I hate it when we are told we shouldn't fear them. You should always have a healthy fear of a large predator while you are in their environment.

Well, i think what's meant is don't fear them as mindless killers, respect them of course and know them as predators.
@lta6494
@lta6494 2 года назад
I'd rather they be mindless killers. I'm tired of the stat , as a percentage, that you're more likely to be killed by "X"... Well of course I am! I live where there are bees, snakes, 🌪️, lightening, etc... I don't live in the ocean. For once I wish I could hear a REAL stat about the people who engage in high risk behavior: surfing, spearfishing, abalone harvesting, and have it weighted for time in water. I bet their chances of being killed by a 🌋 instead of a 🦈 go waaaaaasyyyy down! And can they please trust that after hearing the truth I won't commit a shark genecide, just because someone I don't know got eaten doing something they knew full well came with the risk??????

They mean respect them. They don't mean swim up and pet them. They mean calmy keep your distance and don't do anything to provoke them. Think about leaving the water and return when they have went on their way. About 10 people die in shark attacks per year. About 150 people die in peanut allergy attacks per year. They don't go running out of the store when they come across the peanut butter shelf..

I had a very near miss in spring 1976 off the Turkish coast. I was 17 going on 18 and was snorkeling in 20/25 feet of water. I was chasing a octopus from one coral outpost to another coral outpost, perhaps 30 feet away when the rubber seal on my goggles twisted slightly and started to let some water in. I kept moving eith my flippers but stopped using my arms as I lifted my hands to my goggles to settle them right. In that instant of stopping moving my arms, I slowed slightly. In that I second, perhaps 2 or 3 seconds, a massive great white, moving from my right to my left, passed my head, jaws open. It missed me by literally 2 or 3 inches. It was really moving fast. It was huge. It totally filled my field of vision and its water displacement buffeted me. All I remember is twisting back to shore along the sea floor and stepping out of the water, in shock! I've never been swimming in water again deeper than 3feet or further from the shore than 10 feet. I remember it like it was an hour ago

@@alextabet9247 my near miss happened in 1970's, many years ago. Since that time i gave discovered Grest Whites are in fact VERY common in the Med and over the years there have been hundreds of attacks and many of those Fatal. Also, the Med is a birthing ground for the large females. Also, the largest Great White ever caught/recorded was caught of off Malta in excess of 24 feet in length. The info is out there.

@alextabet9247 2 года назад
@@ablejohn58 That is scary. I always felt comfortable taking my family to resorts on the Med because I had never heard of shark attacks. I know the Red Sea is a breeding ground for Tiger Sharks, and the Atlantic, Pacific, Particularly the Floria, California, South African and Australian coasts, are home to many Great Whites. You often hear of attacks on humans in those areas. Perhaps the tourist-dependent communities in the Mediterranean area mute the attacks to not alarm tourists. Good thing we avoid sea water and flock to the swimming pools! ;) Thanks for informing me.

Many years ago, while on vacation with my husband, we thought it would be fun to 'fool around' in the ocean off the coast of South Carolina. It was well after midnight and no one else was on the beach. We swam out about 30 feet from shore, kissed one time and then looked at each other with wide eyes. We were both overcome by fear that a shark was close by and that an attack was imminent. We swam back to shore as fast we could, absolutely terrified. We never saw a shark, but the feeling of doom that hit us at the same time was incredible. You couldn't pay me any amount of money to enter the ocean at night again. Great videos! 💜

I was sailing on a big racing catamaran in Daytona Beach FL back in the mid 90’s and we had stopped out on the ocean just to chill out and relax. I was sitting next to my girlfriend (now my wife) on the canopy portion of the vessel with our feet hanging in the water. I happen to look straight down and see this thing swimming straight up towards our feet. I instinctively pulled my feet out of the water and that fish turned on a dime and headed back downwards. That thing scared the hell out of me, it was definitely a big shark not sure what kind other than it was big and surely had a mouth full of teeth. Now when I vacation I no longer go in the ocean unless I’m in a regular boat.

Hi Hal about the Bull shark, over here in Queensland Australia there certified Examples of bull sharks 40-45 kilometres up stream in fresh water. They are caught on a regular basis . There is an instance when we had a large flood due to the effects of a large cyclone. The water in the Brisbane River overflowed into a medium sized lake and deposited between 8-10 Bull sharks around four feet into the lake, where most of them live today. I think a few were removed but I’m not too sure about that. If you need confirmation I am certain our main newspaper has the story and photos. This is in case you are interested. Keep you videos coming although some are rather ghastly, most are interesting. No I don’t swim in the ocean any more.Cheers from Australia

Same here in South Africa, Iain. In fact the largest Bull ever caught, was caught here in the Breede River (Breede means 'Wide'), a massive female. A few of them have also been trapped in the St.Lucia estuary for many years now and it was a regular occurrence seeing Bulls, Crocs and Hippo's have a go at each other, in the estuary.

I'm sure Hal is talking about the April Fools joke about a shark in Lake Pepin. Lake Pepin is part of the Mississippi River. Another April Fools joke is about the bull sharks in the area breeding and pupping in the small streams. They did big articles about them and had the "Gotcha" sentence at the end. People recirculating these jokes remove the "Gotcha" sentence at the end and push them as fact to troll people. Since these look like scientific articles released by the DNR or other sources Hal has convinced himself that actual biologists and zoologists are intentionally trying to mislead people for nefarious reasons. Just google Bull shark in Lake Pepin. After reading the article add this sentence at the end of it. "Any resemblance in the above story to actual fact may be coincidental and could be disregarded, depending on your mood. April Fools!"

I do. I've been ridiculed for pointing out that sharks do attack people with the intention of eating them. The whole new way of thinking is that they are just big salt water puppies that are misunderstood and will only bite you because they are curious and will leave you alone afterwards. This way of thinking about sharks has been pushed forward for at least the last twenty years or more. Along with the thinking that you are more likely to be struck by lightning. The problem with it is that people don't hang outside in a lightning storm, but continue to put themselves on the menu on the beaches. A guy like the biologist that got attacked has learned from the new way of thinking, and made a routine of a nightly swim that strengthened what he was taught every time he did it without getting attacked. Hopefully he learned his lesson and no longer does such things during the peak hunting time, but he might still be stuck in the new way he was taught, and might not be so lucky next time.

Its a psychological addiction to risk behavior. Its a very deep psychological problem . The ocean is immense and beautiful but also terrifying . I nearly drowned twice. There are RIP currents that will take you out. The ocean is beautiful from the shore but it has immense power. I remember the gigantic tsunami in Thailand .The Videos are terrifying. People engage in risky behavior enjoying cheating death a profound exhilaration. Yes like sky diving it releases a euphoria a pleasure sensation to the brain. Risking death but I understand how people enjoy the thrill and peace of nature. It can be peaceful and therapeutic but you have to acknowledge its dangerous?

Interesting. I’m from SA and have attended to shark bite victims when I was in the ambulance service. I actually love sharks, especially Great Whites. They are magnificent, but swimmers must always remember that they are swimming at their own risk, it’s like going into the wilderness. Sharks are not there waiting to attack people. They think they are food and take a taste usually. There are not really many shark attacks if one really counts how many swimmers there are how many shark attacks take place, it’s minimal. But very good video

Hearing you talk about how places are telling everybody that the bites were from anything BUT a shark reminds me of the famous fictional tale of the beach of Amity Island, that was the towns bread and butter from the tourists that flocked there every summer. They too kept a tight lid of the fact they had a shark problem. They needed the tourist's money no matter what. Jaws anyone? That sounds exactly what the places that you mention are doing. Hell, say she was attacked by a really hungry blue crab, but don't you dare say a shark. And you are right, you have a body with bite wounds, you know what made these wounds. From the people about friendly sharks to the White Tip being the leader in kills in open seas which is laughable. Nobody is going to not go to these vacation spots over an attack. I dont think it would matter a bit. People bitten in groups of 3 at times per day on the mainland, but dogfish bites they will give details on. Waters are 'too warm' apparently. Nowadays, marine biologists are saying they're travelling through the Gold Coast regularly and close to shore. Plus there was last year's cctv footage showing that unfortunate fella being eaten by a great white, 150-200m from the beach. Metro Gold Coast beach. Hard to argue with that.

It’s not only the money. The “scientific” establishment has been lying for many years about the number of attacks, as well as lying about the nature of shark attacks, in order to protect them at all costs. They have also lied about the GWS population. More and more GWS are being spotted all over the world, and scientists are now admitting that they may have “miscalculated” the numbers. I think that GWS are fascinating creatures, and understand that they are pivotal to the food chain and a healthy ecosystem. But not at the expense of innocent human lives being lost due to lying and misinformation. For those that have common sense (which is in short supply these days), it isn’t hard to figure out that when a large Apex predator that has been around for millions of years is hungry, they’re going to eat whatever is on the menu, specially when the item menu is an easy meal, since humans are not naturally aquatic beings. Some attacks are definitely territorial in nature. But many are predatory in nature. How anyone can dispute this fact is dumbfounding.

My dad did a study on sharkbites back in the late fifties early sixties. We lived at Amanzimtoti ,South Coast Natal , South Africa. There had been a spate of attacks in Toti, Hiberdene and Isipingo. The shark nets had just been introduced. Dad told us to look at the water and not to swim in certain conditions. We listened. He showed us the photos of the bites. One was a guy called Michael who was bitten in his side. His intestines were hanging out and there was no treatment for shock. He got very very cold. The medics took him to hospital and he recovered fully ...apparently because of hyperthermia. His body temp dropped drastically and it saved his life. At a place called Umgababa there was effluent from an upriver factory. There were hundred of sharks in this semi fresh and fresh water. Dad said the sharks got rid of parasites in fresh water. At Isipingo river my dad was standing in the river fishing when he saw a large Great White coming at him. When they bite you, they keep on biting you. One killed a beautiful 14 year old girl here in Florida over ten years ago, if memory serves. An older gentlemen (a surfer) who went out to help, said her body was bobbing up and down from being bitten into and the shark didn't want to let her go, as he pulled her body to shore. I had a pilot fly me over Florida ocean and saw sharks right by swimmers and people. That kept me out of the water for a time. Bulls are so aggressive. I know a guy that was swimming in early morning for the iron man type marathons and he got attacked by a bull in Alabama. I have heard some scary stories of Tigers hunting humans til they got them. You don’t swim in October or November in Hawaii and so these women didn’t know that, because they didn’t ask locals, and in the morning swim they were attacked, one woman was killed, and the other made it back. I saw this guy swim with a tame tiger shark he befriended on video, and that was amazing, but I wouldn’t try it. The water believe it or not in Florida can get very cold, even in summer, because me and my papa went too far out and it dropped off like we were in the Grand Canyon underwater, and got really cold. I wanted to berate myself for not being more careful but I just told my papa we’re in trouble daddy. I said don’t splash or make any noises, and then we meditated to try and lower our heart and pulse rate so the bulls won’t pick up on us. Thank God he listened, to me cause at first he wasn’t taking me serious, plus I have seen sharks in Louisiana waters right in the shallows where a older man had a bat and I said hey Capitaine, ma Cher (Cajun for my dear) what’s the bat for?, he said hammerheads, and sure enough there they were in the shallows! I don’t like when people say you don’t have to worry about sharks, yeah you do. You should always be aware they are in the water and with the overfishing and issues with environment they are going after bigger prey. There was an Aussie guy that talked about that and was very knowledgeable about sharks attacking, one of the most terrifying videos I saw was after a women on her honeymoon was saved by her husband who saw a great white coming straight for her, so he puts himself in the path of it and pushes her away and is decapitated. She was in shock on the beach, looked horrible. I can only imagine what she witnessed. Horrifying. But God almighty what a horrible way to die. And what a horrible thing to witness. Yes sir! I was born and still live in Florida on the West Coast South of Tampa. In my lifetime there have been a massive amount of shark attacks. Mostly Bull Sharks which is now known to be the most dangerous to humans as they DO eat humans. Most of those incidents were covered up and as of around 2004 not only were Great White Sharks reported on the Atlantic side but also in the Gulf of Mexico as far up as New Port Richey. USF has adopted a do-not-tell approach following political and tourism pressures as well as totally ignorant scientists saying all Sharks are to be protected and especially the most deadly to us...the Bull shark. We fishermen, divers and swimmers ALL know this fact, we are most alert as to possible Bull Sharks and Tigers.

Great episode Hal. Those shark attacks were horrific and actually very sad to hear, but those accounts should be heard! It's good to hear the UK is still being discussed, Aussies fighting off Great Whites with surf boards, Americans trying to fend off attacks with spear guns, and the British falling over trying to carry a dead shark or showing one to their mates in a pub and being injured. Nice to know we're still in the mix. Heart felt condolences to the friends and relatives of victims of shark attacks...what is striking though is that there is often no pain...just a sensation of compression...

Once we were in between sand bars treading water approximately 8 ft. from each other when we both felt the infamous bump. Hey Hal great video. I'm with you on the misinformation about shark attacks these days. I've been ridiculed for pointing out that not all are mistaken identity. But I'm wondering about the bull shark in the great lakes. I too think it's to cold for them. That said, I think a more plausible case would be a Greenland shark. I do recall a show that was trying to find one in a river in Canada. If I recall correctly they did get it on video for a few seconds. I know you don't buy into the whole fresh water deal, and I'm not sold on it either after you pointed out the problems with the cases that were recorded. But I don't think we know everything about sharks, and I do know of a few fish species that go from fresh to salt, so maybe some sharks can. Anyway, the Greenland shark would make more sense for the great lakes to me, but until I hear of a confirmed attack or a confirmed fishing catch, I'll stay skeptical.

The sentiment that all shark attacks are mistaken identity perhaps would help reduce fear mongering towards sharks but isn't true. I'm sure some of them actually are mistaken identity but most are not. They have pretty decent vision. It sucks for us that when they encounter something they think might be food or foe they close their eyes and explore with their teeth. They aren't indiscriminate killers and human/shark encounters that result in injury or death are thankfully somewhat rare. Most of the time you will never even know that you were approached by a shark.
@SharksHappen
@SharksHappen 2 года назад
I agree on the fear mongering. But i think if honest and people know these things happen they could normalize the behaviors in peoples minds like it is in mine. Not everyone is out to get sharks after an attack, and many feel there is conservation efforts needed to control populations. Great to have the discussion but how can you with no information. Umm, yeah since there are so few shark attacks reported, he can only do so many videos of the ones that have actually been reported. Also he said that he only does the ones from the 1900s to now, and they are on the big sharks, so on any attacks beforehand you’d have to do your own research unfortunately. On a side note, the ISAF only goes back as far as 1958, so any stories beforehand may not be very accurate.

Bull sharks can somehow regulate the levels of salt they need in their blood and they can adapt quickly to fresh water. As for the water being cold most sharks are able to regular the levels of nitrogen in their bodies to regular body temp. I'm not saying it would thrive well for long but bull sharks have been know to pop up in inauspicious places.
@SharksHappen
@SharksHappen 2 года назад
Salt retention does nothing to keep them from sinking. And studies show they get dehydrated in Brackish waters. Thrive is basically finished. Survive will be done when someone tests a bull in fresh water tank, weened slowly from salt. They will sink and die well before 500 ppm salinty or fresh water.

They were friends with a couple who owned a hotel on Treasure Island, which is where we stayed every year. My uncle liked to lay on a float and just let the waves carry him out quite a ways. He might be out there for an hour or longer and then he’d paddle back in. I remember the hotel owner telling my aunt that as soon as my uncle got back in to tell him to never do that again! That EVERY YEAR there were people that disappeared from shark attacks, but it was never reported in the news because it would kill the tourism!
