We tested 4 of the most viewer suggested oil filters to see which one was the best. We simulated hot and cold temperatures, their ability to filter out fine particles, and sent them off to a laboratory to assess their filtering performance. #oil #filter #test
Special thanks to ZeeOSix from the BITOG community for some of the awesome testing ideas

Up in the league with Project Farm with this level of comparison testing with better visuals. (I also recommend testing OEM oil filters, I know that Honda for example such as the A02 and 15400-RTA-003 have felt/cardboard end caps with no wire backing. I just checked the Toyota N1 spin on filter as well and it’s fairly rudimentary in it’s construction, at least in appearance)

Many people don't realize that Purolator, Wix, and many house brands (ie. Napa, Carquest) are all owned and manufactured by Mann-Hummel. So it makes sense that those 3 were very close to each other in most of the tests.The Purple filter was the only really different one.

Is Mann-Hummel the German company that I heard bought Wix fairly recently? Probably is, because before the buy-out, Wix made oil filters for NAPA and several others parts store house brands........plus this new video proves they have the same identical components inside the filters. If this is the case, it's good to see Mann-Hummel is keeping up the quality of Wix filters. By the way: before the buy out, I had an Amsoil rep tell me over the phone that their own Amsoil brand oil filters were also made by Wix. Amsoil had only Wix and their Amsoil branded filters available to purchase on their website, and people are paying a little extra money for the Amsoil branded filter, which is identical to the Wix filter, lol. At least the Amsoil rep was being honest about answering my question.

Would love to see Amsoil, Napa Gold (or WIX equivalent), AC Delco Ultragaurd Gold, Purolator One next. Plus would be nice to see a repeat of Fram Ultra Synthetic, Mobil 1 and K&N. I’m sure this testing already takes a lot of effort but repeatability would be interesting (both for skid and between different filters of the same brand). Keep up the great work. @@BrandRanks Thanks, but you better thest the oil filters which are having the steel particles in the thread from the factory thread-cutting , because the factoryes did Not properly clean the threads !!! I have tested the Mann, Mecca, Wix, Filtron, Fram, and some other , But they Alll had the metal particles in the thread, which Are Directly sucked into the engine and into the bearings, thus Damaging the engine !!! ! !!! The Only Two filter factoryes , which did Not have those steel particles in the thread, were old Mahle filters (because some new ones are from China) , and Bosch filters . Now, please, do some more testing, 2 Disclosure this Deception of the Bad factoryes , which most of the mechanics are still Not aware of it. Thank you.

It's almost unbelievable how good this video is for the sub count. I've always wondered what makes a "premium" filter more expensive and I'm really impressed that the Purolator was able to filter out the most particles while still being the least restrictive. That's a big win in my book.

Sure, more scientific; however, I'd still like to see the used oil test kept. Real oil with real particulates, not lab dust. Used oil is not going to have the same characteristics as new oil. And the metal particulates are going to have differing shapes and profiles than lab ground and graded dust.
@KngSovereign
@KngSovereign Год назад
@@heartysteer8752 what you're saying sounds good. But if the filters fail using industry standard dust (that is designed to mimic the charactistics of typical particles) Then I don't see how using "real world" examples would show anything more conclusive than what has already been shown. Due to the fact that actual engine particulates break off at different rates (and shapes as you said), there's no way to duplicate the same test using the same amount of "real world" debris. The laboratory dust allows tests to be more consistent between filters. Otherwise the results could be skewed based on what kind of particulates were used for a particular test. I think these results are more useful than the random results that can be generated by "real world" examples. 😁
@linuxguy1199
@linuxguy1199 Год назад
@@heartysteer8752 It's funny - some people just don't realize how ridiculously stupid they are - the "lab dust" is literally made to model differing shapes and profiles, that's the entire point of the "lab dust". Also, if your engine has big enough particulates where the shape actually matters then *you have far bigger problems* then your next oil change. cdn.standards.iteh.ai/samples/63386/9a1bcaa0d6df4330b7b4dd7af9cbda75/ISO-12103-1-2016.pdf

I am a Mechanical Engineer so I absolutely love your methodology. But I do feel like there is a trade off between flow rate and capacity/performance. What I mean is that I think that a more restrictive flow rate filter media will usually by nature give a higher capacity and a better performance. So considering that if, IF, you consider all four tests have an equal weight you can then add the results together, and the Boss comes out on top with a score of 7. You are obviously more experienced with testing than I am, so please don't hesitate to respond to my 2 cents worth.....LOL I also appreciate the tear down and review of all the filters and I agree that it is also an important factor.
@BrandRanks
@BrandRanks 6 месяцев назад
Awesome a fellow Mechanical engineer! Yeah there is normally that trade off, but in our FRAM video we found that filter material is also very important, cellulose tends to be very reatrictive and you can get a better filtering performance and better flow with synthetic media. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel! And yes the Boss would come on top actually after all the videos we've done so far they still are on the top even with a 50 percent weight on filtering performance.
@timbuckman3870
@timbuckman3870 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the response!! Very interesting. I didn't even think about weighting the different results differently, but that is a great point. And it was just my 2 cents worth that I weighted them the same. That sounds like pretty conclusive data. Can I assume that ranking is also compared to your other video with four other filters tested the same way? I know this is a totally different test, but is there good way to test motor oil? Again, I so greatly appreciate your testing methodology. There are so many auto part consumable products tests on here that make little sense, but your makes total sense and was a great and interesting watch! I will be watching more of your videos, Thank-you!!! Sheepish grin...LOL.....Today I changed the oil filter on my 2006 Honda CR-V and installed a Boss based on some other (decent) reviews I watched before yours validated my decision.

Wix also makes Orillys house brand Microguard filters, same filters but about 30% less expensive. Microguard Select are Wix XP. We have used Microguard for years on a fleet of 14 trucks plus personal and employee vehicles. The cold fluid restriction shows why you still need to regularly change engine oil and not go 15k or 20k miles, it can cause the bypass valve to open sending unfiltered oil though the engine so you want good clean oil. Even more with some people who think heavier oil is better, recommends 5-30 but they use 20-40, causing excessive drag hurting power and gas mileage. Plus possibly overloading the oil bypass valve causing high oil pressure at higher rpms when not warmed up.

@meowmeow2759
@meowmeow2759 Год назад
@@davidpowell3347 nope, adds complexity. Piston engined aircraft (the older ones) were about KISS. Keep it simple stupid, it adds to the reliability. The oil filter is just a paper filter with no bypass. The filters are changed every 50 or 100 flight hours and required to be inspected for metal material, if a certain amount of metal material is noticed in the filter it's time for a full engine overhaul. I usually only find a couple specs of metal and some lead deposits. Really early aircraft engines didn't even have an oil filter.

I worked at Wix in Gastonia,NC, 40 years ago in the Information System Department. That made filters there and Dillon, SC. Back then, they made filters for Wix, Napa and Purolator. They also made many other brands. Always been a quality product. Today not sure on the Purolator, but still think the Wix and Napa are still being made there.

In case anyone's curious, the vendor for the dust doesn't seem to publish their prices but the current price for medium test dust standard reference material direct from NIST is $549.00 for 20 grams. For reference, this is almost exactly half the price of 170 grams of NIST peanut butter at $1,107.00. And, yes. NIST standard peanut butter is a thing. And, yes. It is my preferred reference point for pricing.

I agree with the post below. Test OEM filters also. I have been using Honda filters in the Honda and Ford in the Ford. Partially because of the vast amount of counterfeit stuff being sold. At least if I buy from the Dealer or Amsoil, I know that I'm getting what I'm paying for

I'm glad to see you include flow and particulate capacity characteristics. 👍 I'd like to know: At what point of particulate removal do we reach the point of diminishing returns? 20-micron performance is touted by manufacturers. Would 40 minimum be just as non-damaging? 60?

I have been using Wix XP oil filters for the past 25 years. This is my favorite brand because of the filter media and the reasonable price. You need to test the K&N, Mobil 1, and Pennzoil Platinum HE brand filters to find out if they go beyond Wix XP. For the past 34 years driving, I have experience with all major retail brand oil filters. I always avoid Fram at all costs.

In realistic, real world use, I think the Wix and Puralator filters are comparable. I understand in measured performance they differ but for those of us that actually do a good job changing oil on a regular basis, they both perform well enough to prevent particulate related damage to an engine. Lets face it, the most important part of filters (other than no cardboard in them) is regular, not extended, oil changes.

I got it... your tests are much better than anyone else I've seen so far. Can you also compared the Mobil 1 vs the Purolator oil filter? Can you also test oils (the highest and equal grade of each brad)? I've seen the Project Farm tests but it's not a "well controlled test" as yours is, and he did not compared apples-to-apples (he used different grades across the oils used, although they were all 5W30). this is a certified hood classic

The theory was that Napa Gold were Wix filter for over a decade. When they got bought out by Mann+Hummel you also saw the M+H on the napa gold cartridge. Some models have extremely sharp threads that didn't seal that great on the '17 MX5 and that's when I started to explore. You also have her Purolater under the same umbrella iirc but I forget which line correlates to which line. I always suspected the Napa Platinum would be Wix XP. With so many companies under the same umbrella they could in reality vary by filter as now of any of them can make half of the filters and another site make the other half and I'm sure each of them has multiple sites of manufacturer. It is a good product that's done me well in the past and the reason I always liked them was they seem to not have some of the weird oil pressure inconsistency that we'd see with Fram. Napa traditionally carried better quality things from manufacturers in their stores. There's way less of them, they're often in inconvenient places, some are definitely more distribution than some are just smaller facilities, but typically they were good though. It feels like that's kind of slipped a bit more as time has gone by or I've just had some bad luck. If you're an employee, you should check out the discount. You can get on Carlyle stuff. It's good quality stuff but pretty pricey for those of us coming in off the street.

To make graphs super clear, maybe a note of whether "1" or "4" is the best or worst ? Like "With 1 being the best and 4 being the worst ..." And maybe total the four columns to see which is the overall winner ? Also, I am amazed when someone comes into the store and won't spend $3.27 extra for a better filter to protect their engine, which is basically the car ... Thanks again !!!

Good maint. starts day one. I do my first oil change at 1,000 miles after initial break in and taking it easy on the skinny pedal the first 1k. I also use a filter mag from day one for a little extra filtering without reducing flow and since most wear occurs in the first 1k miles its good to have the filter mag on right away. Some cars cant use the filter mag like my grand Cherokee. So I used a mag plug thats a brand name and best one out there. The magnet is inside so it can never pop off. Only issue with the mag plug is you cant just slap it on there you need to do an oil change before using it. So I did my first oil change on the grand Cherokee at 500 for this reason. I prefer the filter mag but I can guarentee you the mag plug does work and catches particulates everytime I changed my oil it had super fine particles stuck to it. You dont get the same level of satisfaction out of the filter mag since you cant see it unless you cut open the filter but its there. Some say the filter will catch and filter it anyways so the magnet is useless. The great thing about the magnet is it will grab even the smallest metal particle and will also help keep the filter cleaner longer so less clogging=more filter flow. Also use good quality oil and I change when my onboard computer says oil life is at 50%. I can do my change for about $50 myself with full synthetic and boss filter so its cheap insurance to keep my vehicles in top condition. I typically don't sell my cars unless I need to switch to a different platform. Recently had to sell my grand Cherokee to buy a pickup. Whoever ended up with that Jeep was lucky I am willing to bet there want a better maintained vehicle on the road. Im amazed people buy off lease cars knowing that most owners never change the oil till its time to turn it in. I would never by a used car that was a lease. If you bought a used lease vehicle this video is of no use to you the damage has already been done. I live in the south so no rust issues here Im planning on getting 30 years out of my new truck.

I don't know what happened but all the filters went up in price and the incentive to pass three O'Reilly's, three AutoZones, and four Walmarts just dissolved. It was kind of my excuse to go and check out my preferred store. I guess it's probably as much that their oil filter for the MX5 isn't very good on the threads so I've been playing with other filters for the first time in a long time.
