Timeline history of the most viewed TV series from 1986 to 2019. Ranking is based on the following factors: prime-time first 24 hours audience reports, one week of reported statistics for downloaded copies (pirated), one week of streaming services viewership. Numbers are worldwide with significant bias towards US market up until 2002, afterwards it's balanced by p2p distribution across the globe.
I actually have the data starting 1960s. Let me know if you'd like extended version of this video.

First, what people watch doesn't mean what you think it means. TV shows and movies are a lot like a meal. Sometimes you're in the mood for steak (a heavy drama that demands multiple views) and sometimes you're in the mood for something frivolous (ice cream). Seondly Young Sheldon is charming and funny. I doubt millions of people would continue to watch if it were trash. Trying desperately to convince themselves that they are watching great art (Game of Thrones) cough.

It's interesting to watch the shift from episodic comedies and procedurals to serialised Dramas dominating TV. Until the Sopranos and West Wing came around in 1999, there really was nothing else pulling in big numbers on TV, and even then it wasn't until the mid to late 2000's until the shift actually started to take place. The fact that The Sopranos in particular could compete with these other shows despite being a relatively new format without streaming, with an unorthodox premise (the main character being an unrepentant criminal was highly controversial at the time) on a premium network not accessible to the same viewing base as the others, half a decade before it became cool really is an amazing feat.

@@lebronjamesharden3958 I mean I wouldn’t say it defines the series as I still think the series was a top 3 series of all time, I just think the ending of a show is a pretty important part of the story and if it isn’t told right or portrayed in a popular way it can lower the show’s quality. Nice. Another factor to consider is the way time-shifted viewing changed during this period. While VCRs were extremely common by 1986, DVRs and streaming have changed the landscape totally.

@@3azyac Season 5 was such a trippy over-the-top Science Fiction/Time Travel fest, that I felt like they had sort of redeemed themselves a bit... and that maybe they did have a plan. WOAH MAN were we wrong! Series 6 and The Finale was an epic let down. Such a MASSIVE cheat move to pull on your audience, who remained loyal through the whole series! They did us dirty big time. Still to this day upset about it. However those first 2 seasons will live on in my head forever. What an awesome concept they had going intially. I'd watch a reboot out of morbid curiosity, just to see how they would approach it. Those characters are legendary. I will never forget LOST, even if it ended terribly.

I was relieved to see Lost was top of the pile for so long because it meant it wasn't just me that was taken in by it. In a way it was similar to Orange is the New Black in that its appeal lay in revealing the various backstories. It was totally vacuous, otherwise.

I think the person that made this video just forgot about it. I was looking at the Nielson ratings for The Office and for Grey's Anatomy, and The Office was right on par, in fact besting it in some years. Moreso, on season they nearly doubled the viewership.

When three channels was all you had you didn't have much in the way of choice. Cable penetration was still weak, home rental was still growing and video gaming was not really a thing like it eventually became.

Yeah, Breaking Bad ended in 2013, the same time that House of Cards started to become mainstream. On top of that, there was no plans for Better Call Saul yet, and House of Cards was playing on the average American's fears of Corrupt politicians. So that's why HoC ended up passing BB on the list

Game of Thrones has been my favorite show since the day I started it. I have watched the entire series 4 times. Twice on my own, once with my dad and once with my sister. Now I'm watching it again with my best friend. It is always so fun seeing the first-time reactions, hearing the guesses and seeing the alliances form. Not even the less-than superb end can negate all the amazing memories this show gave me.

Really enjoy these videos, good choice of music too. 'Relajacion Medicinal' obviously worked it's way into my head. Heard it again somewhere else. After using 'Shazam' to identify it, I downloaded it from 'i-tunes' then had to really rack my brain as to where I'd heard it before. Played it over and over again, then suddenly it hit me & back here I am again 🤣

It’d be interesting to see a graph like this that includes both international audiences and rewatch numbers. While they apparently weren’t popular at the time, shows like The Office and Peaky Blinders are cultural phenomenons today, and whilst I don’t speak for the whole world I remember here in Australia during the early to mid 2010’s, as far as tv shows were concerned all anyone really talked about was Walking Dead, GoT and Breaking Bad

The CBS numbers are inflated. I’m not sure how CBS is doing their reporting, but Hawaii Five-O is a horrible show now and is one of their best shows by their numbers. I checked Reddit and Twitter and could barely find any activity. I would take any of the CBS numbers past 2000 with a massive grain of salt.

It's amazing what people watched in huge numbers back in the 1980s and 90s. I'm from UK and some of these shows weren't on TV there. But some of the shows we did get I never watched, like Frasier, ER and Sopranos. Some I've never heard of, Home Improvement, Coach, Grace Under Fire.

I do feel like it could’ve been a good ending overall, if they spent 3-4 more seasons on explaining stuff and keeping the pace like they did throughout the whole series. I’m guessing the ending in the books will be similar just a lot less rushed, more polished and will explain more stuff. Where as season 7 and 8 rushed things and made things seem random. Like Daenerys just randomly turning to the mad queen....
