Do not ever apply flux directly to the tip. Yes I found out the hard way. It makes the solder not stick to the tip

I know how to solder but came here from your build series to see how you handled it. This gives me even more hope for my drone build. I love instructions from people who can explain things properly. Yeah, correct, puddles on the iron to make a joint is wasting the solder, a joint should be the wire(tinned) stuck to a thin sheet(tinned) on the pad. Thank you.

Good tutorial. I come from being a hobbiest for around 30 years. I got started with R/C trucks (RC10T primarily) when I was a kid (90's were my teenage years). Went to school for electrical engineering initially (ended up being a front end software developer), and kept up with electronics tinkering through the years. I'm not into FPV yet but I do have small drone I messed with a few years ago but it had no camera. I want to get back into the hobby, so I figured seeing the common soldering techniques in the hobby today would be useful. Running a Hakko 936 and Hakko 907 right now. The last project I worked on that involved soldering was replacing a Micro-USB port on a tablet for a friend, and yes it's working again. My list: -All you need is the brass sponge. I did away with my wet sponge years ago. -A soldering wick is also very useful for cleaning up extra solder. Heat it up and wick away the extra solder like the wire wicks the solder inside of the strands. That's a good way to clean pads up too. -The way I learned flux is that is just lets the solder flow to where it should be. I prefer the syringe method with a precise tip for applying flux. -One other thing I would caution against is having too hot of an iron on the wire for too long. It will cook away the insulation as the wire heats up enough to cook it. I'm glad you demonstrated the wicking of the solder to inside of the wire, but taking it a step further by showing the cooking of the insulation would help encourage better quality soldering.

Really great guide thanks for taking time to make it. Just to summarize (We heat the pad until solder bonds with pad, then heat the wire to bond solder with the wire, then bring them together to allow the solder on the wire to bond with the solder on the pad. But also too much heat on the pad will destroy the pad and fatally ruin the board.) Until you've over heated the pad any mistakes can still be corrected.

so you are mostly correct about adding solder to the pad, not the iron. (quick background, I now work in the circuit board industry, and found your video looking up some refresher info before i re-up my soldering certification) there is something called drag soldering where you apply the flux to your component and pads separately, add the solder directly to your iron, and basically drag it across a row of pins to solder them in to place in one motion. however, that is likely more in-depth than what you might need to do, unless you work with a large amount of integrated chips with many leads. on the flux; there is nothing wrong with using rosin based flux, you just have to clean it properly when your done. if its a water soluble, you can actually take it to a sink and clean it with warm water and a soft brush. then use some compressed air to blow the water off, or let it air dry completely before you send power through it.

What a great tutorial! Where Joshua’s points were reinforced with my first experience: 1. Practice on the boards, with wire. Practice with obstacles in your way. 2. Spend more time planing your joint, than you would making your joint. Wil your iron fit? Is it the right size? 3. Plan for only having two hands :) Also, a low battery on a battery powered iron will give you very weird results. All of my battery and esc broke off after soldering with a weak battery. This shook my confidence in my ability to solder big time. It took hours to have the joints fail :(. Bought an ac powered iron and I cruised through the soldering with ease. It’s all about the tools.
