How to use a motorbike alternator to generate electricity from wind, water, steam, Tesla, or most other kinds of turbines.
Bike alts are about the easiest option to find in various parts of the world, but as they have no built in bearing they need to be mounted in order to spin.
I'll be showing you how to use a bicycle wheel hub for this purpose.
Check my channel for guides and tutorials on turbine designs that this can be used with.

Excellent video with a detailed presentation of how to proceed! I can easily envision a small scale power system that utilizes solar PV, wind turbine and water turbine to continuously generate power for a lithium ion battery bank. Strategy: capture as much free energy as you can whenever it is available, charge your battery bank and then use your stored power supply wisely until the next recharge period.
@OpenSourceLowTech
@OpenSourceLowTech 3 года назад
This is essentially exactly the approach with renewable energy in general; harvest abundance when you have it (sunny days, windy days, rainy months etc) and then store as much as possible to get you through the rest of the time.

@@OpenSourceLowTech hey buddy, im kinda new to this "free energy", IF i find a way to keep multiple water+wind turbine running 24/7, can i connect them to a 10k -15k inverter, make a water heater dump and light my house 24/7 ? without having batteries into the system ? because my country has no power grid, only mafia generators that are toooo damn expensive and barely give u 10 hours /24h electricity PS: Yep , its Beirut .
@OpenSourceLowTech
@OpenSourceLowTech 2 года назад
@@philipfeghaly4210 I am interested in options for not having to have batteries, but they are pretty useful. Even just a couple old car/truck ones to add capacitance into the system. It may be possible with hydro, since it's very stable and reliable (provided the water supply), but there'd be pretty much no chance with wind, as it's perpetually all over the place. You'd presumably want a lot of supply.

I know you’re shooting for low tech but some 3d printed collets could take all the guess work out of maintaining concentricity along the shaft. I’m really glad I found your system, it makes so much sense!

How do you mean?
@seabeepirate
@seabeepirate Год назад
@@OpenSourceLowTech it looks like there is a little bit of fiddling to keep the parts aligned along the axis, if you made a tapered collet the taper could handle alignment while the collet grips the other part evenly. If you’d prefer to avoid 3D printing parts you might be able to find collets from something readily available. Lots of machinining equipment use collets for concentricity but I’d bet there is another less expensive source.

Hey! Just pulled one of these off an old bike I found. If you dont have one of those flat wrenches for the cone nut, I found that it worked to bend a 2" framing nail into a horseshoe, pass it over one side of the cone nut into the flat grooves and grip it with some channel locks. Wrench or other grips on the second nut and it comes right off. The nail fits those groove sizes just the same and no special guy needed. 👍

Great idea, very good indeed. But if you want to minimize friction losses use a biciycle chain instead of a rubber belt because it produces huge drag. And the main problem is that with poor wind the belt is too heavy to start moving.
@OpenSourceLowTech
@OpenSourceLowTech 2 года назад
Chain is also definitely an option, and pretty easy to implement considering it's a bike wheel hub it's mounted to. But the issue is gearing, in that to get more than 5:2 from available sprocket sets you'd need to go multi stage, which can be a bit of a faff and introduce further losses. Using a bicycle wheel as the large pulley with a belt can give up to 12:1 in a single stage, tho it does have the other issues you state. This is all mostly an issue for wind turbines, hydro is usually higher revving and can often be gotten away with direct drive.

Wind and hydro usually make pretty compliments to solar, but a solar MPPT controller won't work well with wind, given its significant and constant fluctuations of voltage and amperage. MPPT wind controllers do exist, but are more expensive and complex. I've not yet tried plugging a hydro turbine into a solar MPPT, but I think it should maybe do a decent job given the stability of the output.

Where I am, I can more easily buy a car alternator. I imagine the reasoning with the motorcycle alternator is that in other locales like India, those are easier to come by. As a maker, I appreciate the brilliance of your design. But also I see a problem: if a car alternator is hard to come by, then so too will be the pulley.
@OpenSourceLowTech
@OpenSourceLowTech 24 дня назад
Car alts have a couple strengths; mainly high max output power and amperage, availability, and often having charge control built in. But the main drawbacks are they're pretty low on volts per rpm (so you have to spin them fast), not usually self energising, and low efficiency over all.

Hello Daniel, thank you for sharing this, i'm glad to see it's feasible. I'm still learning and seeing you really motivate me. I'm currently trying to plan/engineering something very similar to this in the purpose to make a little energie for my offgrid cabin with a beaver dam. ( 1.5 m of head). Hope it not sound too much crazy! Lot of water, but low pressure and freezing problem in canadian winter. I did not see the AC to DC converter, am assuming the output is AC since it's a motorcycle alternator. I assume a motorcycle alternator would be much more efficient than a car alternator at less RPM ? the car option is already somewhat mounted.. so ? what is best ? Before seeing your video, I was thinking to maybe rewire a car stator in a different gauge/size copper wire. I also wonder if the bicycle chain can work on a horizontal plan, or would it "derail"/fall ( sorry, I hope this word exact, English is not my mother tongue). I want to put a turgo wheel horizontally, so I can maximise the very low head I have. EDIT=> I've just seen the demonstration at the start ! =D thank On another subject/ idea, Do you think it's possible to reverse a small electric boat propeller to make it generate electricity ? > assuming the output is AC since it's a motorcycle alternator. Yeah they tend to be three phase AC, but can be single and some have the third coil as high voltage for the starter circuit. You'll need a basic bridge rectifier if you're plugging it into anything DC. > I assume a motorcycle alternator would be much more efficient than a car alternator at less RPM? Exactly that, yes. > the car option is already somewhat mounted.. so ? what is best ? I don't usually bother with car alts. They're about three times the power, but at about half to a third the volts per rev, and like you say not very efficient. Also quite heavy. > I was thinking to maybe rewire a car stator in a different gauge/size copper wire. Lot of work. > I also wonder if the bicycle chain can work on a horizontal plane You wouldn't want to string over too much of a distance, but if you can nestle the two sprockets closeish together then it should work fine in any orientation. > I want to put a turgo wheel horizontally, so I can maximise the very low head I have. You won't get much efficiency out of a Turgo at 1.5m head. My siphon turbine is meant for that kind of niche. > possible to reverse a small electric boat propeller to make it generate electricity? That's basically what my turbine is, but with a tube around it to generate more flow. A boat prop would I think be a more efficient runner shape, but the PSU fans a lot easier to source.

Yeah that should work fairly well as a low key kind of approach. Reg should manage the battery ok, but doesn't have load diversion so will just turn itself off and let the turbine free spin once the battery is charged, which may not be ideal. What is the best way to mount the alternator axially to your DIY water turbine?
@OpenSourceLowTech
@OpenSourceLowTech 2 года назад
Good question and not currently specifically sure, as still using the hoverboard wheels by default and this is the next option to trial. Essentially it just needs to physically attach such that the water weight hangs off the alternator bearings, and the shaft doesn't unwind out of whatever thread is being used. It does tho, like with the wingnut assembly on the current configuration with the HB wheel, need to involve a kind of universal joint type functionality, so that any misalignment between the axes of the alternator and drive shaft can be accommodated without vibration or flexing. So needs to be able to wiggle a little, basically.

@@OpenSourceLowTech Thank you for the quick reply. Is the hoverboard alternator a more efficient alternative to the motorcycle alternator? If so, I will simply go this route. Motorbike alts are fairly reasonable options, but the hoverboard wheels are more efficient, powerful, easy to work with, hard wearing, and weather proof. Often also cheaper, but the one key advantage of the bike alt is that you should be able to get it anywhere in the world, whereas the wheel is more just where there's people rich enough to purchase such items. Have you experimented with magnets? Or perpetual motion generators? I know they say it's impossible but just wondering if you have tried it and what your thoughts on it is?
@pm29c
@pm29c 2 года назад
Perpetual motion is a lie, clickbait only for innocent desinformed people. If you see any video claiming that don't click, just report it is all a lie, the machines have hidden cables and that is how they are being powered. Nothing has 100% efficiency and you need energy to run stuff. You can always use "free energy" like sunlight but never believe that a generator powering a mechanical screwdriver that is itself powering the generator like the generator had 100%+ efficiency. All power is finite and is some form of a pre-existing energy like batteries use chemical energy to provide voltage and power a lamp. Those perpetual motion generators loose energy do to friction (air friction also) and as such you always need to input some energy for them to rotate. You can also see they are a lie because when a load is connected they rotate at the same speed when in reality wen you apply a load to this type of generators they get harder to spin. There are a lot of good content creators debunking this predators in youtube just dig deeper don't believe everything you see , mainly when they don't explain stuff and just run background music in the video. Also there is no conspiracy if there was such a thing as perpetual motion machines they would be in use and electricity, heating, transport and stuff would be free, and no big corporation could hide it from the thousands of good engineers scientists and informed people of the world.

motor cycle batteries are 5ah rating, these stator only produce enough amps usually 10% of battery rating, or 500mA, you'd be ;lucky to get 2A on that stator. another problem is that only single phase, manufacturers will not allow a motor cycle with a 5ah battery to charge greater than 10% or 500mah or the batteries wouldn't last quick charging lead acid motorcycle batteries, best generators are 3 phase, you can get 1.73 times more power than single phase

Battery specifics would be one of the main holes in my knowledge. And also end up pretty bespoke to the install in question. I generally just ask some experts and defer to their judgement. As I understand it tho a motorbike alternator will charge a car battery just as happily as a bike's. Hoverboard wheels should be good for at least 300W nominal output, depending on specifics, and probably maybe like 4-500 if pushed.
