Here is a review of two sets of motorcycle tires after long term use, the Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail and the Michelin Anakee 3.
I talk a bit about some general tire information for motorcycle travel, and also get into depth on these two tires and how they have performed on my R1200GS both on road and off road in the dirt, mud and rain.
Hope you enjoy this video, thanks for watching!

I ride motorcycles for 20 years and are about 500.000 miles on my back. I need to say I used all the major tires brands/models for touring and commute. Michelin Pilot Road are the best of all. I use the whole series: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 2 weeks ago I install the new Road 5 (they decide no use the word "pilot" anymore). 101% of my recommendation.

How would you rate their off road performance? I just bought a set and wonder to what extent I could follow my brother in their quads.

I am sorry to hear that you have 500,000 miles on your back. Your back must hurt a lot. Carrying all the weight, poor thing! Jaja! Gee, after 35 years of riding, 19 bikes (1 used and 18 new) and traveling extensibly, I wonder how many miles I have on my back? Unless one keeps a log, how in the world do one even calculate the number of miles? How do you do it, do you keep a log or 500,000 miles is just an guesstimate?

Thank for the review, Tim! I know that this is an old video, however, I was giving a hard look at the Anakee 3's for some upcoming (mostly pavement) travel in the Midwest and east coast. Your comments about wet weather was especially concerning to me. I love the price point of these tires, but not at the cost of poor wet weather handling. I will just put out the extra money and go with my usual Mitas E-07's. The Mitas tires used to be comparable in price to the Anakees'sbut the price has gone up considerably.

I have always been a Pirelli and Metzeller man until i bought my GSA which came with the Anakees. Never regretted it. Got great mileage out of them. Nearly 20k kms on the first set. Really good and grippy in all conditions and especially with a loaded bike two up I was impressed with the holding on twisty roads too.

Totally agree I've had the pr4s for about 30000 mile on a gsxr 1000 totally solid grip apart from the odd power slide on wet salted UK roads I even did a Track day with the no problems at I've had them on a deauville for 5000 mile and no problems at all got a gs 4 weeks ago with panicky 3s on and omg I've got to change them for pr 4s or road 5s I've had the back slide out on me even in rain mode with tc wound up full there shocking on our wet roads not bad in the dry though but definitely not a patch on the road 4s

Woah, tire talk is the fastest route to arguments lol. It's very subjective and two people will often have vastly different experiences. Another word of caution about buying tires on line is about mounting them. If you can mount them yourself, awesome, but some dealers will charge significantly more if you walk in their shop with tires you bought online. It is a liability issue in many cases. Having owned a shop and been involved in liability lawsuits involving ties I totally get why some dealers refuse to touch online purchased tires. Just something to be aware of. Another awesome video 👌👍
@bikeryder757
@bikeryder757 5 лет назад
I was wondering about that issue when he suggested that. Also buying stuff through your local dealer is your best interest in my opinion. You get to know the service and parts guys, it keeps them employed and the dealer open to service your bike. Keep it local!

I have had good luck with the Michelin Pilot's on my Suzi. I am getting about the same kind of mileage. My wife, and I got caught in a major monsoon storm where we got pounded by blinding rain, and hail. I thought the Pilot's grip in wet, icy conditions was way above average. Never had even an inkling of slippage in very scary conditions.

I have a 2014 R1200GS and replaced the Annakee III at about 13,000 miles with Conti Trail Attack II. On my third set now and get about 21,000-23,000 on both the front and rear (currently 70,5++ miles). The wear pattern is better than the Annakee's with some cupping on the Conti's but no hard ridge line. The Conti's are a zero degree radial and handle off angle pavement transitions better than the Annakees. I bad for maintaining tire pressure and the wear is very good. Excellent warm up, confident in wet and temps below freezing. I'm about 5,000 away before I need a new set.

Never had the Annakees slip even in rain or on painted lines. They have a nice sidewall that really helps the steady ride. Avoiding things they were always predictable. I like the consistent feel of the Annakee 3's .

I was very fortunate that the previous owner of my Tiger 800 had just put on a set of Michelin Pilot 4 Trail tires. My previous bike had Michelin Pilot Road 2 tires and I really liked how they performed and held up. The Pilot 4 Trail tires have lived up to the same expectation and perform extremely well in the wet. They are very confidence inspiring and has never given me any oh sh*t moments even though I do like to push hard even in the wet. I've put just about 20K KMs on these tire, not sure on how many KM the PO had run them, but it looks to have easily another full season left on them (roughly 10K KM).

Shinko 705's for primarily road, great in wet pavement, very reliable for light off pavement. Shinko 804/805 for dual purpose. My everyday tires now. Great in wet. Great in mud. Great in sand. Rear has over 20k and is just coming up to the wear bar. Front isnt even half worn. They both went on at the same time. Also VERY affordable.

Perfect timing for this video. I have Perellli tires on my bike. Front tire is cupping bad at 9,000. I am going on a big trip in May and I had been considering the Michelin tires, now I will get them for sure! Front tire makes me mad because I check my air pressure often. Plus my bike has tire pressure monitoring sensors I look at that every time I ride my motorcycle. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Nice to know you also have great experience with PR4 :) I have a same thoughts about them - they really helps to gain confidence - on any type of roads, especially wet. That's they main "flaw" - in the rain or on wet asphalt - you can ride safely much faster than your friends with Pirelli Angels or other sport-touring rubbers :)

I, too, switched from Anakee IIIs to Pilot Road Trail 4's. I had forgotten about that odd wear pattern on the front. I got a puncture on the PR4 rear tire and plugged it. I am now looking forward to an epic road trip this summer, from NY state to Montana and possibly the west coast. I would have needed a new rear on that trip so I went ahead and ordered a set of Anakee Adventure tires to be mounted prior to that trip. I will keep that front PR4 tire and likely toss the rear that has the plug. I figure on that long trip that rear tire will be loaded heavy and will be subjected to high speeds and very hot weather, so better safe than sorry and run new tires that won't need replacement on that trip, and not take a chance on that plugged rear tire.

MP4's, Versys 650, often loaded with lots of gear, mostly on road. Very similar experience to yours. Awesome on pavement, wet or dry, 1/4" chicken strips. Useless in sand or mud. I kept the rear overpressured by 2 psi which helped a lot on extending wear.

Hey Tim, when a tire squares off like that it's what they call the transition that get effected. The "bump" from uneven ware tends to make the bike feel like it's tipping into a turn more than leaning. It messes up your feel. I still have a set of tires here from my 67 Triumph. They were actually made square like a car tire. Great in a straight line just stop to turn. Going to try the new Michelins on my GS this as well. They make good stuff. Cheers

Get the Michelin Road Pilot 4 GT's for the rear since it's a heavy bike. Your only choice for the front is the Trail due to the size. The GT's should last longer.

Thanks for the review, it's helpful, I just bought a new bike - F750GS - and it came with Anakee 3 tires. Part of my weekend riding is on dirt side roads. I was wondering if the tires could do a decent job, as the tread doesn't look like much.

I refer to the feeling you were describing with Anakees in turns as falling into the turn. The bike tries lean way over and feels like is falling in.

i have been contemplating on which way to go between these two tyres. i presently have Anakee adventure on my bike and as you just said, i also have an issue with them cornering/leaning. same issue with the way they have worn. i think this time i will try the pilot 6 trail.

If you want to try a more off road tyre, the Mitas EO7 Plus is worth a try. You need the “plus” version to fit the rear wheel on a water cooled GS. It’s a 50/50 with excellent wet weather grip. It’s much better both on and off road than the Anakee and wears more evenly (never tried a Pilot). My front lasts about the same as an Anakee but the downside is that the back wears faster. Myself and a few friends who want a more off road focused tyre have switched to this with the upside that it lasts way, way longer than a TKC80.

I have the Avon on the Africa twin at the moment. I have also been debating on new rubber. I believe I'm going with the motoz gps tractionator. I'm kinda 50/50 person but still more road miles until I get better at the off road portion. The avons' have been terrific so far believe it or not. They have performed even in watery mudholes to my surprise. They had a little slide to them but would recover predictably. I have come to the conclusion that a deeper tread is what I'm aiming for though with the ability to ride the slab until I get to the fun off road.

I'm doing now 14000km with the Michelin Road 5 trail on my VFR1200X (Crosstourer) and counting. I think they do better off-road because of the bit more open tread but it's still a 90/10 tyre.

Thanks for the answering the question we all have and nobody answers about the Michelin Pilot 4's man, are they any good off road. Sound like they are capable, not outstanding but someone could take it on mild off roading like you showed, that is plenty for me, and I could follow my brother and nephew on the trails they go on their quads this way. I just installed the pilot road 4's and was not sure if I could do anyting at all off road. Thanks again! (I had Anakees when I bought the bike, but they made an infernal noise in the expressway I had to get rid of them)

Pilot road 4 are good tires for sure if you spend 90% on road and 10% heavily maintained gravel roads. Off road terrible. The industry go to tire for Adventure/Dual Sport bikes are the Continental TKC80.

Thanks Tim, I 100% agree about the PR4s. You said you are going for a more off-road oriented set of tires next. What are you looking into? I have the TKC 70s currently on my 1200GS but a week ago was at the BMW Performance center and rode their GS which had the TKC80s. Those too are really good tire. The only drawback is that they don’t last long but they do really well on the wet and dry pavement and Really really well off road.

Hi Tim, my GS came fitted with the Anakee ( or we call them Panakee's in the UK) as std unfortunately and will be changing as soon as they are worn out probably with Road 5's as they seam to get good reviews. My front is going the same way as you mention, two flats on each edge and another problem we find with the anakee is the road noise. . It surprises me as to how much mileage you get from your tyres and I'm thinking its because you do a lot of trails as I only get about 6500 miles from mine only on tarmac though.

My bike is wearing a Pilot Road 4 in the front, and the road 5 in the back. Im happy with the grip of both in wet and dry conditions. Im a little worried during the summertime about the road 5, they heat up really fast, even during the winter end / spring start (@10 degrees Celsius average), and the impact on the duration, they keep turning up the tire tempetature alarm (got it calibrated for the pilot road 4 composite). So, in conclution, the new model is way more soft than the previous version, lets see how they work overall. P.D: The weather here is very rainy, so i wont change this tires for anything. ;)

Wow, I never got more than 11-12k km out of a set on my 2017 GSA. Whatever brand it was, Metzler, Michelin or Pirelli. Currently I have Pirelli Trail 2 on them and at 8k km they start cupping. I did not like the Annakee's as the are noisy and not cornering well. My wife has them on her GS and now at 16 k km they are completely gone. We ride mostly on pavement as off-road riding in out area is mostly forbidden and we don't have many unpaved roads over here in the Netherlands anyway.

Great video. I had to replace mine right when I got the bike (2nd gen KLR) and I went with the Shinko 804/5s. They're technically about a 60/40 on/off road tire but I have been very impressed with their pavement prowess, especially in the wet. They also seem to be great in the dirt, although there is a small bit of sideways slippage, mostly on the rear, due to the crosswise tread pattern. I think the 60/40 rating was more based on tire life than road worthiness. I'll be wearing these till they wear out and probably replacing them with the 705s but not sure yet. If these last long enough I might just put another pair of them on, for the increased off road capability. Will be interested in what you replace the Pilot Road 4s with.

But I think I stick to my K60, on my 1150 for now. I change every spring, and have never run out of tread so far, and I travel at least 2000km (12400mi) / season. Cheap tires, nice on grave and paved road. Pritty good looking tread, maybe not so important on this issue, but yet ;)

I have been told to change both tires at the same time I take it that you don't follow that advise. I may try that with the next time I need to change tires I could usually get another one to two thousand miles out of the front. I have been using Metzler 880s.

My front tires last twice as long as the rear so I only replace both every other time for the rear. I haven't had any issues from doing this, I have heard that too but I'm not really sure what the concern is. Maybe it affects the wear of the new tire? Doesnt seem to change handling anyways. Not sure but I have heard that too.

I’m wondering if you or anyone has heard of using nitrogen in motorcycle tires? I haven’t myself, but I know a few pilots that use it not only in their planes but also in their cars. I would think that if you ride through a wide range of temperatures nitrogen would be great because it doesn’t expand and contract like air does. Also, it doesn’t seep out of tires as much as air does. Have you ever used it?
