I was in Rural King a few weeks ago and I was looking at their house brand filters, their fl910 equivalent is about the same size as an fl910 and only costs $2, but what's supposed to be their fl400 equivalent is only like a half inch taller at most than the fl910 and it costs a dollar more so I don't even know why they bother having the two filters and don't just tell you to use the 910 equivalent in applications that call for the 400 like most quick lube places would do anyways. I find it disappointing that over the years that Ford shortened the fl400 from around 5 inches tall to around 4 inches when the aftermarket equivalents are mostly still the same ~5in height.

You can sub a FL1A out for the FL400 or FL910 if it will fit. It is a very long filter with the same Filtration Specification but much higher flow rate.
@brandonupchurch7628
@brandonupchurch7628 Год назад
I know that but the Fl1A these days doesn't cost the same as the fl910 of fl400 anymore they're like $8-10, at that price you might as well spring for a premium filter like the Fram FE8A, especially with Purolato/Motorcrafts bad history of larger diameter filters tearing in service.
@LA_Commander
@LA_Commander 8 месяцев назад
They shortened it because there were many small cars with low ground clearance which required the (short) FL-910 filter. Problem was many people (and quicky lube shops) were installing the FL-400 filter instead since it would fit. Then someone would scrape the bottom of the filter with an obstacle on the ground and poof! you have a major oil leak. So Ford did this as a preventative measure.
@TNitroH
@TNitroH 7 месяцев назад
Some short filters have a smaller center core that makes up for the shorter length. The filter media square inches are the same or even more. Stick with what Ford recommends

You would think the oil filter manufacturer would be on their toes with quality control because more people are cutting oil filters open to see what the filter has caught. Thank you for your time.

I don’t care for sloppy glue jobs, but if that glue was not capable of standing up to hot oil the filters would pretty much fall apart. I don’t think sloppy glue application is anything to worry about. Most that I’ve seen were sloppy on the outside of the filter anyway. Not to be argumentative, but realistic.

The FL1A also fits in place of the FL910S. Some Fords the FL1A will not fit, like on the Focus, but will barely fit on the Fiesta. I always go larger if it fits for Lower Flow Restriction of the same filtration spec.

When I owned a Ford that had the 910S from the factory, I used them every time I changed the oil. They were cheap at Walmart, had the silicone anti-drainback valve and the preferred base plate end bypass valve. With the poor glue control for the 400S, it appears that quality was job 243 though.

More samples needed, yes. However, I've seen several Motorcrafts (Purolators) opened up, and glue is very often excessively thrown around. Your odds are probably not that great of getting that Lucky clean one. Every time Whip City or somebody else has opened up a "Microgard Select" (must say "select", not the cheaper Microgard one) it has always looked right. I had a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 with the 2.0L Zetec (DOHC) engine and 5-speed manual transmission that we purchased new in August 2001. I drove it 275K miles until I had to have it crushed in 2015 because it had rotted out badly (Im in New England) and was not safe to drive. I had religiously changed the oil every 6K miles and mostly used Motorcraft FL-2005 oil filters (what the owners manual called for) which Ford replaced in 2010(ish) with the FL-400S which was the identical diameter but about 3/4 inch shorter. At the end the engine still ran perfectly. I currently use Motorcraft FL-910S in my 2005 Focus with 199K on it.

The person who is responsible for doing a quality control check on the filter glue application (spot checks on the first 100 filters) after a production restart, after adding more glue to the system, is not doing their job! Yeah, poor QC on the 400S. See excess potting thing from time to time on the Purolator made filters like MC. Thing about it, if it was to break loose from base endcap, possible in a bypass event could go directly to back to engine through base bypass opening. Those couple things combined not common, but still. Something Steve might want to consider, using the non-spec 400 and if 2020 vehicle still under warranty, if something was to happens to engine, Ford could void warranty. Anytime using non spec filter, the filter warranty voided. Steve should stick to 910S, no need for the 400 even if no QC issues. 910S also a good OPE filter option, value price. Thanks for the vid.

Excess loose glue problems appear to be random. Some makes probably have it more. Motorcraft (Purolator) has poor quality control. Good filter WHEN they make it right, but can you trust it? More consistent quality control: "MicroGard Select", Fram Ultra or Titanium

I'd use the 910S because it's what the people who designed and built it put on there and because the bypass pressures are so different. If it were a pound or two fun, but 5.5 lbs is a big difference. You're not gaining much by going to the bigger filter so it's not really worth it.

That 400s looked sloppy. Dismissing that, I’m more hesitant to change from stock on turbo engines. That difference in bypass pressure could mean the difference the turbo starving for oil. The difference in filtering media size is negligible.
