Time for another update on the ongoing Check Engine Light issue with my Moto Guzzi V7 850 Special. I've had a response from Moto Guzzi and I'm not entirely convinced by it...

Sorry you're still having trouble. My 2022 V7 Special also had the check engine light on after 40 miles. I took it to the dealer and the issue was the electrical connector had come loose on the temperature sender. The dealer pushed the connector back on the sender and problem solved. My dealer also said that the US and Europe have different ECU MAPS. Perhaps the US ECU MAP is more lenient in regards to engine specifics? If you could get a technician to flash your ECU with the US MAP it would be interesting to see if that would fix the problem?

A shame. I have the exact same motorbike, and haven't had a single issue in two years of ownership. The dealership also said that they had a few issues with previous generations, but absolutely none with the current one. Not sure what the issue is with this particular bike. I do live in Canada though, not in Europe.

I do not believe the issue is with this particular problem. It is with the non service being provided by Moto Guzzi. This is more than enough reason for me not to purchase another bike from them. Yes, I do have another V7 now that I bought new in 2017, and was thinking of buying a new one, but will let it pass until I learn real service is available should amn issue occur. @@AlexisMontreal

Thanks for the update. On a recent week long tour my check engine light came on. I also developed a few other issues, throttle sticking, and cold starting problems. Like you said, is the light hiding other issues. As the riding season comes to an end here in NY/NJ area I will get the bike in for service. Rubber side down !

I got my V7 special in May. Within 400 mile the check engine light came on. I brought back to the dealer and the have to have Piaggio reed the code. We found out it was the ABS module. The dealer had the bike for three weeks and I made many call to Piaggio directly. Finally the dealer took the part from another bike for me, just to get me back on the road. As of today the dealer still hasn’t reserved the replacement part. For my troubles Piaggio extended my warranty for another year.

Bought a V7 850 special new on 1st October this year. 220 miles glitch free. Saddle says it was made May 2022 so clearly a more recently built bike. Before buying I test rode 2022 model V7 stone and TT85 with 600 and 900 miles respectively on the clocks and neither showed any EML so if it is a software thing then it looks as if the later models have been resolved. Anyway good luck getting it resolved as they are a lovely bike. 👍🏻

I have a V85TT Euro5, the fuelling was very poor, I fitted a V Twin Boost which did improve the running but still not as good as I’d like it to be so 2 weeks ago I had the annual service and my dealer said it had 2 ECU software updates and now runs as it should. I know my issue is different but hopefully the new software is now available for the V7 850cc and resolves your bike issue!

I think you will be disappointed with the RE (I was). Just feels like a bit of a lump compared to the V7. I bought the blue Special in the end. Much (much) prettier too. 6,000km later and it hasn't missed a beat. I currently have six bikes and I think the V7 will be the last I part with (I"m getting on a bit).

@@DavidRHill23 Thanks for that David. I have test ridden both and I preferred the Guzzi as a riding experience. However you have to be realistic and consider the possibility of something going wrong. CG's dismal experience with Moto Guzzi's after-sales service has completely put me off. His point about the false warning light hiding a real fault is well made. A friend who owned a Stelvio had electrical trouble and also ran into customer care problems although I was never sure whether that was down to Moto Guzzi or the dealer. The RE dealer is a lot nearer where I live and has a good reputation for customer service so for me the Interceptor is a much safer bet.

I've been waiting for a lock set for my 2021 V7III Stone since the beginning of June. None available in the UK, so have it on order from Italy. Luckily we found an Aprillia 125 ignition switch was more or less identical and only cost £35, delivered the next day, compared with the £210 for a full Guzzi set.

I had a similar issue with my functionally identical 2021 Stone earlier this year after about 1000 miles. I did experience a misfire when the light came and although the misfire disappeared the warning light didn't. Long story short I called Moto Guzzi and my local dealer to whom the bike was recovered. It took 5 weeks for Guzzi in Italy to produce a map that works (the bikes now at 2500 miles with - fingers crossed - no further occurrences). There was an amount of swapping out of parts first before the map solution. Apparently Piaggio group use the same ECU on most of their range, but it's mapped differently for each model. Like you I don't understand why the issue affects some bikes but not others.

I had the same support issue with v-strom1000 spokes corroding- original dealer went bust without doing anything, Suzuki UK said go away, Suzuki dealer (Haselmere) who didn't know me from Adam took it on, got the spokes replaced under warranty- no fuss, no drama, just got it done.

Thanks for the update. By "imminent" for the update, if this goes on long enough you will have a bike you can't ride as the engine light is an MOT failure. As for your options, you would be more than within your rights to reject the bike for a full refund. I know that it's a rather drastic measure, but it might be the only thing left to do? If you bought the bike on finance (including PCP) you might want to get in touch with them too. Do this soon though as your rights diminish as time goes on. Such a shame, gorgeous bike. Good reaction to the silver car by the way! We really have to ride expecting this to happen don't we?
@CGRidesMotorcycles
@CGRidesMotorcycles Год назад
I’m close to the six month limit for rejection under the Consumer Rights Act. The big problem with those rights is that they exist between the retailer and you, rather than the manufacturer. At least, that’s how I understand it. Also, after the first month they are entitled to deduct an amount for fair wear and tear (for the mileage they told me to put on it 🙄). Since the dealer went bust, it would be difficult and stressful to pursue. I wish I had bought on finance!! Lots of elderly drivers round here - I’ve learned to be very cautious!! 😁

I have a "September 2022" Aprilia Tuareg 600. (Piaggio Group.) In common with a lot of other motorcycles identical to mine, there is a fault in the map that kills the engine for a 10th of a second every now and again under steady throttle conditions. No CEL thankfully! Aprilia have released a new map and cured this fault on every machine that has had the new map, so it is possible to do these fixes. My bike will get the new map on first service mileage. I commend you on your perseverance and have my fingers crossed that you get a satisfactory outcome. 👍

A well respected family bike dealer near me decided to drop the Piaggio franchise. Their lack of support meant that some (valid) warranty claims were not upheld by Piaggio so this meant the dealer had to fix problems at their own expense rather than risk reputational damage. In the end it became too much sadly 😔

I've had the same issue, rode it for 3 weeks (400) miles then the light came on and engine ran erratically. It went back to the dealership who had it for 9 weeks, I picked it up on Friday and it seems ok. To keep it brief they changed multiple sensors and the ECU to no avail. After asking for my money back they finally pulled their finger out. The tech there said that he had read of your problem and the letter. After a final remap on Thursday the issue was resolved. He reckoned that Motoguzzi have updated the software regarding the light. I'm hoping that it's sorted, it has ruined the experience with the bike. I wish I had bought the Enfield Continental. You're not alone, I bought a royal enfield new that does the same, check engine light on, reset, then comes back on. They say keep riding as it doesn't mean anything, their demo bike did the same, it's not a real fault just a sensor being too sensitive. Apparently, a new map is out that fixes it now. I took a different view though and am just enjoying my bike, it doesn't bother me as the bike is running well and I bought a OBD reader to check the same code is thrown up every now and then. Such a shame that a light can ruin your enjoyment. I hope it gets fixed for you. By the way, these guzzi's are great lookers and might even be in my future to replace my triumph.

I love moto guzzis but the only way to deal with this is not to buy their bikes and tell the dealers loud and clear that this is not good enough. Will MG fail as a result, no but if everyone does his then somebody might start to think about their customer and dealer support. Not good is it. I won’t be buying a new one anytime soon. It’s not good enough to just say oh well they are a bit unorganised. My mate had a Laverda sf750 in the 1970,S when they had three dealers in all of Australia, it had a big end bearing failure, the only one ever known, what did the old school dealer do? Shipped the engine to Slater bros in the UK to have it analysed and sorted. Within weeks it was back, fitted ; free of charge, and the reason explained ( pinched oil breather pipe fitting) now that was service, so , it can be done if those responsible have the guts and mind set to act.

I am sorry to see you are still having the same problem. I would also be concerned that the always on EML could mask any number of other real issues. I wonder if the same problem affects the V7 Stone version? A few weeks ago i bought the same model as you have and so far the light has stayed off. I would have expected, in the time that has passed since you raised the issue, that the readout from the bike would have been examined and that you would be told what component is causing the EML to remain on. In short - "what the trouble code says". Most "check engine" warnings on cars are for failing of emmission control components. In many countries to continue to drive with an EML showing is illegal due to the emmissions rules. I don't think UK motorcycles are subject to the same rules as cars as motorcycles are not yet emmissions tested. Hence all the bikes that are de cat.

My new Moto Guzzi V7 850 was fine until the first service where the union holding the oil filter cover to the engine casing was found to be cross-threaded in the factory. This is located on the sump. Once the filter cover was opened by the dealer the thread stripped. I was told I would need a new engine having only covered 900 miles. I complained bitterly. I really wanted to hand the bike back having lost faith in the machine. Mysteriously the problem previously requiring a new engine seemed to be easily fixed with a replacement union. Whether the engine casing was not damaged after all or there was enough thread left to hold a new union in place I suppose I’ll find out if the engine leaks oil or the problem recurs at the next service. There was no way to discuss the problem with MG/ Piaggio.. They didn’t address my wish to return the bike. I don’t even have any correspondence about the issue. A dismal experience. I understand your frustration.

Ouch! The big problem with the consumer rights is that they exist between you and the retailer, not the manufacturer. It seems like some brands are taking advantage of this fact. MG need to up their customer service game. My suspicion is that they are under-staffed in that department rather than simply not caring. You only have to look at the bikes to see that they are passionate about their product… you’d think they would want to stand behind it. It’s not like Piaggo have empty pockets for these rare issues.

My Euro 4 V85TT has been completely reliable. I did hear of fault codes happening on the Euro 5 bike due to interference from the ignition leads and the new sensor location, but I'm pretty sure that got sorted early on. The only snag I've had with mine was a squeak in the rear shock due to insufficient grease in the bearings - I sorted that out myself, but the newer model has an updated spec which resolves that. Sorry to hear about your issues, it's very frustrating and takes away from that new bike experience. The V7 special is what I would go for, I prefer the look of the analog gauges to the other V7 models but I also like the paint scheme of the "centenario" version too. Not sure that dealers in the UK are any better or worse than dealers in the US, I've dealt with them in both countries. The differences seem to be in what the law will do to assist you. I left the UK many years ago and now live in Southern California, California has a fairly good "lemon" law whereby a dealer/manufacturer can be forced to take back the vehicle or replace it if it's had the same issue three times and prevented you from using your property. Other states here have different interpretations of it, some don't have it at all. Did u check into the UK consumer protection act? Not sure if that would help you or not, I've been gone a long time. I suspect that Guzzi are well aware of the issue and that it only affects a certain batch of sensors or a specific V7 production date run but they do not want to issue a recall and will do a "fix on fail" if the issue rears it's head. Best of luck with it, I hope you can get it resolved soon. Did you assume that your bike will have already had the update because of the date you purchased it, or has one of your dealers actually connected your bike to the diagnostic kit and confirmed it? As former technician and after sales manager for the Piaggio group brands I feel your frustration. Just my 2 cents here; Regarding your comments on the hardware, there are always manufacturing tolerances there, and these tolerances could add up and create dynamic issues in certain conditions. And having these big lumps of an engine perform to Euro5 standards is quite amazing - but I can also see how the slightest of imperfect fueling could cause the CKP-sensor to read an error. But as you said, this could probably be fixed with a filtering of that sensor in the software. A good example if this is Aprilia RSV4 from around 2017, they had issues with the key switch, or rather that the ecu aknowledged an off signal from the switch and therefore turned everyhing of briefly. This was just a microsecond of input and nothing was actual wrong with key switches (according to the spec that it was manufactured to at least) So Aprilia implemented a programming that only allowed "key off" functionality after a certain length of signal input, i.e if it was just a few milliseconds long of a signal nothing happend. If it was longer then the ECU switched off. And an error message for this was logged but not triggering an check engine light. I'm not sure of this but my theory is that the maps for EURO5 are quite heavily controlled in the homologation process, more so than before. And making a change to the RPM-signal filtering might have a big impact for overall fuelling (or no real effect at all). So my theory is that it might be a quite extensive job to R&D this matter all over again for MG. They are quite clever engineers in Noale, but they are limited in amount of staff so I can see that this could be quite an issue for them to solve quickly. In earlier years I know these types of issues have been sorted quickly in an Italian matter; just creating a map where the error doesn't get triggered as easily 😊 But this was before EURO5 and I think they'd be braking some laws by doing such a solution these days (i.e Volkswagen dieselgate) On a dealer level I did my self use the US maps for some Aprilias to try and solve similar issues in the past. But if my memory serves me correctly P.A.D.S got more selective on what maps that could be downloaded, just to avoid a "dieselgate"-possible scenario. Also some hardware on the bikes are, sometimes, different comparing a EU mapping vs US mapping, so other codes could be triggered... I just wanted to shine a light on that it might be far mor complex then just writing a new code and sending the map out. I'm sure the engineers knows exactly what the issue is, but solving it within the parameter of the EURO5 homologation is my guess as to why it's taking longer time than one would like it to... But the customer service aspect is still a point of annoiance... I've been dealing with those HelpDesk tickets going unanswered too... This was ALWAYS a sign of a bigger problem needing some engineering and investigating, but what they then do is that they totally ghost you and you stand without any info to pass on to the end customer... I learned the right channels to bypass the official ways and then could get some of the record info so I could have some sort of dialouge with the customer affected. But you didn't want to missuse those channels either, any "under the cover" info that popped up on an forum somewhere ment thar channel was burnt... This is just to get you some insight in how it could work behind the scenes, at least back when I was working after sales. This is just shed some light and that your dealers might be working there *sses off to help you but sometimes there would simply just be silence in return from the factory. Also the factory could be working superhard on the issue and fully aknowledging your issues - but not communicating it properly... So seeing your video here I see that communication skills is still something they need to work on... But hang in there, the V7's are lovely bikes (had one my self) so this will get sorted and you'll have many wonderful, troublefree, miles on it in the end I'm sure 😊

I thought the same about the MOT - it’s definitely true for cars, but I haven’t been able to find any reference to it in the motorcycle MOT test. 🤷🏼‍♂️ It is a big concern, so I’d like to know for sure!

@@CGRidesMotorcycles Best advice is carry a print out of the email from MG that states the motorcycle is road worthy.

@CG rides. If possible I would remove the bulb just before an MOT is required. otherwise if it were knocked back your bike would be worthless

According to 8.2. 2.2. (g) of the MOT Fail Codes An engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or engine management light (EML) that is inoperative or indicating a malfunction is a "major" defect and will result in a fail.
@CGRidesMotorcycles
@CGRidesMotorcycles Год назад
@@mox3603 8.2.2.2 (g) is from the Car and Passenger Vehicle MOT Inspection Manual. There is no equivalent check in the Motorcycle manual that I can see, which leads me to believe it's not actually a failure for a motorcycle. That also may explain why MG can take their sweet time about fixing it.

In cold and humid weather that seems to be a common problem with italian bikes.

@@CGRidesMotorcycles I plan on selling my E5 V7 as soon as I return from my extended vacation. I do not want the warranty expiring before this gets resolved. I've never owned a new bike with these kind of issues. Completely unacceptable. It's a shame, too, because I love the way it rides. I had considered getting a V100 Mandello, and though it is water-cooled, I think this experience has soured my desires for any other Moto Guzzi. Once bitten, twice shy.

Moto Guzzi certanly have a very interesting way of doing business. Their customer support is just rubbish. I ended up selling my very beautiful California Touring that was unreliable just one too many times and buying a brand new Indian Springfield.

Although it’s a technical problem the biggest issue for me, after watching your story is the contempt suffered. You parted with good money and got fobbed off. I have been watching very expensively produced ads for the new Mandello. I’d like one but after hearing this sorry tale I think I’ll avoid. I wish they spent a tiny bit of that ad money on actually making your bike right as it’s now wasted on me. I hope you get it sorted but they really are a shocking, slack bunch.

3 repairs for the same issue, 6 total repairs or 30 days out of service..invoke the lemon law, they have to return your money or replace the bike completely.

We don't have that law in the UK unfortunately. We have consumer rights, which exist with the dealer/retailer (now bust) not the manufacturer. Moto Guzzi has fixed it now and given me an extra year's warranty and roadside assistance. I believe the delay was due to emissions homologation requirements for the new software. MG is just hopeless at communicating with its customers.

Hi,i am Sorry...

The bike has been flashed with the new update, and the light is off so far, but thanks to the weather and all the salt that’s been spread on the roads, I’ve not done many miles. I will get out and film an update as soon as everything dries up… salt + this bike doesn’t seem like a wise combination to me!!

If they can't advance beyond a pushrod v twin design that's ancient, why would anyone trust them with ecu's and modern day electronics? It's a handsome bike, but Italian character is something I'm happy to live without!

Food for thought : A) worry, stress and disappointment is a creation of your mind. Moto Guzzi have you covered in the event of major damage or problems developing due to the red light being on and excluding any other warnings. Your bike is a loverly retro style bike so divorce your concerns and enjoy it to the full! B) I am not a guzzi rider, 2 x Royal Enfields, Ural side car and a Triumph Bobber, all retro style bikes in the man cave but no modern Guzzi bikes. However i discovered and followed CG Rides and have brought your adventure to the attention of many others. This posting is but three days old and has 4128 views! That's at least 4000 potential bike people up to date on how stupid the PR department at Moto Guzzi are and says volumes for the tech department! Someone deserves a pineapple with a boot behind it. Please keep us posted but enjoy your ride!
