Maybe because of its complexity and elaborate ingredients along with the lack of touristic exposure Guatemala’s cuisine has been overshadowed by their northern neighbor (Mexico). That is why Guatemala’s traditional culinary art remains a hidden gem by many.

Hi there, Guatemalan here! Everything he says is true and more, this is my favorite soup growing up. I used to have it when visiting family in Cobán and stateside during special occasions. Find an authentic recipe and try making it, share our culture more and more. I would love to hear one day that someone has tried it when I bring it up. 30 years old, nobody has ever heard of it before.

I love the Guatemala videos. That is my 2nd. home. My son and I lived there for 7 years. I worked for the corporation Pizza Hut opening up new stores for them there. And I was so disappointed when my job came to an end, and I had to come home to the USA. I love the people and culture they have. And until you taste the food you have no clue the flavors you get. Oh my gosh! It is so good. Thank you Mark for this video. I sure hope there are more Guatemala videos coming. Still waiting.

I dont like Mark weins show, but this episode of guatemala i watched because I am a jamaican born chef and everything he ate looked delicious. I been to mexico, now I need to try Guatemala. The food is cooked similar to african food in that everything is well seasoned and in a rich looking sauce. The fried chicken 🍗 was looking fingerlicking good. They cooked so clean too. You know there has to be some indigenous african influence there. I really want to visit. Good job mark weins ! 😊

Hi Mark! I'm not Guatemalan, I'm Mexican, but I might be able to offer some insight about the tamales. The tamal you ate with the Kak'ik appears to be made the way most people think tamales are made by mixing the masa with lard, shaping into tamal shape on the banana leaf, then steaming it. That's what causes the density in the masa of the tamal when you eat it. The masa in the tamal you ate separately with the meat and olives goes through a different process where they actually COOK the masa in a pot (stirring constantly!) before putting it on banana leaves and steaming them. This changes the texture of the masa and makes it softer and more fluffy. I'm Mexican but I ADORE Central American food, especially their tamales. 🤤

She should have warned you about the drink. Part of the reason for my comments from your previous videos on this region was in part to a family who essentially saved my life in when I was living in Houston. The grandmothers in that family were all about traditional foods and this is some of what they used to make for all of us. There's really nothing else like it. What a wonderful day you had with these beautiful people. Thank you for sharing this with us.
