Chris C Raven said in an earlier scene that the “weak are the foundation of this country”. Armstrong throws his own line back at him, except he is *literally* part of the foundation.
Of course when the body of Raven decomposes within the concrete, it will create a weakness in the structural integrity. Even in death, Raven is the weakest part of Briggs

Man, it didn’t click the first time I saw this when I was a teenager, but this kill is brutal. Stabbing through the arm, slashing his chest open, and then essentially burying him alive in wet concrete. Olivier doesn’t mess around and I love her for it.
Wet concrete seeping into his nostrils, ears, mouth, eyeballs, etc. Good thing he had had so many Kick The Dog moments or that would have been too cruel
I love how all Olivier troops just watch her to butcher another general and continuing like nothing special had happened. "Just normal day here in the north boys"
if I know one thing about this show is to Never question the higher ups especially those that are commanding you if you value your life in Briggs army as a wise person once said “it is better to have the devil be your ally then to feel his wrath”
My favorite Olivier Armstrong moment was when a soldier showed up with a squadron and said he had orders to kill her (and seemed willing to do it), and she just said, "never mind that. I'm giving the orders now" and they all obeyed.
@@12jswilson My second favorite moment is when she puts a gun to her forehead and she's like: "We have no time for this! Make up your damn mind, now!" xD It's just beautiful
The thing about Briggs is that it's very remote and extremely isolated from all aspects of central command. If ANY of them want to last long here, they HAVE TO work together as a cohesive fighting unit. Up to this moment, Commander Armstrong had played her cards close to her chest after the Central Command brass started trying to make their move on Briggs, while the soldiers under her were starting to be skeptical of her loyalty after several men were horribly injured in the tunnels fighting off Sloth. This scene effectively showed off her true feelings about Central (absolutely despises their disgusting weakness and their callous disregard for the lives of those under their command, but can't afford to show those feelings openly just yet) and to Briggs (she still stands firmly by their side, and trusts them completely to get their jobs done properly) while also showing off her fighting capability in a 1v1.
She is the best female character in the show, and anime in general. Incredible morals, skill, and leadership abilities, literally not afraid to get her own hands dirty/bloody, leading by example for her men.
Exactly. The character comes first, then what is on the outside. So what if she's a girl, she has a no-nonsense attitude and is a pragmatic thinker, who is also *actually* loyal to her country and cares for the subordinates that reach her expectations. These are Olivier's characteristics, her personality, what makes her a character. Not bullshit like, "she's a woman, so she has to put up a tough act and be a bitch so the men can understand she means business" or whatever the fuck people that only look skin-deep will say when they see Olivier do anything. The fact that she's a *she* is secondary to her character. Out in Briggs, and in the wilderness, all that matters is survival. What will care if you're a man or a woman? In the wild, you're just meat. In the environment Briggs is in, you're a weak, hairless bear. If you can swing a sword or shoot a gun, you can fight, you can survive. Everything else comes secondary.
Her decisiveness and pragmatism is the reason why she was the only anime crush I had as an adult person. Unparalleled efficaciousness for a grounded character. 10/10, would not object to crushing again.
"And here they come...My men are capable of beating a grizzly bear in combat. How do you think your dolls will fair against them?" GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!!
For a guy who almost never watches and never liked dub, i gotta say FMA has one of the best dubs it sounds just about right and is really is not annoying at all
One thing I love about Briggs is it demonstrates something people often forget about survival of the fittest: community makes us stronger. The Briggs soldiers are fiercely loyal to each other and to General Armstrong.
@Shay Ogun That's really sad. The people from Xing were definitely some of my favorite characters, as well as Olivier and Wrath is just my absolute favorite because of his fighting style and sheer badassness.
@Shay Ogun I just finished Brotherhood, but I wanted to try the original. What do you mean by Pride being a toned down version of Wrath? Is he just Selim with swords? The differences between all the Humonculi was one of the best things in Brotherhood, imo.
This anime is perfection. I loved and anticipated each episode of FMAB. The story is consistent and its hard magic system had become a basis for fantasy writers. Also, this anime showcases women differently than most anime in terms of physical appearance, most women in anime are skinny with big boobs or just skinny (Sakura in Naruto lol), but in FMAB, you see plus-sized women. I'll have to rewatch this soon.
Many of the best written female characters in anime are all in FMAB: Olivier Mira Armstrong, Riza Hawkeye, Izumi Curtis, Lan Fan, May Chang, Winry Rockbell, Maria Ross, and Madam Christmas are all badass and complex in their own ways.
@@12jswilson I think you and the OP have probably not seen too many anime then. There are plenty of female characters that are well written. To be actually fair, most FMAB women are pretty weak in comparison to many female protagonist anime. The Twelve Kingdoms, The Garden of Sinners, are some anime with female protagonists that are far better written than what you get in FMAB. In fact, FMAB female characters are no different than what you get in One Piece in terms of character depth. They do not have much depth apart from a flimsy backstory and an attitude. Only difference is the design of the appearance. But, appearance design of a character is a different matter. If you for a military anime like even Attack on Titan, the female costumes are not that different from FMAB standards.
@@jbak2935 Yes, it’s one of my favourites as well ☺I wish they at least completed the anime too by adapting the rest of LNs. It wasn’t UFO table level for sure, but it was still great to watch. I felt the cruder art style added to the mystical and broken nature of the that world and I felt they did a decent job adapting it within the whole cour based pacing. But yea, definitely could have done better as you said.
zeroskillz90 the Tigers of Central don't stand a chance against the Bears of Fort Briggs. Survival of the Fittest is the only creed that these men follow, if their leader is taken as a hostage, these men will just consider that the leader wasn't strong enough to do what needs to be done, and keep on fighting.
@@0hvist honestly I think they wouldn't right her off as weak, but do the plan even better than before because no one, NO ONE, messes with the Briggs army especially their commander.
@@0hvist Kinda wish we got to see some of the Eastern troops beside the men of Briggs though, maybe wearing the white overcoats they had in Ishval over their uniforms, or Western & Southern troops as well.
After so long of not knowing who they can trust in their own organization and authorities, it always feels so good on every rewatch how the boys get such a powerhouse of an ally of Olivier.
@asaad khan no one asked for a list of anime characters you think are more badass than her and no one said she is the most badass anime character ever so there is nothing to prove
The General really should’ve seen this coming. He’s part of the creation of a strength based society and then is surprised when someone challenges his strength with more strength
Same! I mean she would be out of her league but as the only other character to focus on saber combat, it would have been a cool fight. Especially given their attitudes and philosophies.
Curran Frank grind up some staff into powder, add water, stir/turn for an hour until sloppy. Pour ceMANt into hole and 300 kick boss into said hole. Easy Peary no hassle
I really hated how Raven was so touchy feely with Oliver, it just reminded me of gross old men who hit on women. I was so happy when she got rid of Raven, even though I'm against killing.
Well thank you for sharing. HEY EVERYONE MOUNA3242 IS AGAINST KILLING!!! ATTENTION EVERYONE!!!! PAY ATTENTION!!!!! EVEN YOU GREG! THEY ARE *AGAINST* KILLING. NEED TO MAKE THAT VERY VERY VERY CLEAR, WHY? NO IDEA...NO IDEA WHY THAT WAS BROUGHT UP. I EAT UNICORNS AND FUCK CAKE. It is a cum cake.
Calm down guys. Dude says one thing about his moral philosophy and yall act like a bunch of assholes. It isnt even that _bad_ of a philosophy anyways, hell the main characters in this very same anime have the *same damn philosophy.* Just chill out, jeez.
her brother is an alchemist and she trounced him in a duel for head of the family. just goes to further prove that alchemy was never the deciding factor
Nah, that award goes to Mustang cremating Lust. Those few minutes of agonizing torment before a comeback and finished w/ a backhanded warning while evaporating - God tier villain send off!
@@jibekmechler139 - Lust: (paraphrasing) I await for the day when those eyes are filled w/ agony. Many episodes later, Mustang is BLINDED. Me: (Spongebob face) I see what you did there FMAB.
Honestly one of the most satisfying scenes in the entire series. He was just a side character, but Raven facilitated some of the most tense scenes in show, and he gets everything he deserves in this sequence.
This is why Olivier Armstrong is one of the badass female Anime characters of all time. And when she said about the part where Raven will literally become the foundation of the country, it was PERFECT.
I love how buccaneer, a 2 meter tall, buff, muscular military man with a prosthetic arm made of steel with the shape of the jaws of a beast, is second place in badassery at Briggs.
I actually like her dialogue in the original, because she calls him a geezer rather than a traitor as she kills him. It fits more into her character, as her philosophy is survival of the fittest, and her biggest problem with the higher ups is that they are all weak cowards who are willing to sacrifice lives without risking their own or having to get their hands dirty
Traitors *are* weak ;) But I see your point. Interesting to know. But I am also half serious that traitors lack strength in the most important areas: courage and loyalty. It takes strength to sacrifice. The weak man takes advantage of others to climb higher.
Technically, she did call him "old traitor". Which fits her as she is a general and the worst thing you can probably is a traitor to a general. Plus, it still fits with her survival of the fittest ideology by addressing him as old and even making a comment about his "moldy ass".
@@RacingSnails64 Eh, I would disagree. Greed was technically a traitor but I wouldn't consider him weak. Sometimes it takes strength to betray the false idols and ideals you've lived with your whole life in order to do something that is right.
"Which arm did smith lose in the tunnel, the left or the right?" Really shows armstrongs loyalties towards her men and her motivation for not taking the immortality.
I AM ALWAYS A SIMP FOR STEPHANIE YOUNG GETTING HER DUE RESPECT! THIS SCENE WAS SO EPIC AND SO SATISFYING AND I WOULD GIVE MY LEFT ARM TO THIS WOMAN IN A HEARTBEAT.
EVERY character is the best character in the Brotherhood series. It really feels like every character is essential tot he narrative, ans that their actions make a difference.
@@Chaosdogg47 For me Wrath was the best...not for his power...but his dilemma... like Wrath didn't knew who he was fighting for... what he is fighting for... when he was with his family he thought that his family is real...his son is real...his wife is real...he felt happy...but in the form of Wrath he just followed orders without thinking...at the end he died resulting him to be free from the dilemma... that's why he was looking so peaceful in his death...
First off, she’s one of the most powerful female anime characters I’ve ever seen. And the power this show gave to its women characters was incredible. I also love how Olivier did the arm stab thing again later
If you look at the soldiers before Raven, they seemed reluctant. But after Armstrong, strong armed Raven, they were thrilled. That is a show of respect.
@@akale2620 no? Sir is just the way you refer to your commanding officer, traditionally. They didn't say Ma'am for a General for the time this is based on, the 1920s.
@@Sassaparilla well ok. But in 1920s women weren't anywhere close to getting into these positions anyway. Also technically, it's set in Germany so what would be the German equivalent?
@@akale2620 Yes, I am aware of that, but, that's 1920s for us, not 1920s for Amestris. Many cultural focuses are inspired by our world and the technology is extremely similar to the same at the time, but there are of course differences (let us not forget Conqueror of Shamballa, lol). If I remember correctly, Herr would be the German term for Sir, as they do not actually have a proper translation. Instead, they say, "Herr (Name)". So, they would refer to her as Herr Armstrong, or by her full title as a Major General. Which is funnily enough, just "Generalmajor", which pre-1945, was the equivalent to a Brigadier General in rank.
