A look at the 3 main components of a simple analogue speedometer, and how the system works.
The speedo unit, the wheel mount unit, connecting cable.
The cable on the bike concerned snapped so the cable shown in the video is a 2nd hand replacement I had lying around. It was suitable to use for demonstration in this video, but is actually way too short to use on the bike. I will need to find a longer on before i reinstall the speedometer on the bike.
I thought it was useful to see the system working with the power drill attached. And it was very interesting to see how the odometer could be rolled backwards by reversing the drill. I know the video doesn't show much detail on this point, but it was scary to see how easy that was to do. I know I won't believe the mile counter on an analogue speedometer again anytime soon!

helpful stuff. Thanx for taking the time. I imagine they eventually addressed the rollback issue by replacing mechanism with a ratcheting gear of some sort to keep crooks from doing just that.

Have a 69 Honda cl125a scrambler with 03800 original miles. Hit a bad bump on the trails and 0 turned to 9. Speedo now shows 93800 mi. Thanks. This vid will help me to put back to original.

glad it helped! Cables are an easy fix, very satisfying! here's an example of someone repairing a 'slipping clutch' by lubing the cable: Delboy's Garage, 'How-To' lube and free-off stuck control cables.

I never knew that the cable in these things is constantly spinning around inside it's housing! Surely the heat buildup caused by friction would be immense and you would think that they would wear out a lot quicker than the do. Are there bearings at each end of the casing?

you would have to sit there with the drill on for quite some time to roll it back to any sort of significant number though!

it should have a freewheeling gear that only goes in one direction. scary isnt it. cheers mate

I have this speed it has four wires in pairs of two that is (grey and black/white) then the other pair is( navy blue and orange) please how do i connect them

I'm assuming there is a ratio of gears inside that convert the rotation of the cable into a rotation equivalent to mph.

Thank you for your video. I cleaned and lubricated my speedometer cable already but the needle is bouncing. My bike is a Honda Nighthawk 450. Do you know how to fix a bouncing speedometer needle? Thanks.

BrownBrady Usually a cable sticking because of wear or twisting. Lubricate the cable or check the routing of it. If that fails, renew the cable. Most likely solve the problem. Good luck.

My cable looked fine but the needle bounces when I hit bumps and it wavers while moving instead of being steady it's not bouncing just isn't steady tell I get up to 55. Plus the speed seems off what you think it is? And how do I know if it's this?

Zack Ryan mine used to do that. Just means the cable on the end attached to the dial isn't all the way in. Wiggling it around for a while did it for me.

Okay so I have a Yamaha 750 virago from 88. The needle in my speedometer is stuck (doesn't move), but the rest of the components works just fine. Do you have any advice on how to fix this problem? Thanks

Thanks so much for this video. I've been wondering how a speedometer cable works. A couple nights ago I heard a weird noise on my 2011 Ninja 250, like a squirrel got stuck in my wheels or something. Search "strange sound of speedo cable" where another guy riding the model hears the same thing. My instrument lights shorted out when this happened also and haven't worked since. I was told that the sound is caused by the speedo cable and to try lubing it. Any comments or suggestions? Any idea why my instrument lights would be affected by this?

heat build up inside the gauge going through the cable. heated up the wires for the lights thus causing it to short....a little far fetched but that could be it

Hi! hard to know what's causing that exactly...was it more of a mechanical squeeking noise, or an electronic one? Does the 2011 nija have an electronic speedo display? If it was a mechanical noise I would suspect that something is wearing on the inside of the speedo unit, or, as suggested above, the cable needs a bit a clean & lube! If it's electronic, im afraid im no use to yu here in this post - check your regulator, battery and wiring to the speedo... Good luck!

***** That solely depends on your wheel circumfrence and differential (or gears, teeth). I'm sure, you can find info on the net for your vehicle :o)

please for the sake of peoples hard earned money ..edit out the part where you wound the miles back...the world will be full of wound back bikes with all telling lies about their motors usage.. most know this already but why help those who don't ?
