Editing audio is a part of being a voice actor. No matter your DAW, you have to edit based on your waveform right? Well, only if you remember this one thing...

Rump shaker takes me back….good tips about editing with your ears and not the eyes. I’m still practicing that.

I’m explaining to seventh graders while volunteering about mammals in our backyard, and I give them a little assignment to stop sometime during the day and listen to what’s around them close their eyes and listen to all the sounds that is it is a skill to acquire, and when you listen, you will hear things that you won’t see so I’m glad to be watching this Gabby thank you very much!

Excellent topic, as usual. Complete side note: you only need a mono track for a mono signal. Voice over usually only involves a single mic. Even if you're using two different mics; it's still two different mono signals coming in. There is no need for a stereo track when the signal is from a mono source. Just my $0.02.

Yes! I talk about this alot too. A stereo file for voice is just a larger file. Not actually stereo, since the human voice is mono. One mouth, two ears is how I explain it.

And Spectral view as well!

Spectral view is essential! SO many sounds that don't show up on the waveform that you can still hear, and if you're only using the waveform the listener will definitely hear your edits.

It's comforting to see someone's peaks increase like mine do with a's. I cannot not have that happen with emphasized words with a's and have been so annoyed by it. Reaper DAW allows you to hear what your rendered file will be like at appropriate mastered volumes while you edit, but unfortunately there's an insane learning curve involved with the DAW and it's difficult to find tutorials that are VO-specific and taught in a linear fashion. I miss the days when Adobe products were a one time purchase.

hmm interesting. It is something i do in casual conversation. I think I tone is down a bit on mic but it's not something that's ever been enough of an issue for me to have to do anything special in edit.

I make YT vids for beginner audio producers, and your comment makes me think I should make a video (or series) dedicated to editing non-musical vocals, because you're 100% correct, there's not a whole lot out there and I've had to figure a lot of it out on my own.

@@GiftofGab I am 10000% down for a YT collaboration, if your offer is serious. I've only just discovered your channel, but I dig your style and content and would be honored to be associated with it in any way.

I'm more of a performer than a voice actor but strongly co-sign all of this just the same. The radio station I'm on decided a while back they want me to voice all their ads and promo material, so I've had to get to grips with rudimentary editing of my voice before it even leaves this roon; I can't take it as a given that whoever gets it next will catch what needs catching! Like, I'll notice sloppy 'jump cuts' on things like Marvel movie trailers and be absolutely flabbergasted that such things were allowed to air that way, even though most won't ever notice what's amiss…!
