My issue with link summon is that for years the meta of the game had been changed and pushed to streamline decks that special summon. Then link summoning happens witch comes around and changes the strength of our decks and changes just how it can work. I have come to somewhat expect what they had added to the game, but I won't lie I stopped playing for a year when link hit the TCG

About Casual and Comp players. I have a friend in discord who said something that I do quite agree on in regards to this, here's what he said: I believe there's 4 types of players in this game. Most people say its only casual players or competitive players but in my opinion there's 4 types. 1- the meta tryhard - the guy that only runs meta and calls any player nub if he isnt running a meta deck. Usually just knows how to play 1 meta deck and is clueless about anything that isnt meta. 2- pro competitive player - plays mainly meta but has a deep knowledge of the game and usually knows how to play multiple decks including rogues and for fun decks 3- rogue player - a dude that tries to make a rogue deck as competitive as possible. Usually knows how to play meta but chooses to run rogue and optimise the build in order to beat meta. 4- casual player - a guy that doesnt know or doesnt even touch meta. Just runs for fun decks and usually is out of competitive scenerio.

As far as most of these go I feel like I'm somewhere in the middle. 1. MR4 - I'm fresh back after quitting sometime in 2005 and I really don't have an issue with link monsters, although I missed previous formats. I don't like them not having a defense position however nor do I like the laddering 2. Creativity - Honestly I don't think this has changed much over the years. Back in the early 2000s people still ran very similar decks, the difference was it was a little harder to find lists or order singles. The differences weren't so much creativity but players making the best out of what they had. 3. Hand traps - they're fine as long as they're accessible. This seemingly new trend of them in structure decks is great (Duel Power helped a lot as well) 4. Expensive cards - can't disagree with what was said already. It's on the players supporting those insane prices as well as the short prints. 5. Casual vs Competitive - play however makes you happy. I'm a competitive person but I won't play decks I don't like. Fortunately, LW and some others are good rogue options but this isn't the case for every archetype. In any competitive video game there are metas and some characters are just better than others, so that being the case in a TCG as well just seems par for the course.

- I'm definitely in the anti-MR4 camp. I always rolled my eyes at the people who keep complaining about Synchros, XYZ, and Pendulums because they didn't have to play them as decks could still function fine with or without them. But with MR4, it feels like the first time a summoning mechanic felt genuinely forced. The other summoning methods are forced to take that into consideration. MR4 negatively affects the other summoning methods, which is a first. - I think netdecking is fine. If you're going to put all that money into the game, you're going to feel a greater need to win - I feel like the problem isn't hand traps, it's all the situations and cards that make people feel such a need to play hand traps that's a problem. - As a casual player, seeing the prices of some cards is unbelievable. It's one of the main reasons why I don't play competitively. For example, I have a Counter Fairy deck, but no copies of Pot of Extravagance, which everyone keeps telling me to play even after I tell them I'm a budget casual player, because of the price. I just checked TCGPlayer and Extravagance is over $50 for a single copy. So getting just three of both will cost me nearly $200 just for 3 cards. And it can get even worse for actually competitive decks. - Like I mentioned in my last point, I'm a casual player and the price is one of my main issues. I don't have enough disposable income to consistently pay a lot of money for competitive play. Yugioh is just something I want to play for fun and it's how I bonded with my closest friends, and paying so much would just add extra pressure on me to win and I would have less fun. And another turn off is the amount of competitive elitists I've come across, who value cards and decks entirely on how they do competitively and seem to play purely to win instead of just enjoying a game.

Could either do multiple videos with each game shown, or 1 long video where you show highlights of each game/do a short summary of what happened with some clips added here and there. I got back into yugioh a few weeks ago after not playing for a decade. Had been playing mtg for a while, and got into that by watching The Command Zone yt channels series called Game Knights where they did something similar and it hooked me. @Team APS, hey I just wanted to say I been watching your videos for over a year and I just got back into the game and I am really enjoying it. I would also like to throw in a little tid bit about the casual vs competitive styles of play. I used to play competitive vanguard and force of will, and I would always encounter a group of people that were on a budget, like food stamps and SSI kind of budget. This group would always come into these events like a Thursday tournament for Force of Will, or a tournament I ran for Cardfight, and complain about other players for having good decks. And the irony was most of these decks that were destroying them were not that expensive to make, but its life not many people can afford to pay out for good cards, but they still want to play competitive. Now my opinion on this is if you are willing to sign up for any kind of tournament while using a casual deck and complain cause you got stomped on maybe should stick to playing with friends. Im not trying to be mean but complaining that you didn't win because others were better prepared or you knew well in advance you might not do well shows poor sportsmanship.

Links are cancer, but at least Pendulums can use them. I agree with you Paul, I play Pendulum Magicians because I like the pendulum mechanic and the way magicians can generate resources from the extra deck, but I lose pretty regularly because all the guys in the club are better players and get more practice. Nonetheless I still enjoy playing (except against Trickstar, and sometime Sky Striker) because I know I'm a filthy casual and I don't worry about it. The game can be pay-to-win. It does seem like Konami likes making powerful cards Secret Rare only, and then short printing so you have to either buy a lot of product with no guarantee of getting it, or just pay the singles prices. That said I pulled Borreload, Saryuja, and Borrelsword from packs so it can be done. On the other hand, being smart in your core choices, like playing Pendulum Magicians, you can build a decent core deck for only a few dollars, and then pick up extra deck cards as finances allow. PM allow you access to XYZ from 3 to 7 easily, and Heavymetalfoes Electrumite is pretty cheap now (I remember buying a playset back when we could have 3). Zefra Metaltron and Decode Talker are good Link 3s, and Borreload has just been reprinted making it quite cheap too. Harmonizing Magician is the goddess of the Magician deck and can pull out a level 7 through 11 single material plus tuner synchro monster effortlessly. Even the Mythical Beast cards commonly used (Master Cerberus and Jackal King) aren't too bad at the moment and Darkwyrm and Gate Zero are reasonably priced, although Gate Zero seems to be creeping up. You don't have to play bad cards just because you're on a budget, Soulburner gave us common Ash, and Order of the Spellcasters is giving us common Droll and Desires. Reprints mean you can even play Sphere Mode in your side deck for a low buy in. I'd suggest even if on a budget finding $30 for three copies of Spellcasters is good value even if it's just for the reprints. The budget conscious player does have some good options at the moment.

@akumarajio2691
@akumarajio2691 5 лет назад
1: Master Rule 4 has been good, plenty of support for older archtypes with links, columns are neat if you like strategy, not even remotely as bad as pendulums imo (Firewall not included) 2: Net-decking should be like a recipe, use it as a base and make a good cake, only follow the recipe to the letter like some holy scripture and I might as well go to the fucking cake shop. 3: Handtraps are good in moderation but they are not in moderation. There is a reason I don't want Maxxx C back, Maxx C into Phantazmay into Effect Veiler, Ghost Ogre and Ash Blossom! Might sound over the top but let's be real here, if you're playing stun you can just sub a lot of these with stuff like Red Reboot and Evenly Matched. At this point there is a handtrap to everything. 4: Read Above about my feelings on Maxxx C 5: Not a competitive player so take my opinion with a mountain of salt. Yes, it is pay to win unless you find some lost holy grail deck idea from eras ago but you still need some kind of skill to run a top tier deck (mostly). Some part of me tossed the idea of an actual tier system for competitive play to not make it feel like playing the same to decks per format but I have no idea how that would work. 6: I play this game for fun, I also play to collect, however everyone should play for their own reason. Fuck spending hundreds on a deck and treating it like we are in a world war though in my opinion. In my experience there are far more toxic games but we still have that problem here, competitive Yu-Gi-Oh kinda scares me for those reasons.
@Zanji1234
@Zanji1234 5 лет назад
"plenty support for older archtypes" which are still unplayable due to power creep. Why everytime this subject comes up?? i mean even IF harpies now have support they get wrecked by the current meta where they build up boards with several negates. I mean the basic idea was great -> limited the abuse of extra deck BUT nothing changed since you can uplink and stuff. It would be great if more cards where available who also gave your opponement a extra monster zone BUt the main problem: every monster now has negate abilities, when you start you can block your opponement from playing at all ... forcing you fit in handtraps in your deck otherwise you loose (so at least 6 slots are reserved for hand traps which EVERYONE has to play) to stop this.

Very good discussion topics, I feel if more people displayed at least the amount of mutual respect shown here the game wouldn't be seen as toxic, it's fine to have differing opinions but when you act like children and can't come to a compromise and realize people can think differently and still enjoy the game that's where most of the problems the Yu-Gi-Oh community have stem from and if the community actually cooperated more within itself some of these issues could even go away. Overall tho great video

The last bit about casual vs comp is my friend and I to the T we do both those things I'll say he's not having fun net decking then he'll trash a deck I worked on and it's a constant struggle but we do go back to dueling each other it's just weird to be trying to have fun and duel and want to make a deck that can just run over anything with consistent plays and we butt heads a lot I feel like this is a thing more common in people is that two differing ways on playing just mesh and don't blend well bc I was at a tournament at locals and some people argued and someone said "So this is how you treat your friends" and stormed off it was like watching my friend and I bicker and the most biggest arguments are when we fight over a cards worth he'll call a card worthless and I'll say something like not really it can be a good card and then it'll erupt and we'll go back to fighting we have always butted heads over something in yugioh from rulings to making a mistake and asking to take it back you have any advice to us or anyone at all who can help us try to be better about this stuff?

Super good discussion, dude. I think the only thing I might disagree on is Links and Handtraps. I like Links and generally how they function. I think the ladder climbing effect that you can't really do with any other summon type (except maybe Synchro) is interesting, and the zone placement is a really unique side to this game. This said, I get why others don't like it, and that's totally cool. It really hammered some decks, and to those people, I hope they get some sort of support monster soon, that maybe breathes new life into the deck for this, and coming years. With handtraps, (and I want to extend the discussion to floodgates), I don't think the term "necessary evil" is even really fair. I think with how the game operates now, both are just necessary. It's how you keep interaction in the game, or with floodgates, how you slow your opponent down to your pace so have a chance at dictating the game to a win. I don't see a problem there. There's enough removal, and ways to counteract these cards in the game, further adding to that level of interplay. And I honestly like it. But yeah, almost everything else I agree with. Although it'd be impossible to get *everyone* to not spend bank on cards, but yeah. Would be nice if they were cheaper. ;3

When it comes to competive and casual, I see myself as something inbetween. I enjoy competitive play due to the challenges it presents amd I like going to events. I enjoy casual play duw to not knowing what deck my opponent will play. I hang out with both camps and definitely noticed a few major differences. Also I think in order for yugioh to stay around both camps need to exist. Casual players statistically buy more sealed product, which is what makes the game money. The competive players are what keeps big events going.
@johnnykitsune1949
@johnnykitsune1949 5 лет назад
I understand in a way why some cards are "short print", in every game there needs to be a card or mini fig to chase after in a set to sell out the set and make way for the next set/product launch, usually they will have an extremely powerful effect. My issue with "short print" comes up when they "short print" legacy support cards that competitive players won't be chasing down as they have no real relevance in the current game state and probably won't in the foreseeable future, let alone the fact that these cards will probably not get reprints as a lot of reprints are of cards that are meta relevant or utility cards that support a deck type currently fairing well competitively and have not had a print in some time.

I am on the fence with Link monsters. I agree that they have added some problems to the game (10 min turns), however they have also added limits that were needed... such as you can no longer summon multiple XYZ, Fusion, or Synchro unless you have a Link with multiple arrows.... at least it seemed that way at first, we now have combos that can create boards with 3+ negate effects, and it can lock your opponent down, and I have a massive issue with that. Yugioh requires two people to play... Konami has made efforts to curb FTKs, but the same has not been done to curb FTLD's (First Turn Lock downs). I don't play meta, however it did try it for one tourney and my Links allowed me to create a lock down board on my first turn, my opponent could not do much and thus scooped... this did not feel very good and I have not played the deck since. But that is just me.

Net decking is fine for me cause sometimes I do it just to see if I enjoy a certain style of that archetype. The price equals a decks play value doesn’t sit well for me due to me running older nonexistent decks or non meta style decks examples like archfiends or chaos dragons. If a budget deck can win or perform well enough with low cost cards then it’s a good well built deck. If the cards are just powerful and hard to respond and deal with the broad state that is fine until it just constantly repeating combos in every match. Link monsters are healthy but also unhealthy most decks that run them it just enables the decks to respond to stuff on the broad where decks that need the main deck to hold up responds for everything fall behind to the extender pieces. MR4 I feel pushed decks to be more extra deck focus and not getting broad presence over time through combos from the main deck. Decks that focused on extra deck before are pretty unless cause if they can’t summon what they quickly the opponent can just claim your zone repeatedly and shut down your deck completely if you don’t have link monsters.

I'm just getting back into competitive after a few years. My locals are pretty mixed. The top 8-10 are all competitive people that are playing against each other as practice for the next event. I don't feel superior for trying to get to those tables with a meta deck, but I do feel awful when I run into someone playing a 'for-fun' deck that seems really cool but because I'm playing to try and get to those top tables, the match isn't fun for them because it doesn't compete with the current meta. Playing with the competitive players in the tournament itself is fun as hell, and playing with the casual players with my own casual decks before or after is fun as hell. Still feel a little dirty when I play the casual players with my competitive decks in the actual tournament.

Yugioh is to play and have fun as you play. How the duelist decides to play their decks and build them is up to them, If someone needs help and are new or are a creative block on building a deck means they can have help by net decking. Its up to them, Ive been playing since yugioh started and again I see it for fun. And how you build your deck and what you use if its links or hand traps or play in competitive. Its fun for them.
@lotgc

I think hand traps are a good idea, but I feel that some are too good for having no cost and/or havingfew restrictions. Like Ash, you can negate a pot of desires or any important search card for free. Now if ash required that you discard or banish a card from your hand, I'd think it would be more fair.

The only time I’ve ever consistently had fun at an event was when I went to a regional, the only locals I have time to go to is dominated by people who will only play top tier meta decks (I assume to “practice” for regions and other big events) so much so that they actually seemed to scare away people who play casually there. However, when I went to the regional, I had to play people “at my skill level” because of how match making worked, so I could actually have a back and forth game where both players could have fun and feel like their choices mattered to the actual outcome of the match as opposed to “shit, I didn’t negate that one thing, I’m definitely gonna lose now” which has been a lot of my experience in meta match ups against my definitely casual deck

Thanks for making this Paul. Always good to see these kinds of vids. There is some truth to the statement that you need to spend money in this game to be successful, but only in a COMPETITIVE aspect. On paper, having these expensive cards should help make your deck viable to compete with the meta. Anyone with a regular job and some sense should have a budget to spend cash on a hobby (like this one). However, is anyone OBLIGATED to buy these high priced cards? No, absolutely not and anyone who tells you that you need to deserves to be stuck in the money trap Konami has them in. As for Links I do not like their mechanic and I do not like what they represent. Think of it this way. Konami is EA and Links are DLC, hot fixes, and patches that should've been handled before hand. I've heard people say that Links fixed some of the problems plaguing the game. Yes, that's true but the way Konami went about was just wrong. What was so bad about sitting down and saying "We hear what you're saying and want to work to address the issues." And reaching a conclusion that didn't compromise handfuls of archetypes and decks (which translates to hard earned money people spent) to FORCEFULLY introduce a new mechanic that required specific cards to be able to play legally. People need to understand that Konami is a company that doesn't give a shit about them. And I mean Konami. Not event planners/coordinators they hire, not your local card shop owner, not TCGPlayer or Troll and Toad, but the Japanese company Konami. The same people who made the executive decision to fire Hideo Kojima for stupid reasons and shit on a franchise (MGS) for profit.

I think that yugioh is so creative. You see so many decks in so many different ways of you search the right places and now with so many decks on RU-vid you can see so many ways to play a deck and you can do all what you want with the ideas in your hand. So I'm a big fan of magican because there you have like little packages/engines and I love it when all the packages play together for the big board and there comes the creativity. You can always search new little engines and test them and in pendulum Magician it's very easy to learn all the engines Yea that's my opinion (I'm German so my English is probably bad😅)
