2019: Most searched thing on yahoo Google

Sometimes I forget Google is actually a website. It's basically everywhere.

It was truly an amazing time to be 12 in 1996 and see computers and Internet grow into what it is now. I feel privileged to be honest

The irony is that most of those sites are probably hosted on Amazon servers...

Part of why Wikipedia did so well is because it’s the gateway to all other sources listed at the bottom whereas no other website was willing to list every source for how the page of information whatever you typed is on their website

2000: yahoo vs google 2020: *ornhub vs *videos

I have been doing web development since 1995 and have some observations: 1. Surprised took Google so long to replace Yahoo. I had switched to Google in 2000 because the results were better 2. Yahoo probably briefly regained the lead after it became more of a content company. 3. MSN was always big due to default home page for IE which of course was default browser for Windows 4. Surprised AOL hung in there until 2013

The real mind blower here is that AOL doesn't drop out of the top 10 until 2013. They'd been a joke for a decade by that point.

1998: Yahoo refuses to buy Google for $1 million dollars 2002: Yahoo tries to buy Google for $3 billion dollars but Google refuses 2008: Yahoo refuses to be sold to Microsoft for $40 billion dollars 2016: Yahoo is sold to Verizon for $4.6 billion dollars Yahoo, the mother of bad decision making (Edit: pls get this to 10k lol)

I was curious to see how the pandemic would change things. Have a feeling that the last two sites would gain a few positions.

I'll admit, I'm a little surprised at just how long and how well Yahoo performed.

Interesting... The only site from the 1996 list I ever actively visited was Yahoo (and some random homepages on Geocities - the "darknet" of the 90s 🙂). My most frequently visited Website in the 90s was Altavista. I'm surprised it never made it into top 10.

I remember seeing AOL ads in Prodigy. Outside of the apparent ad revenue, I never understood why Prodigy did that.

Kinda sad seeing CompuServe here at its end. For a while before widespread home ISP, CompuServe, Delphi, GEnie, Prodigy where the way a lot of us got onto the internet via shell accounts. SpaceWars, SeaWars, MegaWars, CB-Sim, CompuServe was the big goto for a long time. Nice vid!

My first "internet-ready multimedia" PC (that was a thing) back in 1996 had a free subscription to "Prodigy Internet," which was a different offering than their standard service. It was a solid "unlimited" dial-up ISP for the price. The early Internet was such a place of wonder. I used to stay up all night searching random crap just to see what was out there. That Packard Bell Pentium ran at a blistering 150 mhz and had a 56k modem. That was so badass.

I remembered those early 2000's my childhood as this video goes on those times. Longing for old times, childhood is really strange and it has a special pleasure tbh.

I would love to see broadband/ethernet adoption rates over the years (especially fiber optics) breaking out from dial-up. It's crazy how fast broadband blew up relative to dial-up.

Who remembers having an AOL email address just to use the chat messenger? When the idea of watching any video over the internet seemed fathomable? Or when the question of whether Ask Jeeves or Google would become more dominant was considered legitimate? Being startled by the music when clicking someone’s MySpace profile? Arguing about whether downloading from Napster was really stealing or a revolution? Looking for the next Napster after it was shut down and then the next music sharing site after that? Being able to watch almost any television show or movie on RU-vid? Being amazed the first time you could Google something by simply typing it into the address bar? Before email addresses were expected on resumes? When having you own website meant you were either a computer science prodigy or rich? Thinking Yahoo’s search engine was a legitimate alternative to Google? When thousands of websites could fool most search engines simply by adding invisible tags and terms into their website so searches routinely turned up hundreds of irrelevant results?

As someone born in 2003 this is pretty cool

I just realized that all of these where monthly visits and that's the reason why the numbers were higher than the total human population.

I'm surprised Yahoo still remains quite strong, even to this day. I had thought that it had slipped into irrelevance a decade ago. Yandex was bought to my attention earlier this year. It was reckoned to be a good search engine, although I see that they now require a mobile phone number or Google/Facebook account to register. The latter is a bit odd considering that it's a Russian company.

Quite astonishing that even in 2019 Yahoo had 3.4 billion visits.

I worked at American Greetings during and a bit after its time on the top 10 most popular sites. Definitely worked during an interesting time…. the mania of the bubble and the fear during the bust. One day you have stock options and free lunches, next day they lay you off en masse.

I've had internet since that late 90s and I have rarely ever used Yahoo, I went from Alta Vista to Google. I remember when Google was the quirky underdog. I find it a little depressing that adult websites rate so highly, says a lot about the state of humanity. Does this include people using apps? I would of thought Netflix would of made the list.

By the early 2000s more websites were forming because of the internet was expanding to more and more countries, within a few years that's insane

Watching this from my own perspective as I grew up during these changes. I'm like yep aol would be number one for the start of it I mean aol was virtually synonymous with the net for awhile, then was surprised to see how long it took it to drop out of 1 and eventually out of the list. Back in the pre google days I still kind of wonder how I got to and from stuff, I mean I'm sure I probably used yahoo a good amount.
