Yes Thailand still has a large number of totally wild elephants in some of the large national parks. Thailand has something like 70 national parks, more or less.

There's an interesting road near a hill station called Ooty in southern India. That road climbs up a wall, 4100 ft in 7 miles. At the beginning of the climb there's a traffic signboard which lists how many people died on that road each year in the last 5-10 years. And an elephant crossing sign. I did that road at least 15 times on my motorcycle and car. Many times I saw elephants on that steep road. Sometimes you need to wait an hour or more at a safe distance to let that pack of gentle giants pass the road safely.

I am actually taking a very similiar ride through Thailand with my Honda PCX 150. I started in Pattaya and stopped today in Lampang. To avoid Highways just choose smaller towns with google Maps beside the mainroads. Don't always choose the fastest route take the alternative route even though a section of the highway will bring you sometimes more quickly to your destination.

Thanks for your content - I went to Chiang Mai in 2017, stayed for a month, I loved the mango sticky rice and walking around CM.

Another idea is , if you see one of those little hardware stores or even at BigC just look for the working gloves. You get different variations that is made of real leather. Your get real thick ones and also thinner ones. They are also good for protecting your hands for bike riding. Otherwise like usual a real bike shop with accessories. In Thailand and Asia these are much cheaper than other countries and it is always worth it.
