@@TimWilborne I have a crank with magnets on its pulley. The magnets are turning around a 6 pole 18 slots stator that charges a 12v battery after going through a rectifier that keeps the voltage controlled since the crank turns 12,000rpm. I was thinking about rewinding the stator into a hub motor adding a second battery and a controller in order to recharge the 12v battery and the 2nd battery and also drive the crank or boost its torque when I flip a switch for 10 seconds. Will this work? What are the main difficulties of such system?

I think the motor gets a little hot and self disconnects the hall sensor? does this pole count make the motor run hot ? when it works it is a most wonderful scooter for about 30 seconds . then have to wait for it to cool down to reset . any thoughts would be very welcome ! thanks !

I have disassembled multiple Baldor motors; both 1800 and 3600 rpm and I noticed that that the 3600 rpms use a lot more wire in the windings ( which take more space) and as a consequence the rotor's diameter has to be smaller. On the 1800 rpm motors the rotor is bigger and there's less wire use for the windings. Could anybody explain why? I'm just curious as to why that is the case. Each comparison was made using motors being the same HP and having the same physical size.
@troubleshooter1975
@troubleshooter1975 Год назад
The 1800RPM (1725) have all those windings in SERIES (AFAIK), thus to TOTAL bulk winding volume is about the same AFAIK. (it is just getting split, distributed among more locations around the circle... I'm not sure about the smaller rotor size: but there are two things maybe going on there: In the 3450 RPM induction motor, the armature field is going THROUGH THE CENTER, and in the 1725 RPM motor it is going in 4 'semi-circles', sort of 4 arcs. thus a longer distance (larger rotor) will separate the stator's adjacent poles more, to go through enough metal in the rotor before exiting the rotor again to another(s) other pole... You mentioned Baldor, and the video is implying inductions motors, so he didn't include slip in the discussion. Only synchronous motors run at the calculated values (motors with a PM rotor or defined discrete poles). On an induction motor, the magnetization occurs anywhere around the surface, and is generated by currents 'induced' by the slippage. (if it didn't slip, the rotor would NOT be magnetized into poles!). Standard '3600rpm' motors have a slip of 150rpm (relative) giving 3450 RPM speed. Standard '1800rjpm' motors slip 75rpm yielding 1725 RPM operation... Mr K L [ I apologize if others already said this, no time to look; I'm working on Taxes LOL]

How about for a 6-phase 3-pole motor? I'm a little confused as I thought the poles where how many windings the motor has. I was trying to use the equation for this fan. It looked like 6-pole thermalbench.com/2016/10/31/be-quiet-silent-wings-3-140-mm-high-speed-fan/ On page two it says "These fans use a new IC motor with a 6-phase, 3-pole design" but I have a feeling that is a typo and meant to say 6-pole 3-phase?

What happens if the hz are increased, say 200hz or more
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne 4 года назад
Motor speed is proportional to Hz. So if you have a base rpm of 1800 at 60 Hz then 1800*200/60 would be 6000 rpm. However your motor would burn up shortly after getting there if it even managed to. Torque falls off as Hz increases, bearings aren't rated for it, and the motor windings will overheat. I hope this was a philosophical question.

Awesome that's what I expected. Now the question is how does this relate to torque output. Does increasing the poles to reduce the rpm greatly effect the torque output due to less inertia?
@Zapgod
@Zapgod Год назад
Torque output requires higher current draw. In a 2 pole motor there will be gaps where flux is not at it peak due to the rise and fall of ac sinewaves. Torque is strongest around the center of each pole when energized. This area is called the torque angle. The more poles there are the more torque angles exist thus increasing torque. To achieve higher torque at 2 pole, the motor would have to be rebuilt to withstand the current draw i.e. increasing turns, wire gauge, wires on hand, redesigning for higher voltage, or wiring in delta; or a combination of each.

Why the MAX speed of an AC motor is 3600rpm (USA) and 3000rpm (europe) and why we don t speed up the motor to a high RPM if we want that, such as 6000rpm (100hz) or 7200rpm(120hz)and is this possible????Or maybe 3600rpm is the better RPM and we can t change that in USA or EU??? Hz is part of the RPM equation, so the lower 50 Hz will run at a lower RPM. See details at the following link. Why not 6000? Because the bearings wouldn't hold up. twcontrols.com/lessons/motor-poles-amp-rpm

Vacuum motor has brushes and no magnets. Motor sounds like 20 to 30 thousand rpm. Guess the magnets can't get to hot n loose guass strength all electro magnets. Seems the lower resistance windings lower amount of poles are faster. Takes alot of amperage to push there speed under heavy load though.

A lagging power factor won't affect the speed of an AC motor but as your motor is put under a higher demand you will get slip which is what is required to produce more torque. Both power factors and slip are fascinating subjects, I might have to come up with a creative way to show them.
