Motorcycle Wheel Truing, TruSpoke, BMW R1250GS

This was a tough task. BMW R1250GS rear wheel had a lateral of 3.7mm. According to BMW, this is a new wheel. So I ordered a replacement from Woody's in Colorado.
Everywhere I read said the rim was too far gone. That BMW wheels are too tough to straighten. Just leave it to the professionals. Well, I'm a curious person and like a challenge. So off we went.
In this video I'm using the TruSpoke tool to set the initial tightening of the spokes. I purchased this tool myself and am not sponsored or have any association with them.
Please note: I AM NOT A PRO! I've never worked on a rim before. There are many mistakes in this video. This is NOT an instructional video.

For a novice, would you recommend the TruSpoke tool as a good starting point? Or do you think that a very accurate torque wrench could get you similar or better results? I have an Aprilia Tuareg with X-Spoke wheels, and I made some mistakes and got the front wheel very out of true. So now I have loosened all spoked and the rim does appear to be fine but I am trying to decide how to proceed if I should buy the TruSpoke tool, or get a more accurate torque wrench as all I have is a CDI 2-8Nm torque wrench. Cheers from Portland, OR. Thanks!

A torque wrench and the TruSpoke tool are completely different tools. The TruSpoke takes a measurement with the spoke and spoke nipple. This gets the hub centered within the rim. The torque wrench is used for ensuring everything is tightened correctly. For a novice, I think the TruSpoke is a great tool. I couldn't have got this far without it.

The methods you are using won’t work as the spoke in some area will have stretched.
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 Месяц назад
I was able to get the lateral and vertical runout to 0.9mm, which is within BMW specs. So the method does work. However, it is an interesting thought; I wonder how much the spokes have stretched. Perhaps in a future video we can test it.

Glad you liked the video. The tool can be purchased here: www.skylartools.com/truspoke-2/. The torque tool was purchased here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JW55LN3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1. I have both the 3nm and 4nm versions.

By setting all spokes to averages should bring wheel into horizontal and vertical tolerance?

Mr. Random, I was a completely fool when I wrote those words. I never meant to be rude. I hope that you accept my apologies. You were right and I was wrong. The majority of the accomplishments that We conquer in life is done empirically. We get the right after so many tries and mistakes until We get to the point. Until We get them right. You are on the right path. Eventually You will get that right. You are almost there. Congratulations, and once, again, I humbly apologize for such bad and foolish comments about that. Best Regards, Mario

Is there an offset on that wheel ?
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 Месяц назад
Offset is typically when the wheel in mounted on the bike. So I think you are referring to the hub and rim centering. From my research, the hub is centered within the rim on these models.

From my experience, it can be a headache on cross spoked rims. I haven't worked on a regular spoked wheel. But the cross spoked seem much more complicated.

Cool video...thank you...I have a 2022 R1250GS...love spoked wheels and have some experience with them...the spoke length on these wheels is about 187mm...front and rear...pulling and pushing spokes...all the same length...since BMW does not provide service manual, I am not able to locate what the torque setting is...I was told by a BMW certified mechanic that it should be 2.5 N/m...but another BMW mechanic from another shop gave me a higher value...do you know what the max torque value is for spokes on these wheels?
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 4 месяца назад
Per the service manual , the first tightening torque is 0.9Nm, The 2nd tightening torque is 4Nm. The grub screw is tightened to 1.9Nm. These numbers are from the 2019 manual but I don't think they would have changed.

Well done. I've attempted truing a wheel before but failed miserably, probably because I lost patience halfway through.

Did you tighten the spokes to BMW specifications in inch pounds? Great video!
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 7 месяцев назад
BMW Specs are in NM. But yes, at about the 33 minute mark, I'm using a "Prestacycle Mini TorqKeys Preset Torque Tool". It's preset to 3nm, so I'm able to ensure that everything is very close to the max BMW spec of 4nm. I also have the 4nm version. When you get to this point of truing a wheel, a tiny adjustment can have a big impact. So using the torque tool along with 1/8 or 1/4 turn increments is the only way to go.

Dude, You even don't know what you are doing. Those measurements are way off of BMW's specifications ! ! !
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 7 месяцев назад
You are almost correct. It's true I don't know what I'm doing. This was an experiment. As stated in the comments, I have never worked on a rim before and this isn't an instructional video. Per the BMW Service Manual (Section 36 31 511) for a 2019 R1250GS, max lateral and vertical runout is 1.7mm. This rim was 3.7mm when I started, and 0.9mm when finished. This video was really about showing what can be completed for a beginner. The very basic steps. And that with patience, you can get there.

I hope that you accept my apologies. I was a completely fool when I said those words. I never meant to be rude. I humbly apologize. You are correct. Very helpful video. Thanks. Would you share how to get the tool to measure the length of the spoke or grub screw? The one that you insert into the nipple
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 10 месяцев назад
The grub screws are removed prior this process, so they are not part of the measurement. When the grub screw is out, the tool will measure from the end of the spoke to the working tip of the T40 bit. The TruSpoke tool comes with a T40 bit that has a hole in the middle. This allows a small needle to pass from the tool through the bit and onto the end of the spoke nipple. Does that help? If not, I can upload a better video of exactly what the TruSpoke tool does.

I looked at the cost of the tool vs sending the rim for repair. Since I like to tinker, the tool made sense. Especially since I had never done this before. This is the only rim I've used the TruSpoke tool on. @@cassin11
