You're the one of the extremely few western people who is knowledgeable on how to pronounce Mandarin names and words. This simple thing easily makes you more credible and immediately sound smarter. While many ignorant ones simply 'French'-ify or Anglicise all foreign names, which is absurd.
I love how this video emphasizes how tai chi is designed not to hurt or fight your opponent but simply to defuse the situation. A lot of people keep talking about how tai chi can’t be use in combat, how it’s not as good as mma and search for tai chi vs mma fights don’t understand this philosophy. A tai chi master has no desire to fight let alone compete in a ring for money. Because if he did, he would have never became a master in the first place. Great video.
Thank you. I agree. Additionally, too few teachers understand the difference between short and long power. Or the complimentary nature of Guardian chi and Nurturing chi. In the end I believe the fighting skills of Tai Ch come down to ting jin, dong jin, hua jin, and fa jin, and to conditioning of the body and the development of the Yi. Since we train Yang style I advise my students to first pursue balance and relaxation (Sung) Keep practice, train for life. Laoshr #60 CYKFA
You are one of a very very few Lao Wai who speak Chinese in native Chinese accent. And your knowledge about China history is remarkable. Impressive. 👏👏👏
About San SanFeng there are some Western style Academic studies - and those debunk Taiji myths completely. There were many SanFeng's in Chinese history -that was/is a quite common Taoist name, some of them lived at the same time-period. They were practitioners of different Taoist approaches from alchemy to meditation and anyone of them did not create Taiji Quan as we know it today. Today is known that Taiji roots are in Emperor Taizu Boxing with later added Inner Work. That's history is quite complicated, with many obvious fakes and with interesting twists (specially reason about big differences between Chen style "Taiji" (Famous Taiji master mongol Wu TuNan who visited Chenjiagou reached in agreement with local masters that ChenJia Quan is NOT Taiji). Every century onward Chinese "knew" more and more detailed elements about San ChanFeng - when exactly he was born and died, how he looked and which were his habits - 8 centuries after his hypothetical life there was long exact descriptions about his life - very different from some vague remarks in his lifetime.
awesome video! thank you for the context and in-depth look at this figure. I really appreciate the mentioning of his written works as well as biography. Thanks!
I've been a long time practitioner of Chinese Martial Arts, in particular Shaolin/Sil Lum Boxing for over 40 year's. The style I practice is known as Jow Ga/Chau Ga or Zhou Jia Chuan. I have also authored two books on the system. The first being "The Power Of Shaolin Kung Fu". As I am new to this channel, I was wondering if you would talk a bit more about some of the more unique and not so well known styles of both Southern and Northern External Boxing styles???🤔 I look forward to following this Channel.👊👊👊
Hi Ronald, am a practitioner of Jow Gar from Singapore. Would like to thank you for writing the book that outlined the genesis of Jow Gar. It was very informative 😊
he comes back on the last condor heroes trilogy , hevenly sword and dragon sabre , these two weapon were made by guo jing. but the story revolves on zhang wuji , zhang sanfeng grandson/grand student . yang guo descedant also apeared once for cameo 😂
1 clarification, in addition to pushing, Tai Chi also has deadly strikes, but these would only be used if there is serious danger. We don’t emphasize this enough in the video, thank you to one viewer who pointed it out. I.e. its not that Tai Chi can only push people out the way! 7:04
I was going to say the same thing after seeing your video. Tai Chi also strikes, especially on pressure points, depending on your teacher. But I feel Tai Chi comes alive when you know what targets you are hitting during your form. But glad you cleared that up. All the best.
I'm not a Taoist, and I started my Taichi studies from a book by Yang Jwing Ming (also learned Xingyiquan from him, but not in depth). It was through his books that I understood the medicinal virtues of Taichi movements, like which internal organs each form massaged, to the point that I can create my own routines based on the Yang style.
Thank you for this lesson. I’ve been told that there are still martial arts practitioners living in remote parts of China who claim to be older than 150 years. I would like to meet them someday.
The West say Chinese Kung Fu flying and jumping of trees and houses are ridiculous fake but they love their Star War Jedi mind tricks and the force. 😂😂
I started playing a game called OverMortal, all about cultivating spirit energy and fighting invading Taoists. This channel popped up at the perfect time!
Well, I am suprised by your channel. I am a taijiquan (楊式太極拳) practitioner who just retook my Chinese lessons as well. Quite interesting poetry materials. I plan to reproduce a few poetries as Chinese calligraphy for my teacher. However, my scope is to practice a good quality of taijiquan for health purposes. One more time 確實謝謝你
Thanks Ben and may I add that Zhang is being immortalised by the Chinese novelist Louis Cha who is known as Jin Yung and Zhang appeared in his martial art novel title as The Heavenly Sword and Slay Sabre
Also that 200 year old martial artist made his own elixir wine that had secret herbs, ginseng ,goji berries fermented producing alcohol which doctors say today that one to two shots a day of 40 proof or more cleans the blood and over all promotes a longer life. He also practiced 8 diagram Baguazahng and this circular movement was a great addition to maintaining the bodies health. I practice it myself ... to the fact that I can feel the moon and lift my hand to show you when waves crash on a beach on a beach several miles away because I can feel the pull from the moon in my own body due to the human being .... "being" .... mostly water. Two magnetic poles in the earth ...... the human brain has electricity .... humans have iron in their blood. If a needle is charged with static and placed in a cupped leaf on water .... it will spin back and forth ..... like Baguzhang. Winding anf un winding. Don't forget that the "big bang" has still left a release of energy .... some scientists say now that the universe is expanding and contracting at the same time. now I'll get corny and funny but still be real ... " when my opponent expands I contract ... when they contract I expand " "Be water my friend" -Bruce Lee There was much more to those statements and many more than most people know.
I Have Been Studying Martial Arts Theory since 1997, thanks To Dr. Yang Jwing Ming And YMAA Publications. And Have Read Some Of These stories And Legends. And Truly Value The Information. Thanks
What a delightful video and it is precisely one of the many reasons why, when I have time, 'surf' You tube. I've discovered yet another remarkable channel on You Tube and am looking forward to exploring it. Thank you so very much ( You Tube ) for opening my eyes just a little more in the most amazing world I live on or in, uncertain which is correct.
He also wrote a book detailing the 72 levels of power which was handed down through the mo zi lineage to john chang (baharuden)from mo pai chuan, after his death it was handed down to his number one student in indonesia.

What's really great about these Taoist practices be it Qui Gong or Tai Chi is for a person who sincerely wants to do seated meditation but has a problem quieting their mind doing Qui Gong or Tai Chi helps a person increase their energy and focus which over time can enable a person to quiet their mind of thoughts effortlessly it becomes automatic. Which really helps a person to learn whatever they want to learn with incredible detail and depth of understanding.

Great research. My upmost respect for a non Chinese for the way it is presented. Every Chinese know ZhangSanFeng but is confused as to who is the real founder of TaiChi.
I just learned about your Chinese historical treatises'.. Good Job, Sir:, you have my attention and visual enthusiasm... At the moment, i dont speak Chinese, however, my Language backgroung are Japanese and Korean.. Therefore, its interesting to note the That both of these Countries utilize The Northern as well as the Southern Chinese Dialects when reading Han Moon, (Chinese Ideograms or Characters.if you exclude their indigenous way of reading Chinese.) Thus, (White Eye Brow) in the South may be refered to as Pak Mei, and or, in the North, know as Pei or in Manchurian:, (Pek Mei) hence, White Eye Brow of the Shaolin Monk and also used to describe Lao Tzu, The Author of Tao Te Ching,(Way of the Life Force) A Taoist Sage from the 3rd Century B.C."Who does not eat The Five Grains"... At any rate most of these books were Torn in Half due to the Japanese Imperial Armys' attempt to steal the The Chinese Secrets of immortality and The Secret "Mandalas or Mantras" that could be danced foot Steps (as in Kung Fu) and not merely a vocalized Chant that supposedly Opened up Portals of the Hidden Dimensions by way of syllables uttered Vocally(known in the West as Quantum Particle Physics) hence, in Chinese (FengShui or Wind and Water Concepts) which was also can be applied to Music, in terms of distance between The Notes and Timing thus, Tempo as in Thai Boxing, Etc. Therefore, in a Capsule:, even though the Japanese have come a long way with only retrieving half or slightly less and then some, of the "Chinese Books" such as:, The Secrets and Foundations of Kung Fu. However, alot still seems "Much to be Desired" as you can hypothesize from their Angular rigid interpretations of What was Chinese Martial Arts, even though they now claim it as a synthethis, with only half a book ? And many books if the Truth were known by way of Espionage and Skull Dugery, that is old as Time...
Forms are meant to build muscle memory & maintain health. Anybody with a deep understanding of tai chi would be very difficult to beat in an actual match without rules. The masters knew how to borrow power from the earth & project it outward in all directions. Whiplash from a prolerly executed technique could lead to permanent damage or even death.
Immortality has been misinterpreted for centuries. The real immortal is the one who has gone beyond mere body identification. A real Taoist is a Yogi seeking enlightenment. For those seeking to cross over the three worlds I highly recommend pursuing Raja Yoga, and/or Kundalini and Siddha Yoga, with the practice of Tai Chi Chuan. These two compliment one another in marvelous fashion! Fare well. All the best. Laoshr #60 Ching Yi Kung Fu Association
A lovely story/ myth. Sadly he never existed. There is no point having a martial art that doesn't hurt anyone and that is definitely not true of Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi is a real martial art that is very effective the biggest problem is that most people do not train it properly as a martial art because they all think it's going to work like magic and not be hard work to learn. I love these old stories and myths, but they shouldn't be taken seriously.
What I have been know about Taiji, its a martial art and not just physical and spiritual exercises. Everybody who learned Traditional Chinese Martial Art (TCMA) know, that there are two type of courses in TCMA, one for common peoples or common students (inclusive), and the other for "behind the door" student or inner student (exclusive). Its very different materials for common students and inner student, just like earth and sky, even thought its look similar but it just look similar in the wrap but not in the content. Back to taiji, the well known taiji movements mostly come from Chen Man Ching (CMC), he has re-designed taiji for sexercise purpose, and he is not an inner student. So figure it this way, he created some taiji movements from not origin movements, and made it for exercises purpose. Can you imagine how big is the deviation from the origin?? In the inner student, off course their accept Zhang Sanfeng as "one of" their ancestor, but not same Zhang Sanfeng like the myth said. Their Zhang Sanfeng, he was not the student of shaolin, and the inspired story about snake and crane, its only fairy tale. And another information, the name of Zhan Sanfeng its not belonged to one person, I believe this could answer you about the immortality.
I don’t know Tajii, but i know Hei Gung and chi kung and Zhan Zhuang and the real masters went deep into the spiritual dimension and the sea of law and learnt these secret methods.
@@joeboo1983 Zhan Zhuang (ZZ) has two different methods, one is for public, and another only for behind the door student. The ZZ for public has been modified by some many practitioners and has distinguished far away from the ZZ for behind the door student.
@@ramawijaya540 I know the more spiritual powerful postures are concealed. I was roughy a powerful moving hei gung that’s follows sitting meditation. The real deal certainly not for the public.
He learned 13 posture qi gong from a famous Taoist, poet, monk named Ma(?), and choreographed them together to create tai chi. Zhaobao village is close to Chen village, and 1 famous Chen practitioner married a Zhaobao woman, and moved to her village. Zhaobao tai chi might have some Chen tai chi influence.
I used to train old yang style taichi, and also other martial arts, more than 20 years. All I can say is this is not just good a story in this video. There really is things that someone can't get just by hard practice or having big desire, it just need something more. The missing part is cultivation. Nowadays people want only learn how to punch hard, how to hurt others, and the cultivation part they call "stories". Just like they have forgotten the buddhist or taoist origin of many martial art. You can say they only want an external part about it. I know there are students who really want to learn the hole art including the inner part, but they can't find the real master who is able to teach these inner things. All I can suggest is they read Master Li's book "Zhuan Falun", and think things in new eyes. The book is not about how to fight, but how to really cultivate your real self.
General shen from the Chinese Nationalist army that retreated to Taiwan helped to publish the book on this immortal used this man training general shen lived to 94 years of age and had 200 concubines
Many modern Chinese historians suggest that there was no such person as Zhang Sanfeng because he appears in different time periods. If you believe that Zhang Sanfeng lived for 200 years, you probably believe in the tooth fairy. Also, they trained martial arts in the Wudang temples way before the Ming period. Another myth is that Taoists (or Tai Chi) created Yin Yang and the five element theories. Historically the Taoists borrowed/ copied heavily from the Naturalists (Yin Yang Sect) and Mohism. The Taoists were some of the first to translated many of the Buddhist texts into Chinese and adopted many of their teachings. Another fun fact is that the people from Chen Village, which is down the road from the Shaolin, practiced SOFT styles from Shaolin's east court yard as well as Long Fist and Lohan. This was the origin of what some people call Tai Chi.

This is really a great example of the reason I'm studying Chinese: I want to be able to read the official compiled history and classical works. But, I know there's been a lot of assimilation to Han Chinese language and culture, how can I separate the influence of the CCP and the influence of the Han from the classical texts? Are there any preserved and accurately copied original texts remaining?
The Han are still our people. You need not disassociate. My teacher lives on the mountain and he would tell you 'whatever you see, do not reflect it's image. Reflect your wish for it' You will never understand the original text, by sidestepping the modern. So if you care about my country and it's history as you claim? Work backwards. The CCP are not all bad people as you suppose. Some of them would like a much better relationship with the west and are simply afraid. When you look at the state of the world, I hope you have some sympathy for that. Master your Mandarin. Work into your Traditional. There you will find stepping stones to the Ancient. Hun, this is NOT a short road. It's a lifetime pursuit. So there is no answer to your question but the above. There is a pretty famous quote from a little green western character in a movie, than I am sure you will recognize. 'You must unlearn, what you have learned'. If you truly seek. You will find! NO shortcuts.
"The CCP are not all bad people as you suppose. Some of them would like a much better relationship with the west and are simply afraid." There is nothing more the West would like to see than a weak and chaotic China. Preferably divided into many mini states. Why? Because a strong and united China is a thorn in their side. The West, primarily the US and her allies, want to continue their global domination and they see the way to do is to keep down any country that can threaten their position. So no, wanting a better relationship with the West doesn't automatically make any leader of a country a good leader. Standing up for the interests of their country against Western domination is what makes a good leader
LMAO😂🤣😂🤣😂 How to separate Han influence from classical Chinese texts? Which people and culture do you think produced those compiled histories and classical works? It's like saying, "oh I want to study classical English philosophical works but how to weed out the influence of the evil English people and the British Labor Party from those works?"
Your ignorant projection doesn’t speak for a vast amount of Chinese. I always laugh because you’re forcing western talking points on us and acting like it’s our culture. Which is practically the whole ‘racist appropriation’ dialogue. I have zero interest in it. I have very little tolerance for western politics which …isn’t even really that anymore. So feel free to take the contrived bigotry elsewhere and leave us alone.
Is tai chi just a slow movements of hands and legs in a pattern? How can this prompts health? Can't we also design our own pattern? I am layman to Tai chi. Please Help me
