Biggest problem is not the price and the range (which are huge), the biggest problem is the Electric bikes that will be released in the next few years that will be cheaper and with more range and then you will have a 3-4 year old bike that will be obsolete and you will have to sell these for scooter money.

I don't know, they've been talking about revolutionary leaps in battery technology for decades, but the reality has been incremental improvements. I do hope the revolution happens though, because I won't be ready for the shift until electric bikes are actually competitive in terms of bang for buck performance, and are capable of the sort of distances necessary for anything but urban commuting here in Oz (without a company building a route of charging stations for your journey or backup vehicles lugging gensets).

You missed probably the biggest differentiator in the bikes which is the DC charging ability of the Livewire. That’s probably quite a contributor to the additional cost but means you can charge so much faster
@rzu7120

Lack of DC fast charging would be a deal killer for me.
@dylandog1289
@dylandog1289 3 года назад
DC fast charging isn't even in our area yet. We are however surrounded by hundreds of J plug Level 2 chargers...which the livewire doesn't use. If you plug a J into the livewire, it takes 9 hours. So if you don't have DC fast near you, you have no choice but to pass on the livewire. This is a big reason I went with a zero. An hour per charge is great, IF you have the network of chargers in your area. The zero on a J plug takes 2 hours and I didn't have to wait to have chargers built. Livewire does look great though. Wanted to test ride one but our local official Harley dealer won't install the required charger.
@brewbrau3848

The DC fast charging on the Livewire is great but actually the reason why I bought a Zero. There just isn’t any place around me to fast charge it other than HD which is 50 mile away. Zero gives me level 2 which is plentiful. If HD can incorporate level 2 & 3 then I’d be all over it.

Thanks for your video. Regarding the range there is a huge difference between motorway riding and back road riding. You can nearly double the range on back road riding as you are using the regen a lot when slowing down for the corners. When on the motorway barely any regen takes place on both these bikes and they will both suffer with poor range. This is what I have found after owning the SR/F for a year.

I've ridden several Zeros and the Livewire. The Harley is way better, but the Zero gives good value once you factor in the insurance and low maintenance. You can find new Zeros for around 11k. I rarely ever ride more than 70 miles in one day so range is not an issue. I don't hardly ever ride faster than 70 mph and avg 30-35 mph during my urban commutes.

Thank you mate for the video, I agree with what you say about the Livewire. I'm from Australia. and yes I forked out 50 k AUD to buy the H-D Livewire and I absolutely love it. Well the main reason I brought it was because it was one of my goals to help me beat the cancers I've got riddled through my body. Every time I ride the bike, it gives me a smile on my face and has rekindled my love of motorcycling. One of the best features of the bike is the sheer quietness of the bike when you start it up or are in stop start traffic on a major road. It is probably the only bike in the H-D range that you can start up at 4 am in the morning and not wake up your next door neighbors.

The Zero costs £8,000 (!) less than the Livewire. That's $11,250 (!!). And what do you get for this extra dough? A little better fit and finish. Think what you can buy for $11,250. A handmade Schott horsehide jacket, a top of the line Arai helmet, made-to-order leather boots, a motorcycle trailer, and a decent used car. You'd have to be nuts to buy the Livewire.

It just felt good and like it did things right, but I wasn't excited. I'm going to test the Livewire Del Mar when it gets to France this September. @@chrishart8548 The money centre is London. It takes time for money to 'radiate' away from the centre of money. It also takes time, a lot of time. By the time money reaches "oop north" it has attenuated (devalued and been taxed multiple times). The way to reduce waste, pollution, etc is quite simply to eliminate tax as much as possible as then money will 'radiate' and not 'attenuate'. Multiple centres of money supply will spring up. If you want to reduce waste and become more eco friendly, move away from fiat to blockchain. EVs would never survive such a market of free exchange. Now how's that for a tangent!!!

Whether you like it or not, car technology is ahead of bikes- as an economic reality. Electric cars are still premium or compromised. We can expect mass market electric bikes 5-10 years after this happens on cars. The exception is limited range City bikes and scooters, which are far more viable than a big range, full performance PTW. Don't get me wrong, I like petrol. I'm sure I can like electric. But at present, range, performance and infrastructure standards are still being shaped. Of course, the BIG question is green electricy production on a scale big enough to power transport, power industry and heat houses instead of fossil fuels. This is the big one, as far as I can see and needs decade's of planning, which, let's face it, is not built into most political systems. Unless the majority decide they really want it........
