In this video I look at a common starting issue for high mileage Moto Guzzi 750 Brevas. It can often take several attempts to get the starter to turn over after a few years. This is caused by a combination of a long wiring run and wear and tear on switches, connectors and the starter motor.

Mike, thank you very much for this video from Russia from Vologda))) I was happy to do it like you did, but I couldn’t insert the fuse, just a wire. Your version is much more beautiful than in most videos where the wire is cut and wrapped with electrical tape. Huge gratitude!

Great instruction on this very easy and necessary mod - well done. Crazy that the design is exactly the same as the Breva's grandpa, the V50, which came out in 1977! And they wonder why Italian bikes have suffered from having a reputation of bad electrics. Same with the Headlights etc, I fitted relays to mine to reduce the voltage drop.

I've had this issue with my Breva 750 in the past, but since fitting a new battery it hasn't occurred again. I know that owners have tried a variety of 'fixes' for this, so it would be interesting to see if yours stands the test of time. Thanks for your nice channel Mike.

I checked, and it seems the person I purchased it off has done the mod you outline here. So I guess, the next steps are to check the battery, the connections, and then the starter motor itself. Thanks again for a very informative session. Regards, Arthur

Great video as always Mike thanks . I had this problem on my Norge 1200 and I done it like this with the insulated inline fuse holder with 2.5 mm wire I went with a large type blade fuse and I used 25 amp fuse . It's fixed now . I say don't wait for your guzzi to start acting up you could be miles from home I was lucky it was in the shed when it starts click no start . I was lucky you might not be . Don't delay fix it before it catches you out in the middle of the night miles from anywhere with no phone coverage .

Hello Mike first of all many thanks for the video. I would like to ask you if this procedure can be replicated in Breva V11 from 2011. I have the same problem and I would like to try your procedure before trying a mechanic. Thank so much for you helpful videos. Wish you the best of lucks. My very best regards from Portugal

Hi Mike I have the same issue with my V50 Monza. Tried yesterday to fix by fitting a 4mm fused wire to tab 30 (Bosch relay) then fitted a 4mm earth straight to battery. The result was a bike that cranked when you turned on the ignition. I then realised my mistake and refitted the wires with new spades on them. Problem still persists. Do I fit the fused power wire to no 30 and leave the bike to switch the relay through the starter button?

Thank you for the video Mike, the simple terms and clear instructions are the ticket for those of us with limited knowledge and skills. A question-- can I use the wire you heat taped as a switched wire for accessories? Just need the proper male connector? Thanks again!
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 3 года назад
I can't see why not if you keep the current draw within limits. That circuit is fused at 10amps and only has the starting interlock relays in it I think.

Mike I have a 2003 Breva, bought it second hand back in 2011, it came with an extra cable which runs from the relay which is in the same row you show except from the opposite end, goes to the + terminal, I´ve never had the clic problem and don´t want to touch it, just curious which relay is the one it comes from, thanks.

Hi, Mike . Like your videos very much as you deliver the info, clear and to the point, none of that annoying side tracking that so many are guilty of especially the American's . I have just bought a really nice 2005 Navada 750 with only 13000 miles on the clock and it has that starter switch clicking problem so I will try your direct wire solution and hope it cures it? The other problem it has, is the recorded mileage is no longer showing ,any suggestions ???? Dave,

Hi Dave, in regards to the odometer. I assume that the display is in the right mode (you can toggle it through odometer, trip, temp & clock) with the button under the red hazzard button. If not it might be an electronics fault.
@davidrennicks2484
@davidrennicks2484 2 года назад
@@MikesMachines Mike thank you for your prompt reply. Yes it looks like its a fault with the electronics ? I've also solved the starter problem by having the starter motor overhauled with a new solenoid fitted. I have one other major problem now that i have got it running and that is the two large wires (one green,/red & a white/red ) that go from the battery to the starter and then into the loom are getting very HOT , the higher the rev's the hotter they get? I am getting a reading of around 14.7 vol at this lead at about 2500 rpm ? I have removed the tank, body work and have looked at all the switches, etc, but I can not find out where this two wires go to ??? The only think I haven't found is the wiring coming from the alternator / dynamo ? I have not got a wiring diagram for this bike 2007 Navada 750 and the only type that I can find on the net is a dvd which I have on order from Australia ? As you may have guessed electrics are not me strong point as more at home with the mechanical side of things . I do hope you don't mind me bothering you like this , but I am bit lost and want to get this lovely machine on the road before the summers past! Any light you can shine on this would be very much appreciated . Are you a Guzzi club member? I will join up in the near future. Regards David.

The Green & Red wire goes to the voltage regulator (alternator circuit). The White & Red goes to the fuse box which powers the lights, fuel injection etc. These wires will probably get warm. This site has both owners manuals and service manuals for the Nevada series (a wiring diagram is in the owners manual). With luck one will cover your bike. www.thisoldtractor.com/moto_guzzi_small_blocks.html

I had a similar problem and it turned out that the inlet manifold bolts were loose. Valve clearances can also effect low speed and idle running. Throttle body balance if done incorrectly can be a culprit too. It's a long shot but if your neutral light switch is dodgy and the side stand is down it can cut the ignition intermittently.

Thanks for that, very informative. I have a current similar problem, but rather than one click and no turnover, I get rapid clicks till I release the engine start button. The person I bought the bike off had set up his own direct relay to both the starter and lights - I'm hopeless with electricals so have not been able trace what he did, nor can I contact him. Any ideas on how to proceed? I know MPH, in America, market a reasonably cheap upgrade, but I think they leave the cabling to the switch in place. Thanks again, Arthur
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 2 года назад
Rapid clicks is usually a sign of a flat battery. You could try jump starting the bike from another battery to check.

Hi Mike, found your clip after my 1200 norge let me down, lucky to still be in the shed and not out on the road. Anyway I followed your instructions but as soon as I try to reconnect battery the bike wants to roar into life, with the ignition turned off? I'm thinking is it the relay, regardless of your fix, it's like it's a direct hot wire so is something weird going on inside the relay with the contacts? I'm guessing that what I'm experiencing isn't a first. Cheers

Hi Sean, It sounds like it is wired wrong. The wiring for the Norge is different to the Breva so the colour codes may not match..

Just search for "inline fuse" or "fusible en ligne" on ebay. They are available in a range of types and wire sizes.

@MikesMachines

The hot start issue on early 1130 TnTs was caused by tight tolerances. There were a number of factory updates to fix this including the Z25 gear. The Benelli forum is the place to ask. www.benelliforum.com

This sounds like a wiring issue. I assume that the bike is a 750 Breva? If not the wire colours and relay position may be different. You will need a multimeter to go through the starting circuit to confirm that power is getting to each stage.
@louismartin4446

How do you determine which is the correct relay?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 2 года назад
The starter relay is the one at the rear of the bike under the seat. The colour coding of the wires on the plug should confirm that you have the right one.

@@MikesMachines Thanks for your reply Mike. My 2012 V7 Racer has a different array and position of relays. (on RS under seat and there are 4, 2 of which are identical). Can you tell me if the relay you are talking about is 4 pin or 5? and what colour wiring should the direct battery Pos be fed to (assuming of course the wiring colours are the same on my bike?) Thx
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 2 года назад
@@louismartin4446 Looking at the circuit diagram for the 2013 model (assuming that it is the same) the colour codes for the 4 wires to the starting relay are as follows. Green & Red, Purple, Green & Red, Blue & Green. The purple wire goes to the starter (pin3) and is supplied by one of the green & red wires (pin 5). You can find the wiring diagram here assuming it is applicable to your 2012 V7. I hope this helps! www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzi007/schematics/2013_V7_Series.gif

@@MikesMachines Hi Mike, Thanks again for your assistace. I, too, found this electric diagram but I don’t think it refers fo my 2012 v7 racer as this diagram does not show a 5 pin relay l only 4 x 4 pin. The fuse ratings are also different. I also found a 2008 V7 classic diagram but it too had different components and fuse ratings. I dis not want take a chance and risk frying some components. Guzzi parts take a long time to order. I will continue my search for the correct wiring diagram or try to understand the differences between my components and the colour codes on the diagram you attached. Your help is much appreciated.

@MikesMachines 2 года назад
@@louismartin4446 Pity it's different but you should be able to use a multimeter to trace the lead from the starter motor to the appropriate relay.
