Today we're reviewing a 2005 Suzuki SV650. This is a long video with lots of riding and good engine sound.
Keep checking the channel for at least one new motorcycle review per month for summer 2017.
REVIEW NOTES
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2005 SV650
V-twin entry level motorcycle
First launched as a carbed model in 1999 'ugly' (very very 90s)
Updated in 2003 with sharper looks and fuel injection
Stayed the same (barring colour changes & small things) and sold strongly right through to replacement
...including failed Gladius replacement
Much maligned by many forum heros as a girls bike
Basically dominated the mini-twin class when it debuted (still super common today in the class)
I've had extensive experience, bought the faired S in mid 2000s and owned it for 3 years. Now riding my girlfriends naked SV
I highly recommend this bike
Sharp looks, especially for a 14 year old design. Awesome tail lights, good looking frame.
Relatively comfortable in naked form. The seat could be less 'cornery'
Obviously not comfortable in S form. I found it bad for distance work.
Ergonomics are good, mirrors work well and the dash is good looking and simple/informative
Very light (much lighter than competition) easy to paddle around etc.
Easy to ride, fuels extremely well (take note GSR 600) despite
Engine is engaging and makes excellent use of it's 70hp
Perky and torquey with a moderate rush to the red line from 6500rpm or so
Not super fast but always enough power b-roads and great for cruising on motorways
Exhaust is absolutely essential. Sounds icredible! Proper V-twin
None of this parallel twin bullshit!
Feels nicer than ER-6, CB500, bandit etc
Fantastic wheelie bike
Handling is not bad, friendly and stable until pushed where front can get a bit flighty.
Nothing untorward or crashy but this is definitely budget suspension.
Heavier riders probably fair better with suspension due to lightness of the bike in general
Brakes are usable but less than spectacular. Again helped by lightness of bike
Ground clearance with original pegs exhaust can be limited but knee-down is a distinct possibility
Main advantage right now is price and availalbility.
Curvey ones easy to get for under £1000
Pointy anywhere between £1000 - 2500
Wouldn't pay more than £1500, so many examples available. Buy on condition/mileage not age.
Depreciation at that level is basically done with until 2016 model comes down in price in few years.
Generally reliable but some issues that appear on SV include:
Seal on front plug failing, allowing water to sometimes cause issues with front cylinder loss
Rust! Needs to be cleaned often as this is a cheap Suzuki!
Other than that generally reliable.
MODDING! SV is excellent for this.
Suspension and brakes easily upgradeable with re-spring or GSXR front end.
Excellent track bike with huge community able to make it destroy larger bikes on smaller tracks
Other bikes that are worth looking out for are the Honda Hornet (just as cheap) and Kawasaki Z750 more expensive but just as fun an more capable!

Best review of the SV650 on RU-vid. I'm an owner of a 2006 SV myself. It's my first bike, did 4,000 mi on it so far and am in the process of upgrading front and rear shocks, Fuel exhaust, larger rear sprocket, seat cowl, belly pan, and powder coated most engine parts black. It's the perfect all around bike for me at this time.

Update: made 15,000 miles on mine in the meantime (52,000 miles on odometer), runs like a peach after a throttle sync, fast idle adjustment, and throttle position sensor adjustment. Took it on a 3,000 mile road trip to Nova Scotia. It works as a touring bike if you keep it under 300 miles a day. After upgrading the suspension and adding an after-market exhaust it can provide you with tons of fun for a long time. Just make sure you check the oil frequently, as it tends to burn it a bit on long stretches at high RPMs.

Excellent mature review by an experienced biker. Very informative (I've been riding for 45 years and I learned alot about this bike and bikes in this class - my main ride is a 1975 ducati 900 ss ... the silver/blue not black/gold ones ).

I owned two sv 650s , 10 years of riding. Made 35000 km on it... when im looking a bike around a budget, i always come back the sv. Right know i try to open myself, but when you like and well know a bike, you keep the wining team, totally reliable and what an engine, the s version can play and beat naked 600cc four cylinders at every level

Great Vid. I’m actually looking at buying an SV650 so this video was very useful and informative. I was weighing it up against the ER6N and this has swayed my towards the Suzuki. The ER6 sounds like a tractor, no comparison with a decent exhaust on the SV650. Thanks again. More videos please 😃

I own sv650s 2008 for about 2.5 years now and I have no intention of selling it. I still get ton of fun every time I ride it.Tried my friends honda 600cc and It felt anemic really. Sometimes I wish there was a bit more power over 150km/h but still its best torque is within the most usable range for most people.After swapping handlebars for the ones you have in the video it completely transformed the bike.Looks now are very similar to something like Yamaha Fazer. Its nice, comfy, slightly agressive forward tilted position makes it perfect. If you get this bike ,get rear shock from zx10r and front stiffer springs for the front shock.And braided brake hoses.Its lovely bike😄

Thanks. I really appreciate that. They're all good choices but I favour the SV if you're looking for a b-road fun bike. If you're doing commuting in the city then the Hornet is worth a shout. The Fazer is maybe best for longer distance stuff.

I had a 2007 SV650S ... it effortlessly glided to 100mph, and certainly didn't run out of puff at 80mph. It sat comfortably at 80-90 on the highway, with plenty left for overtaking. My main peeve with the S version was the riding position was very uncomfortable for me. After about 60 minutes I had had enough. The vibrations through the gas tank started to be bothersome to the gentleman's area after about this time too. I'd get about 50mpg, so a solid 200 miles on a tank, although the flashing fuel light at about 160 miles was a bit unnerving. It was a great little bike!

Really informative video - thanks very much indeed! I am a fifty-something year old with a long history of driving reasonably exotic four wheeled things faster than is strictly conventional, but now I want to learn two. Given my age and mileage I can do CBT and DAS so this could be my first bike. Even my Ducati nutty best mate says I should do this one first. So thank you again for this video!
@TheLoneTrader

No problem at all. I think you will be pretty pleased with it. These restrict in power as well if you're going the A2 route. It's just a case of plugging in a restricted ECU, it takes a couple of minutes. It doesn't suffer too badly because it's relatively tourquey and lightweight.

@bryandenmark4951
@bryandenmark4951 4 года назад
I know I'm replying to a two year old question but figured I would leave the information here anyway. My 2004 gets 55mpg. 150 miles and the fuel light starts to blink. 200 miles and your pushing it.
@sv650nyc7
@sv650nyc7 6 лет назад
Great review, one of the best on the web about this model. The 2004-2006 models should get the same gas mileage. I get about 46mpg on highway and country roads, and 36mpg in the city. So the range is more like 160-200 miles with its 4.5 gal tank. The biggest pet peeve I have is that the fuel light starts blinking with 1.1gal (4 l) left, then turns into a steady light with 0.4gal (1.5 l) left. That should have been reversed, as the blinking is super annoying, and a steady light is not annoying enough to make you stop at a gas station when you actually really should (ask me how I know).

@Adam Naperty OP has NYC in his name so I'm guessing he's American. This means that his 46 USA mpg is 55 UK mpg.

I'm riding Suzuki Kaatana 1992, 750cc for over 3years and I'm looking for something new - different and younger :D I'm doing mostly commuting and short trips. Will the SV650 feel like an upgrade, compared to the Katana? And is it worth looking for the SV1000? Thanks in advance for the reply!

I own a 2001 SV650S, which i've owned since 2008 but hardly used it (i think its done about 23k miles) as it makes my carpul-tunnel (numb hands) flare up due to its riding posiition with the clip-ons. I really wanted the naked version with the "normal" handlebars but i couldn't find one at the time. It's a lovely sounding engine, and if i recall i used to get 55-60mpg out of it (the curvy/carbed version). I prefered the curvy frame design, i think it's a thing of beauty. I'm a bit of a procrastinator and had been meaning to sell it for years, but since the recent world health pandemic and the possibility of having some spare weeks to fill....i've had a change of heart, and have decided to "do it up" (its been sitting un-used under a bike cover for 5 years and needs some tlc....metal subframe is a little rusty, brakes stuck, headrace bearings notchy at center etc). I had a lightbulb moment and thought "why don't i just convert it to a naked version"...then i can probably ride it more comfortably. So i've spent a few days researching and buying various parts needed to do the conversion and a pretty awesome looking digital/analog gauge: www.digital-speedos.co.uk/gauges-c4/motorcycle-gauges-c27/multifunction-gauges-c29/acewell-ma85-multifunction-gauge-speedometer-rpm-temperature-gauge-gear-indicator-and-shift-light-etc-p558 This project should keep me amused for a few weeks. I can't wait to get it back on the road again now. A tip i feel is worth noting to any "curvy" (1998-2002) riders....if you feel your cam-chains are a little rattly it could be because the cam-chain tensioners are of a "screw-type" and can work loose i think. When i got my bike i ordered some used cam-chain tensioners from the newer "pointy" model SV (around 2004 model) as they are a ratchet-type and cannot work loose. If i recall i had to grind a little bit of metal off them so they fit flat against the cylinder barrel correctly. But they work.

you mentioned that it's not great for pillion riding--does it wheelie out of control or is it pretty easy to handle? never had a bike this big, had a 125 that i rode every day for years but never was into wheelieing and don't want to get into it accidentally.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 7 лет назад
bordellos It's not uncontrollable by any means. It's certainly affected by them though and handling is changed significantly. I've had a ... umm 'larger' pillion on the back and rapid acceleration in first almost always resulted in a wheelie. Not something to worry about if you're buying one, just be gentle on the throttle and smoother in the turns and you'll be 'reet lad.

Question to any of you with these bikes: I notice watching the video that these bikes seem to steer differently. Is counter steering required on this, I assume it does as most bikes do. When steering into a long light corner, is just a small movement of handlebars needed or do you need to countersteer or lean?
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 5 лет назад
Control inputs on the naked SV only need to be very light or small. It can feel more unstable than bigger bikes but once you get used to it, it just feels nimble. You do have to watch the front under power though, it can get pretty squirrelly.

Nice intro, those mirrors are shite, but I guess they work well. I wouldn't say the gearbox is silky smooth, I've owned 2 and both were adequate, nothing more, not like a Honda or triumph though. Don't lift the front wheel for long periods or you'll starve the front cylinder. Still, it's still one of the best all-round midsized big bikes, even with newer alternatives. (Hat boy harvey)

SV1000S - A lovely engine with a broad spread of power. It handles well enough but obviously is heavier than the 650, perhaps makes it feel a little dull in comparison. Very thirsty on fuel but looks great and I like it. Ergonomics are very similar to the 650. A good safe choice but I slightly prefer the 650 because it feels more fun. Firestorm - I didn't like at all. Great low-down power but no top-end to speak of really. Didn't sound nearly as nice as either SV and feels/looks more old-school. Front suspension too soft and rear far too hard, handling was 'interesting' on bumpy roads to say the least. Comfy bike, ergos are OK (weird choke/fast idle placement) but the tank range on early bikes is pathetic (90 miles on mine! but increased tank size on later models). Mine also had piston slap issues. There's a good bike in there but they need work to let them shine.

i think the twins attract less "attention" because the sound vs speed you are going compared to a 4.

Totally unnecessary...its 75hp not 130hp and a naked bike. Anything above 90mph is suffering. I've never tried topspeed on mine because its not designed for that. Cruising at 70mph or 120kmh is a breese and with plenty of power for overtake if necessary. The brilliance of this bike is the city and fast country roads. It pulls like a train in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. Made some trips with a friend in a cb1000r and never stayed behind even on motorways...

Doesn't the SV650 break if you do wheelies? Something about oil leaving an important area.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 4 года назад
There is some evidence to support this but in the 4 years I owned my first SV I pulled lots of 2nd gear wheelies with no adverse effects. My suspicion is that extended wheelies (I'm talking more than 30 seconds here) may cause problems if you're continually doing them. However, for 99% of people it's perfectly fine.

Great looking bike with a good reputation, but there are a few things I don't like about it. I dislike the tall shape of the tank, I love the big analog tach, but think it would be a thousand times nicer with an analog speedo as well, and I really think the rear suspension arm looks weird for some reason. It is too flat and blocky, looks like a piece of stock aluminum they bolted on at the last minute. Other that those gripes, it looks like a pretty amazing choice and I will probably buy one soon as my first bike. My other gripe is that they always seem to be blue and I despise blue cars/bikes.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 3 года назад
The thing to remember about the SV650 is that it IS a cheap and cheaply-made motorcycle. So that swingarm is a very cheap box-section bit of aluminium. It's a fun but limited bike that's perfect for road riding and new riders. If you keep that in mind when buying one you'll probably be very happy.

careful with the wheelies you can starve the engine of oil and destroy it on certain years
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 5 месяцев назад
I've yet to experience that over the years. Unless you're constantly hoisting minute-long balance point wheelies, I think it's more urban myth than anything. The same can be said of lots of IL4 designs too.

How is highway riding? Two in particular sections: 1. with wind buffeting? 2. can it easily do 110-110mph for extended pieces of highway, you know like any of us would do on a 50 mile highway ride, every so often open her up and to 100mph to 110mph for maybe 2-3 mile blasts. What does it redline at? So i just heard you say in the video that it starts to run out of steam around the 80mph mark. REALLY?? That could literally break my whole decision to buy one as i do highway commnuting about 50% of the time and here in new york cars do 75-85 normally and on a motorcycle i would want to be cruising at minimally 80 to 85mph myself without having to worry that i am near redline and having the bike give massive buzzing feedback. Which reminds me, how is the feel through the seat and handlebars? Alot of buzzing and making your hands, wrists and arms feel like falling off? Thank you in advance for the replies.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 6 лет назад
Hi there. I'll try and answer your questions as best I can. With regards to highway riding: 1. Wind buffeting isn't a huge problem but if you're on the naked version without a screen, anything over 80mph is gonna get tiring quickly. 2. Yes. I once did a 6 hour journey (in my younger days) where I spent most of it at 120mph or so and the SV didn't skip a beat. It was comfortable but easily doable. What I mean when I say it runs out of steam above 80mph is that the rate of acceleration noticeably drops off. I'd say up to 80mph it'll keep up with the majority of stuff but above there anything IL4 600cc sports and up will tear it a new one. It can go significantly faster, years ago I got 144mph indicated out of my faired SV. It took a very long time to get there though. Vibration isn't really a problem. My bandit 1200 is much worse for vibration. I did find the faired one uncomfortable for wrists and my upper back though. Just because of the position.
@TheNobleLoyalist

The Lone Trader Thank you so much for your prompt reply. You definitely answered my questions. I feel much better about the decision to go looking for one for myself over the NY winter and then upgrading various parts of it and just overall personalizing it to my taste. As for your response regarding wind buffeting, did you mean to say that a naked SV without the little windscreen (you know the little one that covera just the gauges) it can get windy anive 80mph. I want a nakes SV, i do NOT want the S model. I feel the naked version looks more stylish. I plan on putting the gauge cluster wind screen on mine. it looks as if you have it? Does it do anything do you think in terms of directing wind above the helmet or away sort of of the chest area? or do you think it is pretty much only for looks? thanks again!!

Bought my 15 plate SV650S based on this review, nearly two years to the day. Traded in my 99 GSXR 600 SRAD for it, wanted to experience a vtwin and have not been disappointed. I have had an annoying issue since I bought it with only 6K on the clock. Minutely moderating the throttle around 4500rpm, when matching speed with traffic, the bike will sometimes start to buck violently like it is running out of fuel, only closing and resetting the throttle position will fix it. Bike is fine everywhere else. Finally going to change the 4 plugs today (twin spark model), see if that helps. If not I hear it could be a crack in a vacuum hose, possible needing a throttle body sync or simply needing a remap even though it only has a delkevic slip on (standard air filter). If you have any insight, I'd appreciate it, I've scoured the Internet over the last two years and am still at a loss. When I say minute throttle inputs, I'm talking where it's so slight you can't even see my hand moving, like 1mm each way.
