Motivational Interviewing (MI) for Addictions Video 

It's really good that we learn MI to avoid making the patients feel overwhelmed by us (the loads of information that we give) and by the health-damaging behaviors that they do (that they haven't thought to be damaging at all).

As a Psychology and SW student this is wonderful and empowering for the client.

In this video, the client is an actor. If you watch the entire video, I guarantee you will find it extremely informative! We do use real clients in many of our training videos, but they are of course fully aware that they are being filmed, have signed a full consent form, and are aware that the videos will be used for training purposes.

A great video. Helps people with listening to people and everyone. It was suggested to watch this for a class. The teacher is really great. We could all just be helpful. Have a great and safe day. Peace.

@TheJahful why concentrate on finding fault? The content is what is most important. This is not a clinical session, it is produced for purposes of informing the public. The notebook will be used in an actual session, confidentiality is always foremost in a clinician's mind. The person in the video is an actor playing a part (based on a real person). What is important is the technique the interviewer is using and how it can be a powerful tool in treatment.@PsychotherapyNet is totally correct. Please ignore the trappings and setting and focus on the subtlety of the technique and its results.

I'd say this demonstrates the higher potentials of motivational interviewing. I assume we're seeing the fruits of years of practice here - it's inspiring.

I don't really see that many signs of affirmation, nudging the conversation towards change talk, constructing a decisional balance, measuring readiness and confidence for change, trying to formulate a commitment, or really just in general, without looking at MI in particular, the capacity for an interviewer to make the interviewee comfortable. The most particular lesson from MI that I think applies in particular to risky behavior such as drinking, is the idea of capitalizing on personal risk. So, say she brings up friends that are shocked, she herself has identified a personal risk with which you can evoke change talk. For example, this would've given the opportunity to ask, how does this affect your relationship with friends? This is extremely useful in order to shift the decisional balance which you can then use to start exploring the client's readiness for change. I don't feel like this is motivational interviewing here, it more or less feels like just letting the client talk with little to no guidance at all. There's no steering in the form of change talk and commitments, which makes it feel entirely afloat rather than gently guided. Also, the lack of general affirmation or an attempt to match the verbal register towards a setting that makes a client comfortable, such as a more intimate, lower-pitched, softer voice, less formal and distanced language, and less stiff and literal reflections on what the client said. It is truly a learning tool to have such interviews posted online, as any kind of psychological interviewing is not often a shared process and doesn't benefit from the same kind of widespread "attack" in terms of differentiation and optimization that, for example, various forms of content creation do.
