Thank you so much for subscribing everyone! I really appreciate your support. Please let me know any thoughts or criticisms you have and I'll do my best to get back to everyone!!! I want to address some of the criticism I've been receiving on this video, including a comment that was left by Daniel's former manager - Jeff Tartakov himself! Jeff T stated below in a response to a comment that accused me of "reading the script to Devil and Daniel Johnston" that he also is of the opinion that I just ripped off the movie, and also got "half of the facts wrong". Unfortunately, he didn't list any off these factual errors in his comment, and while I'm sure he's a busy man and I don't expect him to take the time to fact check this entire video, I wish he had taken a little bit more time to flesh out his statement instead of take the time to vaguely agree with what in my opinion is one of the most baseless comments I've received on a video yet. Here's my response to the claim that I ONLY read the script to the doc or to a lesser extent plagiarized the only widely available documentary about Daniel's Life, and the claim that "half of the facts" in this video are inaccurate. Regardless of this really disappointing review of my video that I woke up this morning, I want to thank Jeff for taking the time to watch my video about my favorite musician. I wish him nothing but the best! Before I present my defense of this video I made, please understand that I never knew Daniel personally, and Jeff Tartakov not only knew him, BUT WAS HIS MANAGER. When it comes to whether or not this stuff is factual, I for one am going to believe Jeff over any of the research that I personally did. Unfortunately, he didn't list any specific errors and told me to rewatch the movie that he also vaguely accused me of ripping off, so here's what I have to say about it - Acknowledgments: I did use the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" as my primary reference for this video, as it is to my knowledge the only widely available piece of media that goes into the whole story in depth. This is standard practice in Video Essays. If I wrote an essay about "Robinson Crusoe", you wouldn't accuse me of ripping off the book. We all know that the point of the essay is to review and elaborate on the story, and in my opinion that's what I did here. My information could TOTALLY be incorrect. I am not omniscient, and I have been wrong before in my life. Refutation of Claim 1: 1. I wrote my own 16 page script in 12 pt courier new for this video. There is not a single instance of my narration that shares any resemblance to the script of the doc, other than the content of the true life historical events of Daniel's life. 2. I recorded and produced three Musical References of Daniel Johnston's Songs that are completely original, and have no resemblance to anything in the doc. These pieces make up about 5 minutes of the videos 33 minute run time 3. I sourced ALL of my own images from google images, with the only exceptions being that I had to take pictures of the doc on my computer screen to get photos of Jason Nightmare and Gimbel because there aren't any other high quality photos available. 4. I used 1 piece of sound from the doc which is a recording of Daniel describing his mental illness. This is totally within the bounds of fair use and does not constitute plagiarism. I'm not trying to be obtuse, I can understand where people are coming from with the accusation of me ripping off the doc. However, I don't understand the logic behind accusing me of ripping off the primary piece of media available about the life of Daniel Johnston, while also accusing me of getting the facts wrong. I got these facts from reputable sources that are all officially linked and controlled by Daniel J's people, that you are also accusing me of plagiarizing. Refutation of Claim 2: 1. I used three primary sources to source my information - Devil and Daniel Johnston Doc, the Wiki pages for all characters involved who have one, and Daniel's official website hihowareyoudotcom - I also used Reddit to a lesser extent to try and verify certain smaller details. 2. I hired a fact checker through Fiverr who cross-referenced every point in the video to the sources I was using. There are certain points in the video that are unverifiable, but I state clearly that these points are my opinion. I am not saying that this fact-checker is omniscient or even that they did a good job, but I simply state this to let you know I have skin in the game when it comes to making sure this video is accurate. 3. Any of the facts that I am uncertain about have to do with the relationships of various musicians and Daniel. Such as the timeline when him, Steve Shelley, and Jad Fair started getting together. Funnily enough, this is the main thing I HAD to follow the documentary closely on because it is the only place where this info seems to be available with specific information. Thanks so much for reading this giant wall of text! I truly appreciate it. After all is said and done, I'm just trying to bring the stories of my favorite musicians to as many people as possible. I will be fact checking everything in this video once again in the coming month, and I am so excited to make a part two about what I got wrong if I find it necessary! Much Love Everyone!!! As always, don't believe everything you read on the internet and do your own research!!!

I finally got around to watching this, so so cool James. I learned so much, what a fascinating dude. This was super interesting throughout. I think first and foremost one of your next videos should be about a black artist from maybe longer ago, maybe Little Richard?

This was a fantastic production. Your information was laid out beautifully with fantastic production. My only criticism is the "remixing" of 'Devil Town' should probably be notated as such as many people may not be familiar of his music and may be mislead. Overall, thank you for a lovely production, it was well enjoyed.

I can't say much about your "opinion" because it isn't one - it's a *theory* (or hypothesis or whatever the fuck...) I can see why you might get all conspiracy-nutty about that time period though, because: (1) Feuerzeig pretty much skims over that whole chunk of time because it doesn't fit his narrative. (That's not a dig at him - as a filmmaker he chose what story he wanted to tell and going more into that period would've unbalanced the structure and flow of TD&DJ.) And... (2) The other biographical sources either ignore the years immediately post-FUN as well or they flat out spew bullshit and lies about the events that took place therein. And I should know, since that is when I was most closely involved with - and am most knowledgeable about - Daniel's life and career. And, sadly, pretty much any time you read a paragraph anywhere that has my name mentioned in relation to Daniel, you're reading willfully and "totalley" untrue stories, despite a great deal of effort on my part to correct the misinformation. For instance, read the prattle in "Hi How Are You; The Life, Art & Music of Daniel Johnston" by Tarssa Yazdani, claiming that Daniel was terrified and delusional and sick at the SXSW '97 "comeback show" that I masterminded, and then watch the entire uncut show here to see and hear how joyous and excited and in control he actually was: Pt. 1 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LsbGE9xvtZY.html ; Pt. 2 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UXtfrz-6GGM.html If you wanna palaver about those "lost" years of Dan's life (and hear some of the many dozens of unreleased songs we wrote and recorded together over the years) catch up with me on my Facebook page and offer to buy me lunch or something...

Hey! Thanks so much for your comment! I think you'll find upon additional review that the part where I say that something is my opinion is right after a portion where I talk about a situation that I don't have any evidence about, so I am only speaking about it from my perspective/opinion of what I think happened between Gimbel, Atlantic, Tartakov, and Johnston. This is a video essay that I made about one of my heroes! The sole purpose of this video is to talk about the legendary story of Daniel Johnston, and the criticism I'm hearing from you is that I told the story of his life in the same way a documentary about his life did? While I welcome your criticism, I don't know exactly what your point is here. If that's the case, I've heard you and while I can't say I agree, I will certainly take it into advisement. Please feel free to elaborate in a response! I'd love to make sure that we can put up as many comments on this video as possible to get the algorithms moving and get Daniel's story out there!!!! I truly hope that you have a wonderful rest of your day. See you around!!!

@@musicwizardofficial8464 I think what he's saying is that this is a complete rip-off of Jeff Feuerzeig's award winning documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. You're retelling the story he told, using some of his footage and audio while getting about half of the facts wrong. I do appreciate the kind words and your opinion stated toward the end is fairly close to what happened (Gimbel acted very selfishly but I wouldn't say he manipulated Daniel) but I completely lost track of the number of factual errors. Please watch the documentary again and I'm sure you'll catch some of them.

@@Tartakov1 Hey Jeff!! Thanks so much for your constructive criticism!! I really appreciate your comment, and I hope that you have a wonderful rest of your week! As DanieI Johnston's manager and friend, I will be sure to take into advisement that you are telling me that there are enough factual errors in this video for you to lose count. I spent A LOT of time fact checking and comparing my notes to the available information, including the documentary of Daniel's Life that is the primary piece of media available to source this info from. I also hired a fact checker to cross reference my notes to the three primary sources I used. I didn't have access to Mr. Jeff Tartakov for fact checking, so I worked with what I had, and the above video is the result. You didn't list any of the errors, so I'll have to take your word for it. I will review the information, and I'll send you a part two if feel that its necessary. I truly love Daniel's Music, and I certainly don't want to be spreading misinformation. Once again, I hope you have a wonderful day! All the best!

@@musicwizardofficial8464 Here's one that I think is rather important. Daniel *did* use a duplicator for the tapes he handed out when he was in Austin and there were not multiple versions. He did *not* re-record each song for each tape. It's a charming myth but a false one. I know that Ken L says he did in the film but he's in error. Maybe Daniel told him that as a joke. I can't say because I don't know. But it's not true. There is only one version of Yip/Jump and each album after it. As for the ones before it... He also did not choose to replicate or re-record whole tapes/albums even when he was in WV (Songs of Pain, Don't Be Scared, The What of Whom, More Songs of Pain, and the Lost Recordings). What he *did* do, before leaving WV for TX, was to record different versions of different songs in different orders for what were essentially mixtapes for his friends and others. And they were labeled as such. And he wasn’t handing them out to strangers in WV. He wasn't thinking of them as albums then. They came from a 3.5 year-long body of work that fell under the general umbrella of 'Songs of Pain,' though pretty much each tape had a unique name with unique art. Everything pre-Yip/Jump falls into that category. It's pretty sad when people think they're buying a unique copy of Hi How Are You, for example, off of eBay or wherever, with a different performance on it, because they're only getting ripped off. There was only ever one version of HHAY. Same for Yip, same for RT, same for Respect and the many albums after. Jeff Tartakov, or anyone that knew Daniel well, in WV or Austin, can back me up on this: this is a widely-spread myth but it is a false one.

@@Jason-re9tg Apparently the relevant part of this video is currently "muted" so I'm a bit unclear on who said what when (and of whom) but regarding my role in this tale, I think if you listen again to the quote (Here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TIWgh6uABfk.html), I may have exaggerated how many times he rerecorded songs, but I can say for certain that my tapes shown in that clip ("More Songs, More Pain", "Don't Be Scarred", "Someday You're Gonna Make It Joe" etc) feature lots of unreleased songs and alternate recordings and I believe Tartakov can confirm the existence of multiple completely different versions of at least one or two of the early tapes. (My "What of Whom" OTOH was the only known recording and I'm pretty sure all copies still come from that sole "master") Then again, I do admit that due to my neurological problems I can be very fuzzy-headed at times, and Jeff Feuerzeig as a director is a true master at pulling the story he wants told out of you; I remember the first time I saw "TD&DJ" thinking at one point "What a great story! I never knew that!" and then realized it was *my* voice recounting the tale in question...)
