The test begins in neutral at 500 rpm. The engines are placed in gear, then cycle through in 500 rpm increments to 5000 rpm. We let the engines stabilize at each speed and look at fuel burn and wake to show the most efficient speed on the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 1095 with twin Yamaha 300 hp outboards.
We estimate Sweetest Thing weighing about 15,000 lbs, or 6,803 kg, with two people, our gear, dingy, linens and extra water on board. We have about 50 gallons, or 189 liters, of fuel on board. The wind is about 10 mph, or 16 kmh, and tide is out going about 2/3 down and behind us the whole time.
As Jeanneau owners, we have found the most efficient power to be between 4200 RPM and 4600 rpm for most loads, with a burn rate of about 1 mile per gallon (.49 liters per kilometer). Between 1800 rpm and 4000 rpm the boat is not as efficient.
