Lemmy is like a rythm guitar played on the bass - don't say you don't hear his bass - more like you don't recognize it - he IS that guitar sound ;)

Overkill on Top of the Pops was probably the introduction to Motorhead for most Brits, and it was the performance we were talking about in school the next morning. One of those things that shifts the musical world on its axis just a little bit. Emerging in the midst of punk, it was that important.

Seriously, they cranked it up to 11 live. Saw them 4 times, the last being in Cambridge, UK. They ended with this song and just blew the hell out of the venue. It was like a wall of sound. If it was anyone else or a different band, you would be complaining. But, Motorhead are an example scientifically the loudest band on the earth. A rare experience, never heard a band like it since.

Lemmy once growled 'If we moved in next door to you, then your lawn would die'. It was not an original quote, as Frank Zappa had used it during the early days of The Mother's Of Invention!

If I was to say 'typical Motorhead' it might sound like a dismissal, but it's actually high praise. This is typical Motorhead - loud, fast, simple, headbanging rock and roll. There's many other tracks to discover that are in this style but even when they did something different - eg. 1916 - it still pricks up the ears. 22 studio albums to explore but pace yourself. Too much speed is bad for you (though it rarely did Lemmy any harm).

I bought the album back in 79, and yeh I thought the same about the bass ( but just on this album for some reason). The sound of Lemmys bass is what makes the sound of Motorhead and I wouldn't change a thing. Saw them twice in the late 70s... my ears are still ringing!!

It never ceases to amaze me what a trio is capable of producing: ELP, Cream and Motorhead amongst others. Lemmy was an amazing composer and I always wonder what Hawkwind would have been if he had stayed in the band. There are great Motorhead songs and then there are those that everyone needs to hear. Try listening to "Capricorn", "Metropolis", "Poison", "Sweet Revenge", "Bomber", "I Got Mine", "Dancing On Your Grave".

Fast Eddie Clark created a band called “Fastway” in the early 80’s. I liked the track “Say What You Will” but I wouldn’t recommend it for the channel. Not enough substance and crossing over into hair band territory. As a 13-year old at the time, I really liked it. I will put in another plug for the track “Diary of a Madman” by Ozzy Osbourne. Fabulous guitar work with elements of a progressive flavor.

Now do Overkill - The band! Obviously inspired greatly by Motorhead, one of the early thrash metal bands... Much better than the "Big Four", though. Overkill also hit their peak in the early 90's AND in the early 2010's. IRONBOUND!!!!

My favourite Motorhead song.. my first album back in the early 80s was No Sleep Til Hammersmith Live album, why nobody reacts to it I've no idea it's a Motorhead greatest hits album with the best line up at their peak... seen them at the Glasgow barrowlands in 84, a small venue.. I couldnt hear for days!!! :) You want to hear Lemmies bass listen to the intro of the self titled song motorhead from that album.. on low volume!

Actually Justin, you can hear Lemmy's bass throughout the song but it gets mixed up with the guitar because Lemmy was putting chords on his bass so it gives a maelstrom sound. Usually I hate the double bass drum pedal (with some exceptions) but "Philthy Animal" Taylor plays this in an almost relaxed and airy way, the same with "Fast" Eddie Clarke who didn't use an oversaturated guitar sound or superfluous demonstration like most metalheads thereafter. Anyway, Motörhead didn't make heavy metal but powerful hard rock. Generally not my type of music, I still remember that Overkill had greatly impressed me when it was released in 1979. No one at that time had a sound like it and that's what made me decide to buy the album shortly after. This remains my favorite album from the Motörhead trio.
@pentagrammaton6793
@pentagrammaton6793 10 месяцев назад
I have to say, this track (like many others by them) is pure heavy metal.
@a.k.1740
@a.k.1740 10 месяцев назад
@@pentagrammaton6793 Personally I don't hear that although I see the influence of Motörhead on the whole heavy metal scene to come (The inspiration is obvious). The sound is overpowering, the musicians' playing is devastating and Lemmy's voice is raw, but Eddie Clarke's riffs or solos don't sound like heavy metal clichés. it stays in powerful hard rock 'n' roll territory.
@pentagrammaton6793
@pentagrammaton6793 10 месяцев назад
@@a.k.1740 you're right about their uniqueness, but Overkill ticks all the boxes: heavily distorted guitars, emphatic rhythm, use of heavy riffs throughout. Lemme was always in denial, but yeah, Motorhead were metal as all f*ck.
@Owlstretchingtime78
@Owlstretchingtime78 10 месяцев назад
I personally believe that 'Ace Of Spades' is where they truly found their feet. It was also the only time i caught them live. Very loud, but surprisingly not as loud as Saxon!

@a.k.1740 10 месяцев назад
@@pentagrammaton6793 It's not denial, it's just that, like Lemmy, I don't hear heavy metal in the songs on the Overkill album! By that I mean that their sound is at the confluence of hard rock, punk and heavy metal but that doesn't make it an archetype of metal. For me it's just powerful hard rock tinged with punk rock energy.

Only the singles No Class and Louie Louie (on TOTP) really excited me...but I was only young. Bring on the Mighty Van Halen whole discography Roth era!. Scratch the Surface, no...... Go Beyond! the Poodle hair rock Stereotype and HEAR!! the difference! their LPs made to Rock n Roll. Light Up the Sky! JP! Muddy Production on this as you said. Alternatively, Listen to "Aerosmith ROCKS" with it's raw snap and melodic crackle and let yer ears pop! Easy! they'd both be blocked i presume so maybe not that easy. ignore me . I'm just reliving my opinionated 14 year old brattish undertones that were prone to being Led By The Mob whenever bands like Motorhead played live in our city. Occasionally seeing Budgie and Pat Travers Band would make the whole Circus Scenario worthwhile while having to go thru the motions with the NWoBHM brigade such as Yawn Maiden and Cough Saxon. Doh ! I've name-checked now. Oh no -that can only lead to more Strangers in the Night 747 ridiculous hackneyed posturing and cheesecloth shirt MEMORIES with flares on in Sophia Gardens before the snow made the roof collapse... .. Denim & Leather My Brain...Phil Collins high as a kite in 1980 singing Say it's Alright Joe and gettin stroppy with the punters who saw thru the amateur dramatics...Yep those were the days... We saw Genesis close up... Deep in the Motherlode..in all it's Banksian Rutherford Collins Darryl & Chesterist ONSLAUGHT. That WAS Impressive! Seeing Motorhead with the Bomber lighting rig was ok , but well, maybe it's time for me to admit it... I was there coz my mates were there. The music was poor! wot do we (i.e. society) listen to now? Lowest Common Denominator Factor Bands? Do Motorhead tick all the boxes? Their t shirts are almost up there with the Nirvana / Ramones Phenomenon , being an almost Warhol-ian Social Anti Establishment Fashion Statement that ultimately feeds the Corporate Dog .. and allows teens to tread the laziest of Rebellions. And while I'm here, does anyone else remember being mystified for weeks after seeing Animal Taylor's "Whale Oil Beef...Hooked "T-shirt in the music press?...They certainly were hyped up at the time but as you may have guessed by now JP, it's opened up a few psychological scars! .....They weren't that good. Wish I'd gone to see Thomas Dolby instead! So, to confirm , Motorhead MEh. Sex Pistols, Meh. All superficial musical nonsense bar a few catchy singles. 82% ... Not for the song . For the amount of cr*p music I've endured over the years. Diolch JP. We're Smilin We're Smilin'

I don't really post negatively anymore (I considered it a healthy decision to avoid certain tedious replies), but if any of you have been harmfully exposed to all that navel gazing hipster drivel like Tom Waits or Nick Cave (you know, the stuff that makes you want to fill your pockets with rocks and jump in the sea), then this, THIS band right here is the antidote. :transmission ends:

So which part wasn't negative? Tom Waits and Nick Cave are both brilliant songwriters. You've made it clear on various occasions that you just need to feel your music. Others want something more. Is one better than the other? That's for the listener to decide.
