A couple of weeks ago the Patrons of MCrider voted on a topic for Episode 37 on MCrider. They chose dealing with fear on a motorcycle. A very interesting topic and one that is not covered much in motorcycle publications. Dealing with fear while learning to ride is a very real obstacle for many new riders and experienced riders who find themselves in tricky situations on the road.
This week we look at fear, how to deal with it and how to overcome fear to gain confidence on the road.
For more information on getting access to Field Guide as mentioned in this video go to www.MCrider.com/fg
MCrider offers weekly motorcycle training that helps you become a better rider. The motorcycle training will focus on road strategies, motorcycle control and inspirational videos to help you get more enjoyment from your motorcycle.

I’m new to your Channel and I am absolutely impressed by the depth of knowledge you share on every subject! That being said I notice everyone teaches skill but this is the first mindset video I found. How do you overcome the fear involved with almost getting taken out by a Semi on the Freeway and the recurring physical systems of adrenaline making Freeway Riding exhausting?

Kind of a subject change, but you didn't scare me because I had temporarily lost the circle and was searching to (my) left of your face for it. NOT GOOD! Apply this same principle to a deer hidden in the ditch. Had I scanned the entire screen I could've found it on your nose. It kind of disappears close to your ear. (I have been up all night because I just got off work. Maybe lack of sleep contributed to my inability to stay focused. STILL NOT GOOD though, I commute on my bike when the weather is good.)

Greetings from Croatia! These are the best motorcycle series I have ever seen on You tube. I am a new rider (although I am 43 years old) and every single advice I hear from you is very welcome and I try to remember it and use it to my advantage when I ride. Keep up the good work please! Best regards!

I have been riding for 57 years, starting with a Cushman Scooter to deliver newspapers.. I have not ridden for nearly 30 years now and watch these vids so refresh myself.. You never forget how to ride a bicycle, or motorcycle.. My ass..I am not stupid enough to think there is nothing I have forgotten.. How about muscle memory, reflexes, observation skills... ALL grow rusty.. Just bought a Suzuki 1400 cc Boulevard.. Big bike for sure.. WHEN I get it totally road worthy I am not going to hop on the nearest interstate or during rush hour.. I AM going to my local football field.. AND PRACTICE OLD SKILLS.. I will be 70 the end of this month and plan on a whole bunch or years to come.. and passing on to Heaven in my sleep and not plastered on the front of a car or semi. There is an old saying.. There are bold gunfighters and there are old gunfighters..,. THERE AREN'T ANY OLD, BOLD gunfighters.

rpoolcode I wish you the best of luck and enjoy your riding. I have 2004 Honda Deauville now and it is very good for every day use and commuting. Very easy to handle, very stable and most forgiving! Lots of storage room also. It is not an "eye catcher" nor pretty but it is reliable and most of all it is a Honda! For me, as a beginner rider in my 40's it is perfect. I watch every episode of McRider excellent series! Best regards from extremely hot Croatia (it is one of the hottest summer in our history). See you on the road! 😃✌️

Once again some good pointers, thanks. Maybe you could spend an episode, for the newbies, on riding in strong winds as I've learnt the hard way to grip the bike with my knees and have a really loose grip on the handlebars. Holding on too tight with the hands causes the effects of the wind on my body to be transferred to the motorcycle making it less stable. Also, in general, having a strong grip on the handlebars is not a good thing as the bike needs very little input to head where you want it. This is the point I'm making; in moments of perceived fear you could end up fighting yourself trying to get around a tight corner simply because you have a too tight grip on the handlebars. Riders tend to support their weight by leaning on the bars but in reality they should use their core to support their posture and maintain a loose grip on the bars. You know what I'm getting at. Thanks again.

Thanks for your video series. I have learned so much from your videos. I received my license 15 yrs ago by taking a BRC. I had never ridden a bike before that course. I just purchased my 1st bike a few weeks ago however I hadn't ridden in 15 yrs since I completed that class. Thank God I wasn't cocky bc I decided to go through the class again before jumping on my bike. I was so overwhelmed by the things I had forgotten or hadn't practiced in all those years! My last day in class I crashed twice. Once from breaking in a turn and not standing the bike up. The 2nd was from breaking and to much speed. Great learning experience on the range rather than on the highway. Your videos are daily must haves. Keep up the good work bc believe it or not you're saving people's lives! God Bless!

Several times I've seen people come up to a corner, all is good, until they're mind screws them. Well within the speed to make the corner, but suddenly their mind tells them they're too fast. They panic, freeze, hit the brakes (all too many times the rear only), run off the corner, and fall over 15-20 feet from the edge of the pavement. They many times were going no more than 20 mph when they left the roadway. Target fixation. Freezing and focusing on a point of the outside of the corner, exactly where they run off at. I've even seen the guy behind them fixate on the run off and do the same thing, running off the road and landing right next to the first crasher. The mind is a powerful thing. Control the mind and the bike is easy..

I'm 70 and planning on getting back on the road again. I rode for many years, about 30 or so. My wife got me to give up the bikes and then she passed on few years back. I have been thinking on it, yet I am afraid and know that in order to ride again, I need to do a lot of training. I have much appreciation for your valuable information sharing that could save my life. I have a love of riding but also have a lot of work to do. Thank you so much for sharing all this great information for guys like me. You are appreciated. Respectfully, Bo

This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. So glad I found your channel and site. I recently got back into riding, I've taken the BRT 3 times in the last 22 years. I just passed the BRT again, got my endorsement again, have a new bike, all ready to go, but had a fear come over me that I've never experienced before. I'm 42 now, in a much different head space than when I was 22, and just keep going over all the "what if" scenarios. But I see all these amazing ADV videos and more women getting into riding, and I want to be able to join my partner on these adventures... Very sound advice! Looking forward to checking out your field guide. Can't wait to start my journey on becoming a proficient rider! Thank you.

Thanks Kevin! I just found your vids for the first time and I'm so glad I did! I haven't ridden (2x around the block on a friends) for two years, since a left turning suv didn't see me, and yep, bike was totalled and I was in real pain for awhile. I wrecked another time due to poor judgement and was in a halo brace for 3 months. I DO want to ride again, yet I am aware that my skills were never that great and even more I am getting older(50 ish). Things change as hard as that is to admit. The traffic in Denver is obscene, now I've become a transit bus driver and really get to observe these roads and the people on them. I WILL be signing up for an abate beginners course prior to riding my "new" 1980 cb750c. I'm glad you're doing what you do , and you do it well! You are a hero to me and I've only seen 3 of the shows! I will support this , join the patreon thing sorry i can't give more at this time. I will get friends to join the cause as well. God bless, if you're ever in the Denver area we should go for a ride!

Great advice, Kevin! I'm helping my son, sister, and a friend learn more about motorcycles so they can decide if they want to take a course and get a m/c license. Your instructional videos with great situational examples are very helpful. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for sharing something that has been pressing on my nerve for years now. I have a big bike electra classic 1996, it's my first motorcycle I went thought the riders safety course and FEAR was all over me during that course that bike has 2300 miles on it this day. But I got a chance to take the course again after not well on some the turns, then I got my license. This is a great service that you are providing for those who have fear of riding. Thank you I will conti. to watch your videos

Hey keven, about a year ago I laid down my bike due to rider error. New tire on a cold day in Waxahachie TX. Since then I have dealt with fear in the corners. So going back to the basics and starting over. Thanks for all that you do.

First time owner cb1100. I have rode several motorcycles in my lifetime (58 years old). I never had this fear until I became an owner, but I am determined to not let fear become my dimize. I just wanted to tell you this has been one of the best training videos I have watched. Your easy way of explanation, and calm demeanor is excellent. Thank you for your focus on training, and putting a plan in your training. I will use fear to always be in a training mode if that makes sense. Thanks again for a great video.

love you videos!!! Cornering has tended to be my biggest fear...the lack of control or not quite sure what to do...Everyone says more seat time, Im going to look up your field guide and practice. Parking lots have taught me how much my bike can actually lean!!
