Join us for stroll around Scotland's most epic fortress, Dunnottar Castle!
The hauntingly romantic ruin of Dunnottar Castle is perched on an ancient rock formation formed 440million years ago in the North East Coast of Scotland.
Evidence dating from 5,000BC shows Picts had once inhabited the sea stack making it the oldest Pictish fort ever discovered. In 400AD, St Ninian arrived and converted the Picts to Christianity and three centuries later it was invaded and attacked by Viking forces.
The oldest part of the ruins is the Chapel which was built in 1276 and in 1392 the first stone castle, known as The Keep, was built at Dunottar.
The castle has been an integral part of Scotland and also England's history, with key figures such as William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and Oliver Cromwell all having visited or attacked the fortress.
The castle housed the Honours of Scotland (the crown jewels) for protection during The War of Three Kingdoms in the mid 1600s.
Dunottar is a geological, topographical, historical and cultural place of interest and a haven for landscape photographers. Be sure to check out this spectacular ruin on your next visit to Scotland!
