe team going to congratulate him on a great match and comfort him in an unlucky ending.
Amazing rack .. Hats off to JJ for the game he bought out today .. Respect to Alcaide and the European Team for walking up to show their respect to JJ for his performance. Last minute playing captain. End the last day with a blast JJ.
I have read a lot of comments on this. Here is my take as a player myself. All players, Especially the Captain should know and understand the rules. The Referee is only there to enforce the rules and call fouls that he observes. The Referee is not there to tell you that you are about to violate a rule or create a foul. This is a major tournament with world class players. That all being said, I think Jeremy Jones really showed a lot of class and spirit during this match. I also think that the gestures from the European team speak volumes to their respect and admiration for Jeremy. We all make mistakes and sometimes it costs us a victory. I want to thank all of the players for bringing us another year of excitement ! I live 361 days a year to see this tournament. It is by far my favorite event and this year has been a great roller coaster all the way ! Stay safe and good luck to all !
@@stuartphillips822 hah … I work a regular job, shoot on leagues Monday and Wednesday and DJ Friday and Saturday nights … I’m out more than a pecker on prom night ! Cheers and stay safe !
This is why I love this game. I have a whole other level of respect for Jeremy Jones after this. Probably the best match of the year...... Anywhere. Talk about digging deep. He did it in spades.
Before the end of the match I figured Shaw would, and I was excited about that. Hard to be a player and a coach at the same time. Just a sign of respect for such a hard fought and entertaining match. But Jeremy didn’t seem too pleased with what they said so my appreciation went down a bit…
I'm sure Karl is pretty good friends with JJ. They comment together often in the same booth so I'm not that surprised. Plus JJ is a commentator for most of the Eurorpean player matches and he always talks so well of them
Nice one dude, let's all bash for not the refs not knowing the rules ourselves now, will we? Miss me with this disrespectful shit. Try and be a ref, the comments stuff like this.
I know next to nothing about American pool, but I'll make 2 observations : 1 The ref cleaned that ball in record time ( when I watched it I thought the ref had rushed it ) 2 A professional pool player ( especially a veteran ) should be familiar with the rules of the game.
Agreed. I was very disappointed. I couldn't understand WHY would he even asked to have the cue ball cleaned when they have been playing with it like that the entire match and for him to think that the clock would stop in my opinion is rediculous. I'm not a professional pool player but common sense tells me that it won't, SPECIALLY when you are hearing the beeping of the clock on its final seconds. He could have yield EXTENSION but he thought he was Royal or something special that the clock would stop for him.🙄 Honestly it wouldn't made a difference the Europeans were playing a lot better.
@@lokekennee8850 For some reason he thought that if he asked to get the cue ball cleaned the clock would stop, even tho you can hear the last few seconds letting you know the time is about to expire. I was like wtf! Why was it so important for the cue ball to be clean and ☝🏽 why didn't he called extension when the clock was beeping?😳 Them boys in Europe are no joke and if our boys are going to play like this they shoul not go at all. This was embarrassing in my opinion. He is the captain for goodness sake!😳
@@MrElPoderozo1 I just saw, at that point he already used his extension for the last match, so he couldn’t have afforded to ask that, ya it wasn’t the smartest decision but still I feel sad for him tho.
The referee did what he could do to save some time for the shot. I don’t think he should warn the player about the shot clock cause is fair to the both players. JJ played awesome as a retired player. It was definitely a great match. GG, JJ
Best example of a 9 ball chess match I've seen in years. Perhaps ever because its the Mosconi Cup. As far as I'm concerned, no loser in this match, only winners.
I like how my man here thought if anyone needed to tie his shoes, have his his cue-ball cleaned, change underpants or go buy some candy they would have to stop the clock.
This was such a sad moment for USA. Jeremy worked hard to take that match to hill-hill. But the fact that the Europe team went to console Jeremy after such a tough mistake, was very classy. I love great sportsmanship. Beating the Europeans is no joke. They have like 5 to 10 champions to our one, it’s crazy!!
There's no way JJ doesn't know about the rules. He has been Playing Mosconi 7 times and also several times as USA captain. And i'm sure he's watching thousand matches with shot clock rules too. Total drama.
JJ should've known the rules, no question about that. However, by the time the ref finished cleaning the cueball and left the table, only 3 seconds were left on the clock. No one can approach a table and make a shot in 3 seconds. The referee knew that honoring JJ's request would imminently result in a foul. For this reason I believe the referee should have denied the request to clean the cueball.
The referee isn't there to make sure what's best for you. His job is to enforce the rules of the game. Thus any player who requests to clean the ball he must do it. THAT"S HIS JOB.
If that were so, the referee should've also told Kaci that he was going to make a second consecutive shot in the doubles match... It's a shame, but the ref is only there to enforce the rules as they are.
@@yanf3949 rubbish so the other day are you saying that the ref should have warned team Europe that the wrong player was about to take the shot? He is there to enforce the rules nothing else. It’s the players right to have the cue ball cleaned at anytime and the ref should honour the players wish if the request is in the letter of the rules.
@@Dean256 Not saying that at all. Do you see a difference between referee simply observing and calling a foul and him taking an action that would imminently result in a foul?
Evem if he thought the shot clock stopped he was in no way ready to shoot,, He asked for the white to be cleaned with 12 sec remaining, The ref cleaned the ball and replaced it with 4 sec left, So it took 8 secs, Jones still hadn't even approached the table to play the shot when the time expired, There was simply no way he was going to get a good stroke on that ball if he rushed it, To approach the table, line up the shot and execute the shot in 8 secs simply wasn't happening .
JJ should know the rules as captain. He asked for the cue ball to be cleaned, to gain extra time to calm his nerves...a pity as this was an epic game up until that point.
He asked for the cue ball to be cleaned because it was the type of shot that could skid, not to game the time clock. Regardless, he should have known that the clock doesn’t stop for a ball cleaning.
He asked for the cue ball to be cleaned because there were chalk marks on the ball where he needed to hit it. The ball get extremely dirty with these new chalks and after a 20 min game it will be covered in chalk and the risk of a skid or something becomes very high. So that's why he asked, not because he needed more time that's ridiculous and honestly just stupid
@@fabbricatopersonareale The shot clock doesn't stop, when the cue ball is being cleaned. Stupid rule or not? Know the rules, especially as captain and representing your country.
I could personally never win like that. I would rather lose. The issue is in a team format, you can't let your teammates down, so I don't fault David. It is a difference of $15,000 per player. That's not nothing.
JJ made a huge error, that's his fault no one else's. He clearly thought he could buy some time having the ball cleaned to compose himself and it cost him dearly. I'd happily take a rack off someone who's made a clear and obvious error, it's no different to missing a pot.
@@tommystrong The referee clear saw what was going on and should have said something when he asked for the cleaning. Instead, " herp da derp foul" 'not my problem." Bad reffing all day long.
@@donovanpeterson837 it's not for the ref to explain or advise before every shot. That is down the the player themselves. And tbh it's not the refs problem, it's the players. JJ is the only person to blame, he clearly didn't know the rule.
He deserved It ..it was a big moment he got the white cleaned to compass himself more he wasn't down on the shot till 12 seconds left seeing a bit of chalk on the white gave him a way out ,,,he bottled it as they say
Poor him, JJ has a perfect match againist DA, but one small mistake changes everything 😢, nice to see Europe's player go to JJ, much respect. Good luck USA and congratulation Europe.
I really wish people would shut the hell up when players are down on shots. It has to do with more than politeness, it has to do with fairness. If I were the ref, at the first offense I'd tell them one more and they are out. On the flip side of the coin, Alcaide's conversation with JJ afterwards looked like class all the way around. What a crappy way to end such a great match, with a misunderstood rules violation. Both of them were demonstrating some world class strategy play there.

JJ came into the tournament expecting to be the guy that watches and pays attention to the overall picture and keeps track of details like shot clock rules. Ended up playing in about the highest pressure situation and performs brilliantly as a player but loses because he couldn’t be coach too.
@@donovanhaas7315 30 sec clock shot crowd noise lasts 3 secs or silences immediately. 10% advantage to the home team. This perspective brought to you from the land of the beast quake.
The ref did clean the cue-ball as quickly as possible. If they went over the rules in detail it's a senior moment for JJ but it's pretty lame to celebrate it.
@@eightyeight3594 different things. You can watch anytime when they ask for the cueball to be cleaned and the clock won't stop. When there's an outside element interrupting the game, the clock stops.
exactly.. if the ref had done anything other than quickly comply to the request he could be blamed for that.. its not the ref's job to understand what players think or may have forgotten.
It is a shame there is no sound for a period at the end... Would have been good to hear the commentators and also maybe catch something the players said to Jeremy and each other..
He did let the reveree clean the ball to saddle down. This is the rule for so you can not abuse it like he did ! And a captain is supposed to know the rules. When i know it how can he not??
They shouldn't, especially when Jones was USA's best player that day! Jones fought tooth and nail for every shot and didn't take anything for granted! It was a great effort! And it showed when everyone from the European team came at the end to comfort him!
For him to be the coach of the team, there is no excuse for that error. You may have lost the whole tournament for that. If you don’t know the rules why the hell are you coaching or team leader.
Don’t worry, there was a decade there where we liked it that way.. lol.. Made a lot of money.. Jeremy has won 10-12 pro tournaments over the years, and has about as many runner up finishes.. First guy to win both the US Open One Pocket and US Open 9-ball titles.. And I believe only Efren and Shane have accomplished that particular double, since..
Hats off to the ref who cleaned the ball as quickly as possible, that would of had triggered my mind that I was running out of time since the buzzing seconds wouldn't stop. Additionally, come on, you play for a living and eat sleep and smell pool, unlucky but JJ deserves what he got.
Agreed and all in the name of an ill-conceived shot clock rule that SHOULD have concession, at the referee's discretion, for unusual circumstances. Marvel's blissful adherence to a damn rule literally cost the loss of a hard earned frame and match. Just stupid. Marcel could have said "not time, shoot" but even that seems ridiculous. Pool will NEVER experience the recognition of snooker so long as players are forced to shoot quick. It should not be a race. It should be a game won by skill. Once again, the world of business and promotion have taken over and bastardize the true essence of the game. "We'll promote it but it will have to be our way - you will all have to shoot within a time window so yeah - one size fits all bitches" Sometimes.......just NO!
so, if players want more time they just have to ask for the ball to be cleaned? then ask for it again, as they see another dirty spot? where should be the point at which this would be considered abuse in your opinion? youre just shouting "i was over the line just a tiny bit" which is fine playing against friends, but if ref stops the clock here, we can all just pack up and go home.
I'm a fast shooter, probably faster than Earl. But unlike Earl, I don't think there should be a shot clock. No shot clock in snooker, golf, bowling, etc. JJ messed up. It's still a very disappointing way to lose. I dont mind when I'm beaten. Can't stand when it's my fault I lost.
So they call a time foul without the annoying beeping heard while players are taking a shot, at least be consistent and play the annoying beeping sound if a time foul is about to happen
First, Alcaide is a class act for how he handled the ending. I think the rule is good because players can use it as a timeout, BUT it needs to be changed to say you can't ask for a ball cleaning with under 15 seconds left in the shot clock. I can easily foresee controversy where a player accuses a ref of taking too much time cleaning the ball and intentionally running the clock out on the player. So,give the ref 8 seconds to clean the ball but must start before the 15 second mark. Otherwise, play on.
He got caught trying to circumvent the rules. He knew he didn't have an extension, so he asked for the cue ball to be cleaned believing the clock would be stopped. This would give him more time to think about his shot, just like an extension.
@@briantrip5022 I think it's an obstruction when it's a "foreign object" rather than chalk on a ball, and that is regulated in the rule book. No conspiracy against the US here IMO, just rules that all participants should know before getting into the game.
I didn't see it, but a friend of mine said that earlier, a European player asked to have the ball cleaned and they stopped the clock during the cleaning. That may have caused confusion.
He rly gonna regret that ball cleanin.. he prolly was after like " why i clean that ball when it was already perfect" its mental thing to some players clean ball before important run
