I needed to repair our motorhome's door card and lock because the door jammed open and closed while we were on holiday in Devon. The door lock became loose and the motorhome passenger inner door card was cracked in places. So I repaired the inner door card and added some extra lubrication to the lock mechanism.
Our 1998 Hymer B564 is based on a Fiat Ducato chassis.

This felt like a thriller movie. Deadly springs, fragile parts and small parts that you know you are going to lose in the process. Will he make it? Yesss! 😀 But seriously, keeping the locks lubricated and clean ensures the proper operation. You do not need much dirt to jam a small mechanism. Good job, Ads 👍

Thanks for a great video. I have an '03 B564 that needs the same fiberglassing to my door but have been, until now, completely stumped (or is it too scared) to get the panel off. Now at least I know I can. One suggestion id like to make although I hesitate to make any suggestion to someone more competent than me is that when undoing the screws through the door retaining spring to put a strip of gaffer tape over the bolts, then they won't fly off or get lost. I discovered this when fitting a handbrake extender when there wasn't enough room to get two hands in. Thanks again for all your posts.

Mines a 2008 Hymer Ads and I wouldn’t want to take the plastic door surround off for fear of further breakages. Weirdly as well the only time I’ve ever used my master key was for transferring my barrel on a new water filler cap. Keep up the good work sir.

Great repair Ads. I do have one observation though. That spring you highlight at 8.50 minutes. The round part in the middle of that spring. There is a hole behind that round part of the spring. Should there be a metal shaft sitting in that hole? A metal shaft going through that round bit on that spring, would act as a pivot and also secure the spring in place. The way it looks, when you lock and unlock the door. That spring moves all over the place. I think the centre of that spring should stay in one place on a metal shaft with the 2 ends of the spring being the only parts that move. I could be wrong though.
@HermanHitstheRoad
@HermanHitstheRoad 2 года назад
Thanks for commenting, Andrew Gledhill. It needs to be able to flick back and forth otherwise it would stop the door pull from moving 👍👍

Oh dear , i need to remove the door card on my van . It's a couple of years newer than yours at 2000 , though i suspected it removes in exactly the same way . The card is in quite a state , i suspect due to a previous owner's heavy handedness , but also the plastic has become brittle , and cracked in several places . I notice your's has broken in one place , the same place as mine , around the lock mechanism itself . My warning triangle cover won't stay in place as the screw lock slot has broken , and there are bit's missing in a couple of places . I also want to fit a dead lock , but, that's another story . Actually the card is in such a state , i may try and source a new one , but that will have problems of it's own , so i suspect , so a repair may be the only way to go . The problem with a repair of this hilt , is finish . It's almost certainly gonna end up in different colours . Unlike the spats , i've recently repaired , paint is gonna be a problem . I have managed to source a trim paint from a restoration company , of similar colour , but still yet to test it . The repair itself won't be an issue though . I've not only welded both my front spats , but the bumper as well , and even converted my radio slot to double din , so a new Kenwood multi media centre , can reside there . My door strap is also bent , and that is damaging the card , but i have a question regarding the interior lock pin . On most vehicles , these unscrew , do they not do that on these vehicles ?
@HermanHitstheRoad
@HermanHitstheRoad 2 года назад
Hi Mickey, I thought about fixing the area around the door latch but I don't think there's much room for fibre-glass and the latch. I'm not sure what you mean by the pin unscrewing.
@mickey1299
@mickey1299 2 года назад
@@HermanHitstheRoad It's a fair cop , mate , i dunno what it's called either . The black plunger you show at 2:17 for the interior lock release . They normally unscrew , but i will admit , i tried mine today , and it don't seem to want to play . It could be stiff , but it could also be fixed . It would be the first one i've come across that don't unscrew . Both my other cars do , and ones a 94 Citroen , 6 years older . My door card is gonna be quite a major job , as i said it's in quite a state . I've been having a look at it today , and it looks like it will just about fall out . It's not that securely fixed along the forward end of the door , relying on several screws to hold it in place , though a couple of the screw holes have broken through . I'm gonna plastic weld the thing . Sink some reinforcement in , then fair off with new plastic . Got no chance of getting filler rod the right colour , normally comes in either white or black , and that's if i can identify the plastic type . I'm not sure how long a fibreglass repair would last , i get the feeling it's a stress area , and plastic can be tricky to get a grip on . The dashboard is a polythene mix , and i never figured out what the bumper was , i was forced to use a special general purpose rod . That's the tricky part of plastic welding , you must identify the plastic first . Mixing leads to a weak repair , and eventual failure , the actual repair itself , is a doodle . I just got too much on right now to get on with it , so it's on the to do list , though i do wanna fit the dead lock . I wanna get this van back on the road this year , for a special trip next year . So it may not get done till next autumn .

I have a few jobs on Nessa that aren't to dissimilar. I need to remove the main door surround and re attach the window felt, and I have a few bits of cracked plastic to fibreglass also. One being the Toilet panel as you can see daylight though a large crack in the corner and I have to also repair the floor, It is so brittle with age that I don't want to risk removing it to repair it from the back is. some bit have been lost. so I will just fibreglass the entire floor and then recover it with floor vinyl. I also have the front brakes disc and pads to change as one is pretty nasty, not bad enough to fail the MOT, but enough to effect breaking efficiency slightly. The biggest job will be getting under Nessa and sorting out the rusty chassis and then re wax oiling her again. and whilst I am under there I will replace the rear shocks as the once of there have been shocks for too long, and are badly corroded. All jobs bar the brakes to be done after our Scotland trip next week.

@@HermanHitstheRoad The Beauty of owning an older Motorhome. There is plenty of rusty bits and weaken plastic to deal with. She did pass her MOT first time round a few days ago, as she has failed a good few previous ones, normally down to the bulb carrier on the rear light clusters being pretty much open to the elements. Last years I was in the Garages yard changing the marker light fittings and lashing in the battery. Ordered a new clamp but it needed a bit of massaging to get it to fit. The battery is meant to be a direct replacement for the original one, but it is slightly wider. when we bought Nessa there was nothing holding the battery in other than it being very tight withing the cradle and surrounding area.

@HermanHitstheRoad
@HermanHitstheRoad 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, @maggiereid9625. I've taken the door off so many times that it is easy for me. What do you need a spring for? Do you mean the one that goes around the barrel to return the lock to the same position? We have two locks where the spring has broken and we just manually turn it back to the centre position. It would be nice to have the springs, though

Using screwdrivers to remove an old panel isn't the best , yes we use tools to hand . You can purchase trim removal tools (they are inexpensive or use your other halfs credit card ), they are hard plastic of different shapes , they give a bit, have a larger area to brace against the plastic and the item you are trying to remove it from .
