@@kirbykipling9515 right, it most certainly can be insignificant at times. And then on the other side of the coin, you have the cursed and downright revolting homeliness of Diane Ernestine's appearance, I don't think too many people were shocked when they discovered that Diane Ernestine had resorted to backstabbing her childhood friends and pawning her slit for hits in Motown's Master bedroom suite. Her lack of physical beauty (combined with her lack of inner beauty) was likely the most devastating factor which contributed to her miserable behavior towards people. But with the right makeup and lighting, sometimes Miss Ross looked quite attractive. In those instances, I doubt that any 4-legged wildebeest wouldn't be PROUD to look like just her. And I can't get over the striking resemblance in the 👀 eye sizes and similarly long eyelashes. They say everybody's got a twin walking around somewhere. Although Miss Ross's twins tend to ROAM around somewhere.
Grew up on Motown! There will never be a music like it. It’s amazing how music bridges so many divides and brings us ALL together for the love of the music and talent!
The way Cindy and Mary jump into harmony. The Supremes hosted the best background vocalist ever when they were allowed to shine. Just rich simple harmony.
Mary Wilson was so intelligent to wear that bright, red gown. And you can hear her through all the noise. She knew how to be a real star without diminishing anyone else.RIP, Mary Wilson.
Actually the show told everyone wear silver, white or black. For the theme of the 25th anniversary of Motown. And Mary was just trying to be difficult! In fact after this show, she was banned from all Motown productions because of her shenanigans.
@@vicgalindo1 It was NOT the show. DIANE told Mary and Cindy to wear black or white. As you can see, Diane decided to wear silver to stand out. Mary showed HER, didn't she!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cindy, of course, was her old obedient self and wore white!
Even though there was tension between the three ladies. Ms. Ross's new release got me to check out mary Wilson and Florence Ballard's solo work. After she talked about the two albums. I was not disappointed. These Motown ladies really paved the way for my geenration.
It's very hard to watch this even more so now, because a lot of the legends on that stage are gone now. When it first aired and I saw this, I would almost always cry. Now it's even more emotional now.
Mary Wilson stepped out there looking gorgeous and sounding great!, she refused to be way in the background another night and literally stole the show...............listen to the crowd cheer when she saunters on to the stage looking red hot!!!
@@mic6434 I guess your t.v. dont get all the channels, or your internet is down. Mary Wilson is far from being in the background she is way out in front all over the t.v. and internet, not to mention with a brand new book in Barnes and Nobles.....the background is now reserved for Ms Ross
@@TahariBlue Honey it's not her TV or internet that's keeping her in the dark, it's faulty wiring in the brain. Apparently it greatly affects the perception and understanding regions in certain parts of the brain
@Tim Harris Mary looked and sounded spectacular that night. She was the last artist to come on stage that night and the last one to end up with Berry Gordy......center stage!
Michael was to shy to sing Someday We’ll Be Together. He didn’t really know too many ppl on the stage that well other than Smokey, Diana, Marvin, and Berry
@@NOV123 not accurate. Michael was shy off stage he has said many times he's never shy on stage singing. He knew almost everyone there. He knew Stevie very well and The Temptations. He paid for David Ruffin's funeral. He also knew Richard Pryor and Billy Dee. He was only gone from Motown for 3 years at that
Black people are amazing!!!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Music will always be our truth! It starts with Motown. Goosebumps all over my body from watching this.... our history is incredible❤
I'm 65 and was raised in a home full of great music being played everyday..Everything from great vocalists, big bands, country, R&B, Pop, theatre and more..But in my opinion the greatest and most prolific contributions to the great American Songbook will be that of Black Americans..Whether it came from the sheer honesty and struggles most of the rest of us will never know or from what I believe is just an innate gift sent from God himself it represents what is the very best of America and has been a vehicle for so many to be able to achieve the greatness within and help us overcome are past transgressions and discriminations..Peace to you..🎈
@@Jhmmmy yes they were performing or rehearsing on a stage somewhere (tensions between the girls were probably at it's peak during this time) and during the performance, one of Florence's earrings fell off and hit the floor and Diane accidentally stepped on it and broke it. As soon as they got backstage, Florence lit into Diane, physically attacking her with such ferocity that it took more than one person to pry the plus-size Florence aloose from whatever part of Diane's little scrawny anatomy she had latched herself onto.
@@Jhmmmy tensions were high at this time and Florence was rightfully furious at how they were being shoved into the background at every turn in order to make miss Ross stand out. When you have this so called"star quality" that the Motown myth machine has attributed to Ms Ross in her ability to make the supremes a success due to her lack of soul or gospel in her voice, you don't have to push others into the background for a star to do it's shining. Every step that Motown took in trying to make Florence and Mary almost invisible was simply done so that this person with "star quality"could stand out. As the other two got as much attention from the fans as the lead singer. So what is the reason to push these girls so far into the background? So that they wouldn't take away too much attention from a so called"Star-quality" performer, that's why. People liked to say that the other two couldn't sing 🤣 But we all know how beautifully the 3 harmonized together because we heard it with our own ears. So then tell me what was the purpose of muting their mics as Motown occasionally did? I'll tell you why?! So that this person with so called star quality could stand out above and beyond the rest. She was FORCED to stand out. In interviews she spoke alone for the entire group as if Mary and Florence were not apart of the group. On stage is where it was so easy to see how despicably and desperately Motown had become in order to make Diane Ross stand out. And oh boy, when the name change came, it must have felt like highway robbery to the other two. Cuz they knew that it was just another stunt to shove miss Ross down our throats in order to make her stand out. Star quality? Ha! There's star quality and then there's star inequality. When you have to commit such shameful acts to make someone stand out above the rest, that's more star inequality than anything else. And someone at Motown (ESPECIALLY miss Ross) obviously knew that she had it: star-inequality
Well, I’ll be the one to just go on ahead and say it. The Marvelettes (Katherine Anderson and Wanda Young) SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE!!! RIP Gladys Horton (Early Lead Singer of The Marvelettes). Rosalind Ashford and Betty Kelly (The Vandellas) should have been there too!!
😱😱😱they weren't?? It's been so many years I don't remember..wow..it's never really a reunion without "all" of the people that help build it!!! Like the Funk Brothers and The Andantes too...unsung heroes 😌
@@mjc5509 with regard to the Supremes, the Andantes contributed along with Mary and Flo on "Stop in the Name of Love" and "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone." The Andantes also sang on "Love Child" and "I'm Living in Shame" without Mary and Cindy. So don't go sayin' that they were on most of the Supremes songs, at least the HIT songs by the Supremes because that's bull. Yes, the Andantes were Motown's studio backup session singers that sang on hundreds of Motown recordings by all of its stable of artists, except for the Temptations, the Andantes only sang on one of their earlier recordings, I think it was "All I Need" but David Ruffin put a stop to that because he said that the Tempts could not replicate female voices when they took the songs out on the road and toured.
I was 7 years old at the time and I remember it like it was yesterday I begged to stay up late to watch because of michael jackson I'm glad I was old enough to remember this it was magical
M25 was like a Holiday for Black people. To this date, it's the best musical show I've ever seen. So much talent on one stage. The 60th Anniversary special pales in comparison.
The Suprenes performing a hits medley would have brought the house down. It's a shame they couldn't set their differences aside for the show as it would have been phenomenal!
Was always so thankful they did this! All these greats would never share the stage again! And there was alot of negotiation to get them there this time!
Ja tall2- Diana Ross worked hard for her success today But you fail to understand the way she got to the top, She slept with the Boss, and she was ruthless not just to the Supremes, but everyone else at Motown And that is what many people will remember about Ms Ross, Ms Wilson was never jealous of Ross, Ms Wilson worked all her life right to the end, and was well Respected in the entertainment business
I don't understand why they gave the Supremes the least amount of time on stage. Every other group, at least performed one song or more on stage. There is no mention of Florence Ballard either. This was the only Supremes Reunion we ever got, and it was only for a few seconds. They performed a song that Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong didn't have their vocals on. It was a good show, but the Supremes got the smallest amount of time on stage. Rest in peace to you, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson!❤
Don't you know... the footage was doctored. Diana allegedly punched Mary Wilson on stage. That's why Smokey comes out randomly. He was sent to diffuse the situation.
It wouldn’t take much to upstage Diana’s vocals. Diana is an icon but she’s also a terrible person. She did a lot of awful things to climb to the top but she will always be, one of the all time greatest entertainers.
A WONDERFUL. ENSEMBLE OF. *** THE WORLD'S GREATEST SUPERSTARS ****. MY FAVORITE SUPERSTARS. I LOVE *** MOTOWN***. CONGRATULATIONS. TO. *** BERRY GORDY*** THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THE GREAT WONDERFUL MUSIC !!!! ❤❤❤
I saw this when it aired and to this day I think of this finale 4:18 with the various artists coming on to the stage and Diana greeting them, the epitome of femininity, elegance and beauty. The way she kisses, hugs and the occasional leg lift as she embraces someoneone. She kisses Richard. The way she calls out Michael's name, then embraces Marvin. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how she speaks to Berry, then when he arrives on stage the full on embrace from some. Not a stupid fist bump or a hand clap and shoulder touch. I guess they have a place, but I don't know where. That night if there were any animosity among any of them, you couldn't tell; and if there were, I'm convinced it was squashed on that stage that night. I often think of this finale and occasionally watch it. I like seeing Diana. We don't have too many examples of women femininity. To me, Loretta Devine also embodies this type of femininity. Anyway, thanks for posting it. My heart is always overwhelmed and I tear up. It's such a beautiful moment at a once beautiful time, with some amazingly and wonderfully talented people. Thank you.
Diana look s so fabulous and beautifully sharp in her outfit.. Mary -- gorgeous as ever and Cindy--- she came out chubby as if the Universe was saying -- Flo -- she really was not that bad..... YES!! I wish Flo was there.. BGORDY ---- This could have been a different ending. Maybe in the next time?
I really can't watch this completely without sad eyes. I see all of these folks who are not with us any longer (e.i.: Marvin Gaye,Mary Wells,Dick Clark, Bobby Rogers,Pete Moore (both of the Miracles), Melvin Franklin, Richard Street (both of the Temptations),Levi Stubbs, Lawrence Payton,Obie Benson (3 of the 4 Tops),Nick Ashford (of Ashford And Simpson), Mary Wilson(of the Supremes)and last but definitely not least, MICHAEL!!! He actually STOLE the show introducing the globe to the MOONWALK!!! Not to mention some of the producers, arrangers, and directors and managers, but everyone will have their number called. R.I.P. to these fallen heroes!!!!!! 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Oh dear .... she looked desperate and pathetic. It was sad. Like a little girl trying to compete with a Diva. The world laughed at Mary...they really did. The cheers were for they appeared together -NOT BECUSE MARY WALKED OUT.
@April_Spring2015Yes it's true that Mary couldn't compete with Diana Ross in their beginning days as the Supremes: For some inexplicable reason, Mary could NEVER quite gap her legs open as wide as miss Ross was able to. Mary's performances lacked the agility and flexibility to compete with Ross. Mary could never outshine Diane Ernestine when it came to doing the twist, the bends, the splits, the headstand, the pony or the jerk in the Motown Master Bedroom Suite. Mary just wasn't able to compete with Diane Ernestine. But outside of a contortionist in a hor-house, who could? 🤔
In my humble opinion I think Berry Gordy should compensate all the living and deceased members’ families of the Detroit ‘funk brothers’ to the tune of $1 million each for their massive role in creating the Motown hits we all know and love.
As well as mary (rip) sang, she could never have done justice to this iconic song. That’s why the orchestra switched to only the chorus of this song. The back vocals were awesome when mary and cindy came on stage. Neither of the ladies were on the original release of the song. I’m glad they did appear. They were truly underrated. Diana is still the diva.
Diana really kissed Berry Gordy on the lips @7:43 while Michael was right there. 😬 Michael would've fallen in love with me if I was around during this time! lol
Mary Wilson is forever favorite Supreme. Diana pushed Mary during this performance and they cut it from the film. That's why Smokey originally came on stage.
Hi , Mary gave an interview couple yrs ago and she cleared the situation. She accepted she basked in the pressure of others. She said that it was blown out of proportion a misunderstanding. That she wasn't to introduce Berry. it was Diana that she called out Berry and Diana went out touched her and said Mary it's been take care of . From the distance looked like Diana shoved her. That's when it all started.
@@carloscolon1916 not quite so. It was obvious that Mary still loved Diane and felt kinda bad about putting her on blast and wanted to try to heal the rift before they left this earth. Mary wanted peace between them and it's more than obvious she was simply playing it down. I once heard Mary say " I believe Diane accidentally grabbed my mic so roughly because she simply got caught up in the nervous excitement of the moment". 🤣 It was obvious that the publishing of that book had forced Diane to read and think about all the nasty stuff she did to hurt Mary. And that in itself helped to soothe Mary's pent up anger at the witch. Mary never said she made anything up that she wrote in that book. But it was sometimes obvious that she had lost all (or most) of her anger at Diane Ross in some interviews and couldn't bring herself to discuss some of the things she revealed in that book. But she never gave the impression that she made anything up.
Phenomenal! Specials didn't have the cast return for the finale before this. Very emotional, and the first full TV special devoted to a Black businessman for a body of work, I think!

the amount of hall of fame talent on that stage was dizzying. Remembered when this first aired i just turned 21. have been able to come up with anything close to this since
@@punkanellylovejoy702 Oh yeah Diana was so "insecure" that her career continued and at age 78 today she is still doing SOLD OUT concert arenas while Mary spent the rest of her life appearing on talk shows slandering Diana. You know, being negative. Because being negative gets you so far in life. You should know based on your comments here. lol.
@@samuelmurillo2244 um excuse me dearest Samuela, but have you forgotten that the Wicked Witch of Motown hasn't had a major hit in nearly 40 years sweetie?
We have a great histroy we just need to revisit from time to time to remind ourselves just how great of people we are look at it on display its a great site to see
Your comment is convoluted. Michael NEVER wanted Diana in a sexual manner . He just wanted to embody Diana with his physical demeanor. Unfortunately, Michael was a very delusional individual.
I remember when this first aired, Circa 1983. The grand final of The Supremes singing "Someday We'll Be Together, was priceless, as well as all those other Motown greats on stage for the grand finale! I'm only we didn't get to see people such as Barrett Strong( If he was still living at that time)The Contours, The Marvelettes, the Isley Brothers, etc. Sadly, one of the people whom helped Berry Gordy to found Motown Records, Jackie Wilson was still in a coma! And also, on a sadder note, I remember both Marvin Gaye & Jackie Wilson passed away in the same month! Also, I wonder if Martha & the Vandellas were on this Tribute Show? Nevertheless, a great show with fantastic performances, great memories, and a grand finale! I was born in 1957, and I grew up in East Harlem in The Projects, so I pretty much remember this music going back to 1963, Motown, and the "British Invasion", spear headed by The Beatles in 1964, as well as the other British Rock & Roll Groups!
Mary Wilson was a knock-out in that red sequins dress. Yes everyone was informed to wear, black, white, and grey. Marvin Gaye and El Debarge had on red. But Ms. Wilson was the only one punish by wearing red. She was not allowed to perform at other Motown events. Mary Wilson always had to fight to get the recognition she deserved. RIP MS. MARY WILSON I Love all of the Supremes and Motown acts
I just watched the DVD version of this, and was very disappointed to see that the shots of Berry in the audience have been removed. When Diana sings the first line of "someday, we'll be together," she was singing it to him. And they exchanged the little fist-bump gesture. That was the most emotional part of the show, and now after 25 years of waiting for the DVD, it's been erased.
Well according to inside sources at Motown the fist part had to be removed because people became offended after being reminded that Berry and Diane were involved in fisting in the bedroom to satisfy Diane's insatiable greed. At Motown 25, she was secretly referring to their sex acts when she held her fist up to him.
I watched this live. I was extremely disappointed that the Supremes didn’t have at least one song altogether before everyone else started coming out onstage. It was what everyone was waiting for and it felt we were robbed. Very anticlimactic.
