Dandy piece of vintage radio equipment just like in the days on Emergency! Engine 51, Squad 51 those QC tones over the loudspeaker and radios, and HT-220's
Most any fire dispatcher or radio technician from the 60's-70's and 80's probably would recognize that piece of equipment. What a system! Somewhere there was documentation on what tone groups and individual 2+2 tone codes that could be safely assigned and used. Such as Groups CG & JL (and one or two others) and the individual two-plus two tone codes. For example code C&D together was not to be assigned. I would love to know where a copy of that documentation can be found. There was also an accompanying selector panel for the T1251, same size and design where 32 individual buttons could be wire strapped inside to provide single button activation of a 2+2 or Group tones. It took a lot of wiring and soldering to wire the entire box. Almost looked like spaghetti from the bottom with the cover off.
As a further tidbit . . . From the ‘Adventures of Superman’ TV show of the 1950’s, Season 6 Episode 2 titled “The Magic Secret” A clip from that show posted on RU-vid titled ‘Yep That Happened’ by Free Candy, link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8c4dTKevOLE.html At 2:58 into the clip, the scene in the bunker where the bad guys are, among the various technical/weapon control equipment, etc. is a vintage Motorola T1251 "Quik-Call" Tone Encoder as a prop. It's the box near the window. Anyone from FD dispatch or Comm Tech from that era would recognize it with the VU meter in the center and two rows of 12 black buttons.
Awesome piece of old radio tech. Nice find, and I imagine it took some work to restore as well. Not that I imagine you will ever want to part with it, but If this should ever become for sale I would love to know about it. Cheers
