It's like the battle starts the second you touch the enemy, kind of like Kingdom Hearts, a game that has no battle transitions: all its combat is more head-on but without the turns.
I’ve never seen or played Mother 1 before, but I absolutely LOVE how the first battle is within the first minute of gameplay, unlike other RPGs watch 30 mins of cutscenes first lol
This is utterly brilliant, Mother with a fresh coat of paint and some modern QoL would have been enough, but this really does feel like what they would have made if Mother came out today
Yesss Pippi is so underrated. Since she appears later in the game too originally I wonder how that's gonna be worked into the story. Maybe she'll help us out in the swamp too.
I love this so much. The animations are fluid and the sprites are on another level. One complaint though; the enemy drop percentages are extremely high. Like, every battle, the enemy drops a food item that fills your inventory and gets annoying after a while. Otherwise, the game is like the mother 4 we never had (yes I know about oddity, it was never officially released as mother 4 though)
@@ZXUmi I know it! I just forgot about it. It looks really neat, and compared to oddity, actually feels much more like a mother game. I love the protagonist designs and I (am not too fond of but, I) find it unique that it has 2 boys and 2 girls.
No, since I haven't checked the Mother community for a while, I think no. But there is a lot of information for Oddity. They have made a lot of sprites. The trailer I saw, though about Oddity, it seemed like there's a lot going on in the game, but it is far from the roots of Mother, that's why it was rebranded as its own game. The other Mother 4 has much more information about it though, even though it's unofficial.
I really like the visuals, but I'm finding it hard to get behind some of the audio and dialouge choices. I love the intro, but I'm not sure I like all the details in Ninten's room. Obviously it's a fan game and they can do what they want, but it feels strange that Ninten would have a conspiracy diagram in his room about his great grandfather. There's other details like this that bother me, but the quality of life improvements and streamlining of mechanics is a nice step up. I hope they can round out some of the more awkward dialouge and music, but I'm excited nonetheless.
Mother quite needed an overhaul and man does this look more spectacular than we could ever hope for. The animation and designs look really awesome, the interface is intuitive, and you can tell that the sound design was really important to them. This is what Mother would be like on the SNES in the best way possible.
Nah not really, but this is still amazing. Honestly, it doesn’t replace the original but it’s a completely different experience at that point which is pretty cool.
The game have a lot of wanderfull ideas, and I love it. But it is pretty unbalanced, almost every new zone is a chockepoint, the encounter rate is pretty high and the UI in the late game is confusing. I think a remake/overhould would be great, so more people could enjoy it.
OK, I *really* like the fact you can get initiative attacks if you hit an enemy before a fight happens. Only real thing I can think of is that maybe regular battles should have the other encounter start sound like 2 introduced and 3 kept. At any rate, this looks even more polished than Mother 3, which is really hard with how much it was refined over 2.
i love how they mick bipedal so much. like in the original game he LOOKED a bit bipedal but it was almost certianly just a weirdly drawn sprite and not a literal thing given as his clay model showed him like a normal dog, but here they just embraced it and made him look bipedal.completely its sooo goofy lookin.
I love the original Mother 1 but I must admit mostly for the story, so I'm pretty excited about the idea of these quality of life improvements making the story more accessible for everyone

I've picked up and dropped Mother 1 so many times because I didn't know what to do or where I was going. I'm glad these remake devs made the story convey what you're supposed to do and taught you how to play.
Love the Starman Jr boss theme. Not a big fan of the Pollyanna rendition though. It sounds a bit too country and not enough drum like the Original had. Great looking project anyhow!
well i strongly believe the devs wanted to include pippi as enemy you fight as there's unused sprite of in model look of Pippi thats looks identicial to her clay model there's a theory original before she joined ninten she mistaken him for a zombie and attacked him idk thats just a theory most people thought off
Because they still don't understand the west likes rpgs, and that more people than just kids play video games. The Mother games while not GTA levels of "adult content" are certainly less geared toward children than they'd like their IPs to be. So I personally think that's the biggest challenge, that Nintendo thinks they won't be profitable since they're not made with the biggest possible kind of appeal.
@@zian01000 This is false btw. You've been misled into believing the IP is solely owned by Itoi but this is debunked by official merch sold through Itoi's own company Hobonichi.
I wonder if that's gonna be Ninten's signature move, since he doesn't have a "rockin" or "love". Or if they'll do the fan thing of giving him Pk Techno
This game looks fantastic, the original was the only one in my opinion in need of a remake, and now look at it. It’s beautiful. I wish Nintendo gave the Earthbound/Mother series as much love, I hope that one day they do.
This looks great, but it's all fun and games until Nintendo decides they don't want this. Knowing them, they don't want to work with their fans. But if they did, their games will turn out a lot better.
@@sweetypuss This is misinformation propagated by the Mother fan community because it's a convenient excuse for why Nintendo hasn't targeted fans of Mother for the past few decades. The Mother IP is a co-ownership which is easily fact checked by the visible copyright present on all official Mother media including merch sold through Itoi's own company Hobonichi as well as the Ness and Lucas amiibo. Even the simple use of logos requires the shared Shigesato Itoi/Nintendo copyright. So the idea that Nintendo only owns the games/code is also misinformation. The only reason Itoi retains partial ownership is because he wasn't a Nintendo employee. The IP was a joint venture between both parties. And as a co-owner Nintendo has the legal right to issue takedowns without the involvement of another co-owner like Itoi. His approval would be required to move forward on new projects though as all parties must be in agreement.
I’m hoping this fan remake isn’t as grind heavy as the original since that ruined the entire game for many since that was the big flaw in the original.
5-ish+ years and counting. The takedown still hasn't happened even after all this time. It's high time you people stopped with the dumb DCMA or whatever coments.
@@austria-hungary7680 The Mother IP is a co-ownership. You have misled into believing Itoi solely owns the IP but this is debunked by official merch sold through his own company containing the shared Shigesato Itoi/Nintendo copyright. Co-owners are also granted the right to enforce their copyright and issue takedowns without the involvement of other co-owners. This has happened in the past with Sony targeting reuploads of the Mother 1 studio produced album which they have partial ownership of.
It hurts to see a fan game of such high quality on literally every single aspect. Give me one good reason why Nintendo shouldn‘t let indie studios make games of dead IPs at the moment.
This particular IP concluded its story and I don’t think it needs to be like Final Fantasy where there are just endless games using the same name that have barely any connection to each other. I agree on pretty much any other IP that Nintendo has that they aren’t using, though, probably just not this one.
This was made with so much love and attention to detail though. Plus it's only the first part of the game so far. I don't get why you're saying it fails compared to the original. The original IS really great but there are QOL adjustments and a more developed cast that this remake adds that feel very in line with the Mother series. We haven't seen enough of the game yet though to truly say if it does or doesn't live up to the original though. Mother 1's strength was never gameplay, quite honestly, so changing it up really doesn't constitute as a failure. It's true heart is in its story and it's world, which I think are being treated well so far. As someone who does really like the original too though, what would you want to see done differently then?
Pfft mother 1 good? 😂😂 Maybe for it’s time but the gameplay was unbalanced and not tested, graphics weren’t good, terrible dungeons, and the story was barely coherent or linear. This is 1 million times better than Mother 1.
@@austria-hungary7680 Yeah I still think it’s a game not worth playing. Though I did made a mistake saying “weren’t”. Aren’t would be more appropriate here.
@@yourtypicalcupoftea You've been misled. The IP is a co-ownership and not solely Itoi's. This is easily fact checked by the visible Shigesato Itoi/Nintendo copyright present on all official Mother merchandise. Even those sold through Itoi's own company Hobonichi. The reason this is so widely accepted by the hardcore mother fan community is because it's a convenient enough excuse as to why Nintendo has left them alone for decades and allows Mother fan projects to exist with no issue. People don't question it because Itoi is their god king who they believe is sticking it to big evil corporate Nintendo.
I honestly feel like Itoi wouldn't allow it. He seems like the type of guy who would welcome a remake with this kind of love and care in it, and tell Nintendo to get stuffed if they tried to take it down though. While yes, he might not have legal rights to the whole series by himself he DOES have influence with Miyamoto that I feel like if he likes this enough, he'd ask for it to stay up. In the case of something like Oddity which got a C and D, I think the reasoning in that case is because it was trying to be "Mother 4" which Itoi at the time explicitly did NOT want. Now though he's more open to the idea but has said "if it is going to be made, I won't be the one making it". He does have a few game makers he's worked with who COULD be successors but we don't know if it would ever come to be made or why.
@@Ranixo286 Oddity never received a C&D. If they did they would have had to stop development all together. They rebranded preemptively out of fear of a potential takedown after other notable fan games like Pokemon Uranium and Another Metroid 2 Remake were struck back to back. Making it a scary time to be a Nintendo fan game dev. But Nintendo at no point approached them. The Oddity devs also spun it as an opportunity to allow more creative freedom divorced from Mother IP.
as a hardcore Mother fan (I have a tattoo) I'm pretty disappointed by this. they really missed the tone of the music, art style, and writing. I get that it's supposed to be a reinvention or whatever but it's just too far removed from the heart of the original series to resonate. not to mention the spastic fucking sprite animations with every single action good Lord. not like this is ever gonna come out though so it doesnt matter lol
Yikes. As another hardcore mother fan, I thought it was great. But if it's so bad to you, why not give some feedback and actual criticism on what they can improve upon outside of just general hate? What you said doesn't give any real/specific basis on what to fix
It's designed with Mother 3 in mind. That game is known for its dynamic animations and quirky style though? I do agree that maybe the attack animations for EVERY attack might be a little much at times but that feels like a nitpick. Also the art style is very similar to the illustrations that went along with the game with a mix of Mother 3. The music and writing also has nods to 2 and 3, so I feel like this is also a love letter to the series as a whole. It really just seems you want to give hate on it for being new, rather than see your game be updated honestly.
No offense but l like it's trying too hard to look fancy that it ends up not feeling like Earthbound. It's just too much in general. Too much animation, too much movement, too much detail, too many transitions. It makes it look generic and not match Earthbound's more understated tone.
why care about things like subtlety when you could just overdo everything? clearly more is more! this is why fan games are hit or miss, more often miss

People take this at face value and don't question it because it's a convenient excuse for why Nintendo chooses not to target Mother fan content after all these years. Ignoring that Itoi considers the IP finished/complete and Nintendo having nothing in the pipeline as the Mother series isn't a premier franchise/money maker for them. If Itoi solely owned the IP then he wouldn't be directing fans to Nintendo who keep pestering him about a Mother 3 localization. A co-ownership would require that both parties be in agreement to move forward on new projects and clearly Nintendo has no interest in localizing Mother 3.
