I have used Adobe Illustrator for the past 4 years, so I am not a beginner in this program, however I am new to After Effects. This video is apparently for 'Beginners' but I can tell you it is most certainly not for beginners. Jess is clearly familiar with both programs, and because of this, assumes that you are too. If you are a beginner in either program you will find it very overwhelming when many many things are assumed by Jess. Such as what colours to use, the dimensions of the page, the units of measurement used, shortcuts and what each button does. You are never given any dimensions for the image you are creating and are just supposed to eyeball it. This video took much longer than 1 hour to complete as I had to replay sections numerous times to catch Jess' quick, sudden movements. Jess also seemed to be figuring out steps as she went, which resulted in more work than necessary for both herself and the viewer. Along with jump-cuts which cut out important information, such as keeping the grey background separate from the sticker (which causes problems later on when you spin the image or create a 'sticker' animation). I did finish the video and end up with the desired result, but the journey was certainly not enjoyable or easy. Almost took me back to the frustration I felt during the last year of my Bachelor's Degree. Sometimes you are better just to teach yourself.
Hello... Thanks anyway... I think your Bachelor Degree did not teach you to be polite. Try a Master Degree. Make video is not easy, maybe other people managed to do what this video shows and helps them, why so much anger
Thanks for the heads up!! Esp detailing which part is missing 👍🏻 Helps w/ setting the right expectations for this vid. Gonna check out some absolute beginner 101 before coming back to this!! Just had a suuuper frustrating self learning with the donut blender video (was fuming 🙈🙈) 🤣 really can’t handle another one thts out of my reach so soon
If you import a file from illustrator, make sure to import it as a composition instead of footage because it will appear as one flat object which is not helpful.
From someone that isn't good at drawing.... she made me feel that I can create whatever I want from what I imagine. This has much value. I'll be closely related to her videos, and social media.
This was a super helpful tutorial!! I started using AE a couple years ago to make transition videos and fan edits, but this video introduced a whole new world of both AE and Ai to me. Thank you so much, and I can't wait to start making my own motion designs :))
As a complete beginner at adobe, I'm glad such accessible tutorials like these exist. It rlly helps to follow a professionals workflow as a guide. But it would have rlly helped to have keyboard shortcuts used on screen. I tend to get hardstuck very frequently on certain parts. Like the using the transform tool on the eye, couldn't figure out how ot what shortcuts used to drag out on top and bottom points at the same time. And just resorted to using the anchor tool manually on all points.
i appreciate you making this but found it difficult to keep up. Our illustrator layouts don't look the same so it would have been nice to make sure ours looked the same when beginning. I appreciate you treating me like i know what I'm doing but I don't and thats why I was watching this tutorial. Also found it difficult to keep pace without knowing what buttons you are clicking. Some other tutorials include a graphic in the button left or right that indicate if a key is being clicked so we can follow short cuts.
Thanks for the feedback on this one, we're working on some more beginner motion design tutorials and always want to make sure we're doing our best to get the methods across so I'll take this on board and we'll try to spell things out a bit more on the next one! As someone currently learning, is there anything that you're really keen to get more of an understanding of when it comes to motion design?
When I started AE, AI, PS and the rest, I bought keyboard covers for each program. They've got all the hot keys and shortcuts on them, color coded. Used them for years. It really doesn't take long before even four-key shortcuts are unconscious though. Most useful key for tutorials, however, is the space bar. Try that first.
I'm struggling to make the hand where there are gaps in the fill layer. And you just happened to skip that bit of the tutorial.. Not sure why lol. Any help would be appreciated!
I’m new to AE & animation and your process appears quite intricate. How you go thru the process and explain all of it in only an hour is just incredible! It’s gonna take me hours to learn each cog in the wheel, but you explained everything in such good detail - thanks!!
I used Illustrator for quite some years so it was easy to follow thru but Im a total noob to AE and I find it hard to follow thru, really losing my mind here
This is one of the best graphics/animation tutorials I've seen in a while. Great and direct explanations, happy tone and no self-centered advertisements. This is awesome!
fellow australian this is awesomeeeeeeeeeeee the tools are so cohesive and powerful now, makes me excited to apply animation to things im working on ! thanks im working on using illustration in design as a graphic designer- but i notice 3d and animation trends are hitting and its something i always liked back in school but it was not nearly as accessible for me
This is great but it feels more like a follow along than a tutorial, and most follow alongs always skip something seemingly minor but end up frustrating the hell out of me when I try to imitate. Would love to see a hotkey displayer or something like that. Short story shorter: You're going to get frustrated
Omg! I really loved this tutorial, it is so clear and Jess is explaning step by step that there is no way to get lost! Thank you so much, for such valuable content, I learned a lot! ❤
It seems common practice for Ae tutorials not to show how to export your file, do I use the render tab in after effects or do I export using Media Encoder? How do I get the transparent background? Your tutorial, like most similar tutorials leave the beginner wondering what now.
Genuinely speaking , I am a professional graphic designer and a video editor ....... I was looking for a vid to get me started with motion graphics ....This was hands down the best one I have seen
thanks for creating this video. however this definitely is not a beginners video because there is not enough teaching on the fundamentals of how things work in a true beginners video. But I'll subscribe and look out for your future content and I look forward to it.
Cool and helpful tutorial, but one think i missed. And I think its really important... How can I export my Animation? How can I export an Movie /GIF or what ever?
Love the video! Just one question, wouldn't it be best to change all the AI files into vector shapes in AE straight away? Is there a particular reason for leaving the files as illustrator files in the animation? Thanks x
Such a great tutorial!!! I started using AE only a year ago and haven't worked in it in a bit, this was a great refresher and I learned new stuff too. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Everything is awsome, but please get rid of those creaking intonations in your voice, sometimes they are just terribly annoying, and it's difficult to perceive what you say((
Great tutorial! Thank you! Here are two things that I know for sure: I will learn or I will fall in love. Or maybe both. No matter, I will start following you!
Drawing eyes: creating layers for animation --> in this part I can't do it. every time I pull the shape down after pressing E, the shape is not the same as in the video. the shape is not oval but flat. can you provide a solution?
Hi! This might help: Selection: Make sure you have the shape selected before using the Transform tool. Constrain Proportions: When you pull the shape to scale it, hold down the Shift key. This constrains the proportions, ensuring the shape remains oval and doesn't get flattened. Transform Panel: For precise control, you can use the Transform panel (Window > Transform). Here, you can input exact width and height values to maintain proportions. Direct Selection Tool: If the shape still doesn't look right, use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to adjust the individual anchor points of the shape. Undo and Try Again: If you make a mistake, use Ctrl + Z (Windows) or Cmd + Z (Mac) to undo and try again. Cheers!
my shape builder tool is not working. please help me...i don't know why.. its not working, but when i select the tool it shows me the arrow with a no symbol circle... is that mean i can't use this tool in my pc?
I am a newbie who is curious about graphics and animation and would like to do it myself. This video gives me an initial insight into the logic of the process. I'm glad to receive valuable information, thanks a lot for sharing!💯👍👍👍
The masking didn't work. The image looks hazy cuz of the texture on top of it after I clicked multiply. What do I do? i used an image downloaded from Pinterest.
I nearly didn't watch this because the subject, a very bright ghastly label, was not at all appealing. (I'm a 69 year old nerd. I hope to use Ai (etc) for much more subtle, maybe technical, designs.) HOWEVER: I'm so glad I watched. I learned so much. 👍 You should get commission from Adobe as I'm about to buy their stupidly expensive CCloud. Your coverage of Ai -> Ae is great and has made me much less scared of Ae. You've got the usual comments from people who are too lazy to pause or go back a few seconds. The pace is completely subjective to the person watching. I'm not a beginner, but I have used Ai very little - the pace was right for me. It's tempting to criticise the style of the workflow/presentation - I don't think I'll be working like that, but it's always good to see how someone else works and works very effectively. I've been looking for Ai tutorials for technical drawing (diagrams etc), but there seems to be very little available - suggestions welcome 🤓. Many (many) years ago I found Ai so frustrating that it didn't work like CorelDraw 😆.
